The Helmsman Series is a 2D animated web series created by ZumoZumo. It was animated in Alight Motion and FlipaClip.
Its highest viewed episode has over 530 thousand views as of August 2024.
Overview
[edit]Tando Avalene (nicknamed as The Helmsman throughout the series), a white stick figure, gets involved in an accident where he is infected with the sub-dead disease. The sun burns his skin, and he is forced to stay in the shadows and live his days in the ocean. Tando seeks his Cure as his main goal.
Plot
[edit]The Helmsman finds Coral defenseless against 2 sub-deads after diving into the water to cure his wounds. He takes her in, where it figures out that she is able to regenerate.
A few days later, the two set sail to Coral's supposed home, the LOM (later revealed to stand for 'Lab of Mutagenics'). The lab denies them access, causing them to sneak in through a window. The shocked news is revealed as LOM has been exploiting the disease and the Cure for profit. Infuriated, the Helmsman breaks into the facility, Coral following suit. The two escape with another sub-dead.
After the sub-dead they freed leaves, the two return to the Helmsman's home. The Helmsman attempts to do research on the LOM. Later, Vito Briar, a scientist at the LOM, visits the Helmsman, trying to persuade him to give back Coral to 'return her to her mother'. Failing, Vito attempts one last time, giving Tando the location to the facility.
Helmsman and Coral begin to swim to the facility, when suddenly, they are ambushed by Spottie. However, he is quickly taken care of, being revealed to have been attacking to get Coral's food, much to her dismay.
The three get to the lab. The Helmsman begins to go feral as he recognises one of the people that caused him to become a sub-dead. Calming down after remembering a memory of his wife helping him calm down, he hands Esther (Coral's surrogate mother) Coral's toy, much to Esther's recognition.[note 1]
Format
[edit]Variating from the typical formats for episodes in modern webtoons, The Helmsman Series uses a form of internet memes called 'animation memes' to help explain its story. Episodes 4, 5 and 7 are an exception, as they use the normal episode format there (except for Episode 5, with is a animated music video).
