Nurhaci (Manchu: ; simplified Chinese: 努尔哈赤; traditional Chinese: 努爾哈赤; pinyin: Nǔ'ěrhāchì; alternatively Nurhachi; 1559–30 Sept. 1626) was an important Jurchen chieftain who rose to prominence in the late sixteenth century in what is today Northeastern China. After unifying Jurchen tribes under his leadership, in 1616 he declared himself khan of the Later Jin dynasty and declared war on the Ming dynasty two years later by seizing the Ming garrison of Fushun in the Ming province of Liaodong. After many successful battles against Ming forces, he was defeated in 1626 at the Battle of Ningyuan and died in September of the same year.
