From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nonsense mRNA is a messenger RNA bearing one or more mutations that result in a premature stop codon and yield polypeptides with an amino acid sequence shorter than the wild-type or naturally occurring polypeptide.

Nonsense mRNA molecules are created when template DNA strands or the mRNA strands themselves undergo a nonsense mutation in which a protein coding sequence is mutated and a truncated amino acid sequence is coded for.

Nonsense mRNA transcripts are removed by nonsense-mediated mRNA decay.[1]
