Conostylis bealiana is a rhizomatous, tufted perennial plant species in the family Haemodoraceae, endemic to the south-west of Western Australia.[3] In September and October it produces yellow flowers in the species' native range.[3]

Description

[edit]

Leaves flat, 70-230 mm long, 1-1.5 mm wide; bristles or hairs on the leaf margin present, 0.5-1.7 mm long, with at least some small side branches at the base, flexuose and soft, lying parallel with the margin or angled towards the leaf apex; hairs on the surface of the leaf present. Scape absent. Inflorescence subtended by a bract 8-14 mm long, with several flowers; floral bracts 5.5-6.5 mm long; pedicels present, 7.5-13 mm long; flowers 29-41 mm long. Perianth hairy, radially symmetrical, uniformly coloured, yellow, with six more or less equal tepals, the inner segments 5-8.5 mm long. Stamens six, in one level; filaments 3-3.3 mm long; anther 3-3.7 mm long, without an appendage. Style 30-40 mm long. Flowers in July, August or September. Occurs in the Coolgardie, Avon Wheatbelt, Mallee and Esperance IBRA bioregion(s), of the South-west Botanical Province.[3]

Leaves 10–15 cm long, 1.5–2 mm wide, green, glabrous except fine appressed marginal hairs. Pedicels 5–17 mm long. Perianth straight, 25–45 mm long, deep yellow to orange-red; lobes 4.5–7.5 mm long. Anthers 2.3–3.5 mm long. Style 25–43 mm long. n = 8, J.W.Green, Proc. Linn. Soc. New South Wales 85: 338 (1961); S.D.Hopper 339 (PERTH).

Endemic in W.A. from the Fitzgerald River Natl Park to Israelite Bay with outliers inland near Merredin and Yellowdine. Grows in sandy loam and gravel in mallee heath. Flowers July–Sept.

W.A.: 18.1 km E of Bodallin P.O. on Great Eastern Hwy, S.D.Hopper 3117 (PERTH); 3 km N of Gibson Soak, R.D.Royce 3562 (PERTH); c. 21 km E of Young River Stn, J.W.Green 1240 (PERTH); c. 35 km E of Merredin, A.S.George 9409 (CANB, K, MEL, PERTH); c. 10 km ESE of Howick Hill, N.N.Donner 2639 (AD, PERTH).

Distinguished by the solitary large deeply-coloured tubular flowers and green leaves. Together with Conostylis albescens , this species links Blancoa to other Conostylis . Possibly bird pollinated. No major morphological variants or hybrids known.[4]

Distribution

[edit]

It occurs in the IBRA bioregions of the Geraldton Sandplains and the Swan Coastal Plain in the South-west Botanical Province.[3]

Taxonomy

[edit]

It was first described in 1987 by Ferdinand von Mueller as Conostylis bealiana, from a specimen found close to the promontory of Cape Arid.[1][2]
