Jhelisa Anderson (born 3 October 1963) is an American vocalist, and producer. Jhelisa started her career in Soul Family Sensation. Since her debut in 1994 she has become an accomplished solo artist singing, writing & producing under her first name, Jhelisa. She made three albums and a string of singles and EP's. Her best known track was "Friendly Pressure", a tune that was remixed and re-released many times. She's also been a guest singer for Björk (backing vocals on the "Debut" album), Paul Weller, The Shamen, Block 16, and A.P.E.. Also making guest appearances with jazz boho's like Courtney Pine and Bob Belden. Her sister is Pamela (PY) Anderson, who sang with D*Note and Incognito, her cousin is Carleen Anderson, and her aunt and step-uncle are Vicki Anderson & Bobby Byrd. [2]

Biography[edit]

Born in Mississippi and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Jhelisa started to sing in church at the age of five years old with her family's singing group, "The Little David Family" lead by her father "Little David", a radio DJ/Musician, and her mother Yvonne, a singer and community activist, and sister Pamela, a prodigious singer. Jhelisa says, "music was a family thing" growing up. My grandfather, uncles, cousins, and aunt played music. Expanding from the church and moving into the forbidden secular world, Jhelisa started playing in local bands at age 15, and after high school Jhelisa left Louisville for Los Angeles, where she hoped to become a television broadcaster, but attending college was short lived as the opportunities to make music opened up.

Jhelisa began her recording career at 19 years old on Motown Records with New Wave Soul Band "PAL" in Los Angeles. She then moved to the UK in 1991 and recorded with British indie band "Soul Family Sensation", releasing the album "New Wave" on the groundbreaking "One Little Indian Records" with label mates Björk and The Shamen. Jhelisa also recorded two top ten hit singles with The Shamen "LSI (Love Sex Intelligence)" and "Phorever People", earning her a platinum album. She also contributed vocals for Björk's single release "There's More To Life Than This" on the "Debut (Björk album)" CD.

In 1994, Jhelisa recorded with London-based jazz hip hop label, Dorado Records, who released her first solo album, the critically acclaimed "Galactica Rush" with production partner Lee Hamblin, (which includes her best known song "Friendly Pressure"). The "Galactica Moods" Acoustic Sessions and Remixes CD, Mini Album was released in 1996, followed by "Language Electric", her second album released in 1997 to wide critical acclaim.

Jhelisa was also featured in the Italian film production of "The Protagonist" starring british actress Tilda Swinton.

In the course of her career Jhelisa has recorded with artists such as Courtney Pine, Bryan Ferry, Massive Attack and Chaka Khan, as well as starting her own label and producing the "Starfishing Project" on Avex Records in Japan, The Nowdays, 8th Noise, and Sunday In Algiers, a Nina Simone Tribute, recorded in New Orleans in 2005, followed by the 2006 release of "A Primitive Guide To Being There" on Infracom Records.

Jhelisa has performed her songs in the UK/Europe, Japan, Kenya, Istanbul, and has also supported Herbie Hancock, James Brown, Sting, Nitin Sawhney, and most recently the legendary Mavis Staples on a UK Tour in April 2008. Currently, Jhelisa is featured on two songs on the new "One Giant Leap" CD/DVD released on 19 Records. This project also features Santana, Michael Stipe, Zap Mama and Baaba Maal and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. [3]
