Mulakkal Surya Kumar

Mulakkal Surya Kumar, born in 8 May 1945, is an influential novelist and children’s story writer in Malayalam literature. His transgression to fame occurred when his novel ,” Udukku” received ‘Maman-Mappila Novel’ award, bestowed by Malayala Manorama in 1981. He has received several awards including the “ International year of the child” for his novel ‘Peelikkavadi’ in 1980; “ Best Children’s Writter” award given to him by ‘ Indian Council of Child Educational ‘ which is a prestigious National Award in 1990; “ Junior Fellowship for Literary Research “ awarded by ‘ Department of Culture ‘ among others. As of 2017, he has published about a hundred books. Apart from this, he is also a member of “ Kerala State Committee “ for ‘ the advancement of arts and literature ‘. He is also the editor for “ Thaliru”, a children’s magazine in which one can find stories and poetry written by kids from all over Kerala . M.S Kumar born on 8 May 1945 in Nhangrattiri, Palakkad District , Kerala and was raised in the same place . He is eldest of the four children, born to Mr. Shangunni Ezhuthachan and Mrs. Janakiamma. He finished his elementary education in AUP School Nhanghattiri and did his higher secondary in Government High School, Chathanur. He completed his degree in TTC at SNBTS , Cheruthuruthy. Having a passion towards writing as he recalls from the age of 14 , Mr.Kumar only went further in tuning his talents and making a career out of it. Career

Starting out as a teacher in AUP School in 1967, his alma matter , handling classes till 7th grade. He taught for about 34 years before retiring to being a full time author. His first published work was “ Middukkan Babu”, a children’s novel published in ‘ Deshabimani Weekly ‘ a popular Malayalam magazine in the year 1971. Apart from literature, he enjoys other traditional cultural art forms of Kerala and dramatics. His most sought out hobby , could be , helping to or writing drama scriptures and directing them. One of the most favorite being “ Mangattachanum KunyainMusaliarum”, which is a historical drama which traces the Portuguese invasion in Kerala and the struggles of the common people who try to adapt or fight this imperialist rule. He has also composed , song lyrics for several dramas and movies. “ Manjupeethambara” for the film ‘Krishna-Thulasi’, “ Therithupayunnu” for the drama “Mangattachanum KunyainMusaliarum” amongst the more famous ones. He currently holds several posts like , being a member of “Directorboard”, “ Kerala State Institute of Children’s Literature - Trivandrum “, (editor to) “ Thaliru- Children’s magazine “ and (editor to) “ Thathama - Children’s magazine “. He now frequently writes for several magazines including Mathrubhumi, Malayala Manorama, Deshabimani,etc and other daily newspapers. Personal Life

M.S Kumar wed Miss P.R Kamalakshipriya on 17 May , 1975 and moved to their own house ‘Sarga’ at Nhanghatirri.They have two children named M.S Deepa and M.S Dilip who now raise their own kids .,viz Aishwariaa Unni and Rahul.D.Suryakumar respectively. List of books
