Melanie “Mel” Moon is a fictional character from the soap opera Mancetter, played by Lara Hammond. Mel was introduced by executive producer John Smith and made her first appearance in the episode “5 November 1998”. Hammond decided to leave the soap in series 2002, and made her departure in the episode “22 July 2002”. Hammond won multiple awards for her portrayal as Mel.
During her tenure in the soap, Mel was featured in high-profile storylines, such as a rocky marriage to alcoholic Harry McGuire (Jack Bates); an affair with Robbie Clarkson (Adam Wright), and a close relationship with her brother Dennis Moon (Jake Fisher).
Mel made a surprise return to the show in the episode “22 July 2017” when her son Barney is hospitalised after a stabbing, the character departed once again in the episode “2 August 2017”.
During the series 2019 premiere, it was announced that Hammond would once again be returning to the show on a permanent basis. Storylines in this stint included reuniting on-screen with her brother Dennis and son Barney, becoming a grandmother to Barney’s daughter Sophie and coping with the death of Dennis.
Hammond’s third departure from the show was announced during the series 2020 premiere, and Mel departed on-screen with her son Barney in the episode “27 February 2020”.
