Martial Law

Listen up: The designation of "66.112.107.8" is terminated. The designation is Martial Law.

Hi there!

I just saw that you had posted some comments on my userpage. I thank you for the comments, but I would like to tell you that messages to other users should go on their talk-pages. You can find mine at User talk:Gkhan, in general if you are on any users page, the "discussion"-tab at the top of their page will take you there. When you post there, the next time they go to wikipedia there will be a nice little box saying "You have new messages" (you sould get one now I assume) As for the vandalisms, the real ones who have vandalised my userpage was blocked temporarily, and the other times (the ones you pointed out) it was wikipedia buddies of mine who played a little joke :D All in good fun :D

Anyway, no, I am not an administrator, but I am a very experianced user, so if you ever need any help, don't be afraid to contact me. Even if it is administratorial, I can get an admin to do it (I know a few of them). You could also just pick someone from the list of them and contact them. If it's very urgent (like a user is harrasing you and constantly vandalising your user or talk-page) you can post something at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. However, this should be used very sparingly and only in the worst of cases. It's the wikipedia version of 911 sortof :P Usually, give me a call, and I'll see what I can do?

Now, what was your question? I'm sure I can answer it :D

Viruses

The computer virus article does have a lot of information that you'll find interesting. There is no way that a software virus can damage your hardware; the closest theoretical approach I've heard is if a virus were to try to flicker your monitor on and off at high speed. Some monitors might theoretically be damaged. But I think this attack is theoretical and hasn't been proved. Certainly there's no way the software can damage your motherboard - the usual worst case is that you have to wipe the hard disk and start over reinstalling everything. Tempshill 05:10, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

  • re: Tempshill... You know, computer viruses have existed that can cause problems with hardware, even if hardware is generally harder to attack. If hardware cannot be effected, then what was the BIOS-erasing Chernobyl virus all about? Attacking the hardware, wiping, destroying, or locking the hard drive are things that are often possible, but not current fads -- it's a bit more than just some far out theory, because there have been some critters to do it; I sure wish it were just theory -- but arguably, a virus/spyware piece (along the lines of current fads) that can take control of a systems and log personal information can be worse for the user than system destruction anyway; after all, when it comes down to it, a computer can be replaced at a finite, quantifiable cost - damage to person caused by leak of information/identity theft, hassle, etc, can be harder expenses to deal with. 00:32, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
Well, the truth is, software can damage hardware, the reason being that hardware can have potentially fatal design flaws. A video card, for instance, might have some states that cause problems (e.g. refresh rate too high or some unaccounted-for combination of mode settings). Plus, some devices (fortunately few these days) may rely on the OS to handle things in a sane way. A good, well-designed OS can protect against these kinds of things, but that doesn't mean they aren't there (and of course it can't ultimately protect a user who bypasses such protections). Ddawson 19:34, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

I fixed your external links, they now lead to the correct webpage. You made an error in formatting, doing external links is not quite the same as internal links.

  • To make an internal links, put two ['s around the object you are linking too, and also you can have a | in the middle to specify what the text on the link shall be (as opposed to the destination of the links). Examples:
  • For external links, you do the same but with only 1 [ instead of two. Then you make a space after the URL and write the text on the link

Get it? As for your old IP, that cannot be terminated, I'm sorry. There is no way on wikipedia to terminate accounts, especially not IPs. But don't worry, no one will accuse you of sockpuppetry if there is vandalism from that account, you will be known as your username, AND NOTHING ELSE. :D Alright, anything else you were wondering? Give me a holler gkhan 11:56, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

When you make a link, you have to specify two things. One, where the link lead, and two, what text there should be on the link. You make that distinction with a "|" (i think it's called a pipe) in the link text. So when you write the authour of Hamlet the link will lead to the article on Shakespeare, but the text on the link will be "the authour of Hamlet". Observe: the authour of Hamlet. If you omit the pipe, the text on the link will be the article title. Ie. Shakespeare => Shakespeare. For external links, you use a space for the same functionality. Sorry if that wasn't clear :D gkhan 22:28, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
Where did you see that? My userpage? I can't find it. gkhan 22:45, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
Ohh, that :P No, that wasn't a joke, i had complained on a few of that users action, and he took offence (and I totally understand him, he was new pages-patrolling which can be a pain in the ass sometimes, and the only recognition you get is when you mess up). Swearing is allowed on wikipedia, it's not encouraged, but if used once in a while, it's no big deal. I didn't take offence anyway :P Anyway, it's 1 AM here where I live (Sweden), so I'm gonna go to bed, but if you have any more questions, put them on my talk page, and I'll respond in the morning. Cheers!! gkhan 22:56, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

Welcome

Welcome!

Hello, Martial Law/archive 1, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place helpme on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Again, welcome!  --Nlu 07:30, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

First Sergeants in the USAF

In the US Army there is only one rank that is First Sergeant (1SG). In the USAF "First Sergeant" is not considered a rank, so much as a job. So, a Master Sergeant, Senior Master Sergeant or A Chief Master Sergeant all could be a "First Sergeant" but, you wouldn't have more than one First Sergeant in the same unit. Does that make sense Muj0 22:54, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

suggestion

when you edit a page if you are making a minor edit click the box --Adam1213☺ Talk+|WWW 09:12, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

Another suggestion: I see you make a lot of edits in quick succession. That's fine, but you don't necessarily need to submit all of them. That's what the 'Show preview' button is for; just use it and you can see the result of your edit without cluttering the edit history. Oh, and please try to fill in the edit summary as much as possible. Ddawson 09:40, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

Creating a category

It looks like you tried to add the category Category:Wikipedians who have had Encounters with and/or Interested in the Paranormal by adding a link in Category:Wikipedians by fields of interest. However, this does not create anything except a dangling link. Whereas regular pages (articles, user pages, etc.) get links to other pages by having their source edited directly, there is a reverse mechanism for category membership. You put a link to a category on the page you want to categorize; e.g. would put the page on which it appears into the category Foobar. (This link does not appear where you type it, but instead is collected together with other category links in one list somewhere on the page (depending on the skin you've chosen in preferences). Also, :Category:Foobar would create a regular link without categorizing.) This applies to categorizing categories as well. As you've probably noticed, the list of a category's members is not part of the source, but is generated automatically. So, putting all this together, the way to do this is to create the category page and include the link to the parent category.

Do note one thing, however: we don't like empty categories, so don't create a page for one unless either (a) there is a special reason for it (for instance, Category:User languages and Category:User instruments have several numbered categories for each language/instrument--regardless of whether at least one user is in each of them--for completeness and ease of use), or (b) it already is or will soon be populated. BTW, it is not technically necessary to create a category page for a category to exist. It is sufficient for one or more pages to links to it; viewing the category then results in the list of pages in the category, although it will be prefaced by a notice that the page does not exist. So, basically, having a real page is useful for (1) validating the category, (2) categorizing it, and (3) providing information about it.

Well, I got slightly carried away here, but I hope this all helps. Ddawson 10:31, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

I strongly prefer to have discussions in one place, rather than split across more than one talk page. The latter may be okay for some participants, but it's hard for others to follow, and even for those in the conversation, it's extra work. Therefore, since you wrote on my talk page, I'm continuing the conversation there, and would prefer it stay there. If you want to keep an eye on that page, you can use your watchlist; if the page in question isn't there, you can add it by using the page's 'watch' link. In the default skin, both are located at the top of the page). Ddawson 22:29, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

Explain "Expansion",Alternative history in the article:Fictional Resistance Movements and Groups

your question:

Can this be explained ?Martial Law 05:01, 28 October 2005 (UTC) :)

My response:

The current article has a few organization but they are all from Science Fiction movies/televisions series, most set in the future. I think we can find other examples to add. Alternate history is a recognized genre (where something in the past has changed). It's currently a little short. RJFJR 15:49, 29 October 2005 (UTC)

Loch Ness

I presume you're asking me about Nessie because I'm Scottish? I'm not an expert on the subject I'm afraid, and I don't believe the creature exists. Like most cryptozoology it is the subject of garbled third-hand stories, dubiously focussed photographs and a lot of lies. I don't know the particular story that you're referring to but this is a good source for information, as well as our own page of course. It might be that the bone discovered was that of a Plesiosaur, which is the creature Nessie is popularly identified as. I hope that this was some help, even if I couldn't answer your question. Leithp 09:37, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

No problem, I'm sorry I wasn't able to help out but this isn't really something I know a lot about. Hope you have success in tracking down the information you're after. Leithp 10:02, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

Re your question

  • Why remove info. on Kaufman's UFO incident ?

I am the second editor to revert it and possibly might not be the last. It was not removed just reverted. It would seem that that information would be better in Kaufman UFO,s. In the article Kaufman, Texas it would be a current event whereas the article contains statistical information about the city. Perhaps you could merge it into the Kaufman UFOs article. Thank you.. RE: Aliens

Oh I was just joking around with another user on their talk page. I really don't have much interest in aliens. However I don't fully doubt they exist. As for religious beliefs, mine are fully compatible with believing that life beside animals, plants, etc. exists :) --a.n.o.n.y.m t 17:36, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

Well, it's really a Tangent

"Do you recomend that a PUBLIC investigation of this mess should be initiated? I've read that these riots have spread, have lasted 10+ days. That is why I had asked IF the French government will initiate Martial Law to end these riots. If these riots continue, get worse, cold, hard logic indicates that the French people will DEMAND that something be done about the riots."

I think that initiating martial law would be admitting that they can't address the grievances of the rioters and that they are going to resort to beating them into submission.

I do agree that the French people can't go on like this.

I also think that the reason why most people don't respond to your comments on the Discussion board is because it's getting big and it's there to discuss article editing concerns, not beliefs, etc.

I don't mind talking about this though, but it would be a tangent is this were a discussion on the Riots Discussion page.

Prospecting

Your message about prospecting interests me. Sorry to take so long to get back been working and not much time for wikipedia this week. My husband is a hobby prospector but we haven't tried it there. I don't understand your question, I thought I had just explained how you insert pictures? Is your question more specific now? Just try to experiment with the example I have given above. Also, don't be too concerned about making honest mistakes. Most of the time, people will spot them quickly. It's just that when somebody contradicts you, and you insist that your version is correct that things get complicated. As long as it is just about mistakes, you should have no problems, everybody makes mistakes after all, that's why Wikipedia is a community effort, many eyes and all that :) dab () 12:51, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

Deletion

Aside from the problems with formatting and the like, the implications and effects of alien life contacting ours are addressed in the sections on extraterrestrial life in Extraterrestrial life and Extraterrestrial life in popular culture. I don't think this article can stand on it's own. But that's why we vote on deletions. Kerowyn 08:17, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

I agree with you that the subject of the article has great potential. As a member of the cleanup taskforce, I was hoping to have the chance to work on the article, expanding and exploring the information it contains. I intend to stand by my vote, unfortunately I don't that will be enough to keep the article. Canderson7 00:23, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

I've added this article to my desk, and have put a note on its cleanup taskforce page requesting any assistance that people are willing to give. I hope that if I improve it enough, some voters might reconsider their stance on its AfD. If it is deleted, I'll be happy to work with you to create a more encyclopedic article. Canderson7 02:54, 12 November 2005 (UTC)
I think this article is on the right track now. Since you obviously know a lot about the topic, I encourage you to expand it further. I especially hope to see more said about contact consequences outside of science fiction. Canderson7 23:21, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for alerting me to the cleanup - I've changed my vote to "keep".

Even if the article does somehow get deleted, remember that you will still be able to ask an admin to transfer it to your user space, where you will be able to continue to work on it, and try putting it back in Wikipedia again later - so all will not be lost. But hopefully that won't happen now. — Haeleth Talk 11:23, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

AFD: Contact Consequences

I haven't even voted on it, I only cleaned up the extensive discussion you were having on the vote page. I notice others have mentioned to you as well that talk goes on talk pages, so I won't preach to you about it. In the future, keep discussion as extensive as you got into regarding that AfD on the talk page for it. Extraneous discussion makes the root AfD page a lot harder to load. That aside, had I voted I'd have voted either delete or merge, but since I cleaned it up I'm not getting involved as it's lead to people accusing me of favoritism despite the fact that I'm not an admin. Good luck.  RasputinAXP  T C 00:36, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

The nomination for adminship page is located at Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/nominate, though I'll also say that I'd decline a nomination right now. :)  RasputinAXP  T C 01:34, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for your note. I looked at the article again and at the AfD. The article does look much better but I still can't see what the sources are for it - is there a book or article somewhere which talks about "Contact consequences"? Preaky 03:50, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

Perhaps you could quote from those books? That might help the article. Preaky 04:43, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

I have undeleted the article and moved it to your userspace at User:Martial Law/Contact Consequences. Here you (and others) can work on it in peace to try and make it into a legitimate article with proper sources. If you don't like this solution let me know and I'll delete it again. Canderson7 00:37, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
You are entitled to do (almost) whatever you wish in your own userspace, but I encourage you not to totally rewrite the Contact Consequences article. If you instead work to add citations and such to the version that I undeleted, you will be able to take it to the point where it can be worthy of inclusion in the main namespace. I will help you with that process if you wish. Canderson7 01:58, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
I've returned the parts of the article that were removed. Canderson7 12:14, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
The heading appeared in a box because an extra space had been accidently added to the beginning of the line. I've fixed it and in the future, you can do the same. If you have a book that you are using to add inofmation, I encourage you to cite it at the bottom of the article, that will make what you write more respectable. Improving Contact Consequences

The article is coming along. The fact that you cited a few books in it is great. I've found a few pages that you might want to read, as they'll help you write the article: 1, 2, 3. Just remember to keep the focus on the subject of the article: the consequences of alien contact. You can fix those box things by removing any extra spaces at the beginning of a line. Canderson7 21:28, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

I don't think a picture of supposed aliens would improve the article. On the other hand, the cover of a book or moive in which the aliens make contact might be a nice addition. Canderson7 21:53, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
Real or not, I'd stay away from pictures of aliens for now. The UN building would be fine though. Canderson7 22:21, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
This help page will help you link to other sites from an article. Canderson7 02:24, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
This weekend, I'll take a close look at the article and do some work on it myself. Once I've done that we can step back and see how we're doing. In the meantime, any additions that you can make to it are welcome. Canderson7 04:13, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
The article can be reinstated as soon as all of the issues regarding its content that were raised on its AfD are addressed. I'll help out with this as soon as I get the time to do so. You can help by compliling a list of the issues raised and what has been done to address them.
I have moved the talk page alongside the article. Canderson7 12:24, 22 November 2005 (UTC)

Merging the content into other articles is certainly possible. Just make sure that all content is supported by outside sources and that none of it is original research or speculation. Canderson7 22:10, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

The question now is whether it is best to focus our efforts on getting Contact Consequences to the point where it can be returned to the main namespace, or if it is best to work on merging the information contained therein into others articles and then expanding those articles. For example, much of its current content could be added to First contact (science fiction), and information such as the link you just left me would fit well in Exopolitics. What do you think? Canderson7 00:36, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
The goal of an article around this subject should not be to tell people what to expect (Wikipedia is not a crystal ball). Instead it should relate the facts as they currently stand, citing sources and avoiding anything that even resembles original research. A merge should be performed with these ideas in mind. If you think you can accomplish this, go for it. Canderson7 00:35, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
Telling people what to expect so as to avoid panic would certainly be an admirable mission for a different publication, but not for Wikipedia. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Therefore, its purpose is to portray our current knowledge, not to make predictions about the future. Once supplied with facts, people are capable of coming to their own conclusions about what is to come. Canderson7 04:18, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
Is that what you want to do then (rather than merge it into existing articles)? My opinion is that it will be easier to merge the information than to go through returning it to the main namespace. Let me know, and we can move on to the next step. Canderson7 (talk) 21:40, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

One asks questions (of your nature, i.e. Ares, Artemis, war, etc.)in the proper forum, NOT the discussion page of an article. Your various questions only eat up valuable space. To make matters worse, you ANSWER your own question! Just find a Wonder Woman forum elsewhere and ask your questions there. When you have something constructive to add to the article, it'll be waiting. - The Dragonmaster 12:28, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

Is there any way you'd consider posting a link to that particular article? Or something more... peer-reviewed? --Birdmessenger 01:04, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

Been done. Go to Jeff Rense article: A History Of US Secret Human Experimentation . The article is there in the left column, is titled "A History Of US Secret Human Experimentation" on Jeff Rense's homepage. Martial Law 02:11, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

Hi Martial Law, I placed a request for peer review on the article's talk page so that other heads than mine could provide comment on whether those links tell the reader anything useful about human experimentation. It is my feeling that they don't--but I could be wrong.

Hello there

I noticed your welcome on a new user page. Perhaps it would be better to use a standard welcome such as the one you recieved on your page. The word welcome enclosed within 2 sets of curly brackets will produce a standard welcome message. There is also the page Standard_user_greeting page which can direct you to some different welcome styles created by other users. If you are not sure you can practice it in your sandbox or the community sandbox. Thanks.--Dakota t e 18:56, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

Re the welcome wagon

I'm relatively new @ this sort of thing. Told the new Wikipedian that he or she is in for quite a ride, as it has been for me. Thanks for getting back to me. Your's is quite original. I pasted the above just to be clear. There are standard greetings which are really better to use. A simple and quick welcome which covers helpful links is to type welcome in between 2 curly brackets which will produce the welcome message and just sign at the end. If you need anymore help just let me know on my talk page. Thanks.--Dakota t e 21:59, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

Re attacks question

Hi, if you mean personal attacks this might a good link that can explain it in full.[ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_attacks Personal attacks]. It explains it well and I will add typing all in caps may be considered an attack (it always been deemed shouting in netiquette). If that isn't what you mean let me know. By the way you may need to archive your talk page soon cause it's over 40 bytes. Thanks.--Dakota t e 03:00, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Re:Archiving

This is the link Wikipedia:How to archive a talk page. You must have in it the user talk space though, which would be User talk:Martial Law. Any active discussions should be left on the main talk page. If you need any further help let me know, or need me to do it for you I can do it tomorrow when it's quieter here. Thanks.--Dakota t e

Wonder Woman

First off, always take discussion board postings with a grain of salt. The guy "The Mess" could just be blowing smoke. Now if you can find a legal page or an official DC Comics announcement saying the rights revert back to Moulton's estate, then that's another thing. Personally, I think it's BS myself. Second, this is a completely moot point has my understanding is DC has already announced a new WW series will be starting soon after the completion of the old one ... just like the main Superman title was rebooted and how Marvel rebooted all its old titles a few years ago like Fantastic Four. There's nothing to see here, folks. BTW I do agree that you are dominating the talk page at the Wonder Woman site a bit. I suggest pairing down your questions to the essentials if you want anyone to reply. Cheers. 23skidoo 05:32, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Re;, concerning your (Martial Law's) post to me; Allan Heinberg (sp), the guy who does Young Avengers, is going to be doing Wonder Woman when its rebooted. --DrBat 12:22, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
  1. DC bought out the Marston estate in the mid-late 1980s
  2. In any event, WW isn't being cancelled, just "cancelled" to be relaunched a month later with Terry Dodson on art. It's an excuse to renumber. - SoM 15:41, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Heard that.........

I've been editing the Wikipedia long enough (since 14 January 2005, with over 6,000 edits) that I've developed a small list of admins that I have experience with, that I will contact when there are small problems that I think should be handled with tact and discretion. I've only had a few occasions when I have needed such an admin, but then I deliberately avoid most of the contentious topics on the Wikipedia. If there are any serious problems, I'll just go to WP:AN/I (but I've only had to do that once). BlankVerse 07:45, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Among the flurry of other messages that I've had on my user page recently, I almost missed your last message. In reply, see User:BlankVerse/adminship2 for my current opinion on adminship. I appreciate the offer, but... BlankVerse 08:17, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

DC Comics address

I don't have an address for them. Why not look at their website or pick up a current comic book issue? 23skidoo 03:29, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

Almost too typical for consumer-oriented websites, http://www.dccomics.com doesn't seem to have any address info. Instead, see [2]. BlankVerse 08:25, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
To find an address for Marvel Comics, you can do a Google search, just like I did for DC Comics. You should do a search for: "Marvel Comics"+address [3]. Or you can use Google to do a site search on just the Marvel website (Google site search: [4]; Marvel address found on their "Contact Us" page: [5]). [Adding the Google Toolbar to your internet browser makes it easy to do site searches.] Or you can use a business information website, such as http://biz.yahoo.com [6] or http://hoovers.com [7]. You could have even found the address by starting at the biz.yahoo link for DC Comics that I provided above, since there is a list of Top Competitors for DC Comics that includes Marvel Publishing in the sidebar on that webpage. I see. Thank you for the explanation. --Apostrophe 00:53, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

Punctuation

Hey, I see you're still busy around here. I noticed that you were not adding spaces after periods or commas. Adding spaces after punctuation is part of standard typography and you should follow the practice. Otherwise it's extra work for other editors. Anyway, just a small tip. Article...

You have not yet replied to my above post. Perhpas you didn't see it? I'll copy it below:

Is that what you want to do [reinstate the article] then (rather than merge it into existing articles)? My opinion is that it will be easier to merge the information than to go through returning it to the main namespace. Let me know, and we can move on to the next step. Canderson7 (talk) 21:40, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

I think that the content could be merged to good effect. Let me know what you think. Canderson7 (talk) 18:39, 6 December 2005 (UTC)

Once you have found a page that you want to merge the information into (First contact (science fiction) would be good for a lot of the information), you should follow the directions laid out here (except you don't need to create a redirect in this case). Just make sure that any content that you merge into an existing article is not original research or POV. Canderson7 (talk) 15:37, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

What of military classified data ? A Sgt. Stone got nailed for revealing UFO info and violating the Military Code of Conduct.Martial Law 23:14, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

Could replace the article w/ the merge request w/ it, then when the article is merged, then we could throw it out.Martial Law 23:17, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

Because it cannot be effectively cited , classified info should not be used to support claims made in a Wikipedia article. Even if you yourself have knowledge of such reports, no one else could verify your claims and they would be treated as original research. That being said, declassifed government material is certainly acceptable as a source. Canderson7 (talk) 03:40, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

The Legend of Boggy Creek

The Legend of Boggy Creek. Many things are good here. There are several sources. The spelling is almost perfect. The punctuation is better than your previous articles. May I suggest a different approach to organization? How about putting everything about the making of the movie in one paragraph or section, and information about the legend itself in a another one? Lastly, don't forget some basic "style" issues - we never start an article with a header, but we always make the article title bold in the first sentence. And because it is the title of a move it should also be in italics. We only capitalize the first word in a heading, just like a sentence. On the whole, the article is pretty good. Thanks for contributing to Wikipedia. -Willmcw 00:02, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

What are the errors ? Too many questions ?Martial Law 00:39, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

No, there's still work to be done:
1. Punctuation
2. Spelling
3. Initial heading
4. Format of the article title
5. Capitalization of the headings
6. Organization
After you've fixed all six we can look for other improvements. -Willmcw 00:55, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

Where are these errors ? How do I reformat the article title, initial heading ? Organization ? The DVD is titled in this format:" What Is This About ?". Too many questions ?Martial Law 01:03, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

1. Put a space after each period or comma.
2. Do you have a word processor with a spell chaecker? You can copy the article into it. If not I'll give you a start - there's no "a" in "concern".
3. Delete the entire inital heading
4. Make your first line start: "Movie Title is a documentary..."
5. Don't capitalize the first letter of every word in a heading.
6. I see you've made so improvements. Good.
If you have any questions how other other articles look and make yours look the same. Cheers, -Willmcw 01:12, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
Don't ask me for help again until you've completed task #1. -Willmcw 02:56, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
Keep working on it. I'm not sure why you're having such difficulty with punctuation. -Willmcw 04:53, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
No matter whether you add one, two, or four spaces, the formatting program automatically changes it to one space. You still need a space in and after "Texarkana,AR/TX." -Willmcw 05:00, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
For example, it would be "Houston, Texas", not "Houston,TX". Don't use two-letter abbreviations for states. Also, I wouldn't bother explaining the geography of Texarkana unless it is relevant to the article. Speaking of spaces, don't put a space after a left parentheses. (This), not ( this). -Willmcw 05:11, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
Great, now you can work on the rest. -Willmcw 05:20, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
You are unfamiliar with deletion? It's pretty simple. Open the article for editing. Point your mouse at the end of the material you want to delete, then press the backspace key on your keyboard until it's gone. -Willmcw 05:27, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
Maybe instead of "This movie title is a..." the article should start "The Legend of Boggy Creek is a ..." Do you see why? -Willmcw 17:40, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
Good. Now on to the next step. Treat heading like sentences. You Wouldn't Capitalize Every Word Of A Sentence. Don't do it for a heading either, unless a word is a proper noun, like Texarkana. -Willmcw 01:41, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

You're getting there. You still need to work on #5 a bit more. FYI, on Wikipedia "Internet" is a proper noun, but "sources" is not. Also, you should make your headings match the standards:

  • References
  • External links

Take a look at Wikipedia:Manual of Style (headings) for more help. -Willmcw 05:16, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

We don't call them "Internet sources", we just call them "External links." If you follow the format of typical articles then you'll be fine. Also, see how other articles format their external links. -Willmcw 05:39, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
Non-Internet sources are simply called "sources" or sometimes, "references". If they are books some people will describe them as "further reading." I'd suggest you stick with "Sources" and "External links". As for the number of questions - I don't understand why you can't figure all of this out on your own. There are several hundred thousand articles whose format you can duplicate. Is there some reason why you are unable to read the basic help files or tutorials? I'm glad to help, but you seem to need an extraordinary amount of hand-holding. -Willmcw 05:57, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
Please read Wikipedia:How to edit a page before making any further edits and before asking me any more questions. -Willmcw 06:19, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
Have you read it yet?-Willmcw 00:46, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

UFOs in fiction is better than your last article when it comes to formatting, spelling, and punctuation. Remember that we call external sources "External links" if they are on the Internet. As for the material in the article, is it really true that "in most cases" the Earth (a proper noun) is invaded? Or that the invaders are "usually from Mars"? Those both seem like weasel words. Further your survey of fictional accounts seem to be minimal. Is the article about alien invasions or about UFOs? UFOs played a minimal role in Mars Attacks!, as I recall. -Willmcw 19:25, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

The next step

The next step is simply for you to perform the merge as you see best (remembering what I told you about content guidelines). I suggest First contact (science fiction) as the target for the merge. Perhpaps you should make some new sections, such as one listing science fiction works in which contact takes place and another: ==Beyond science fiction==. If you want to run an idea by someone, or if you have another question, just leave me a message. By the way, good work on UFOs in fiction. Canderson7 (talk) 22:07, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

Bigfoot

Hi there. I'm putting this here because I know you all will see it. I am simply not going to be able to help with the Bigfoot article because I just don't know that much about it and I don't have time for an edit war right now. If Beckjord's views are going to be added, they are going to have to be worded in a nPOV encyclopedic manner and take up only as much space in the article as their prominance would suggest. By this I mean it's not going to be much more than a mention, if anything. All of his ideas are not going to be able to be included because they are such a minority viewpoint as far as I can see.

I will, however, ensure that his link is kept in the External Link section, as it is entirely relevant and should be there. --DanielCD 17:13, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

I can't be here all the time to monitor the article. I know there is a semi-edit war going on. Like I said above, you are not going to be able to tailor the article to Beckjord's views. I'm sorry if I led you to guys believe I would back you up in everything, because I never meant that. I don't know enough about Bigfoot to know exactly what's going on without doing a lot of reading, which I simply have neither the time nor desire to do right now. If the edit fight continues, I'm simply going to revert it to DreamGuy's last edit, protect the page, and seek someone to help you guys mediate. The only edit I'm standing by at this point is the Beckjord link, as stated above. --DanielCD 22:25, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
I don't think you'll get far treding the vandalism route at this point. You need someone to mediate. --DanielCD 22:27, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
I think we've gotten to the point where I simply don't know the answer. Go to Wikipedia:RfC and request that another administrator come and give a comment. Another eye that has not been involved should be able to give an objective opinion. --DanielCD 22:37, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
I know you are probably not; I'm just going on my past experience of Beckjord's edits. That's what he seems to do quite a bit. Perhaps I was a bit rash in that comment. I'm not saying anyone is wrong or right, I just think you sould get a third opinion at the Request for Comment (RfC) forum. I'm just frustrated because I don't have much time this week. --DanielCD 22:40, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
Ok. I'm just confused because I'm not really reading what's going on and DreamGuy's started showing some jackass-attitude to me as well. I'm just going to back off for now (but will retain my position that the Beckjord link stay in ExLs). I wish you guys luck and I wish I could help more; I have to go shortly though. --DanielCD 22:46, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Yes, this is true. There are people who will shoot to kill any intruders, and it is legal. They think you're doing a "B&E", and shoot you. Texas is real notorious for this, so is a few other states. Its called protecting your life and property from criminals, especially if you live in a remote area instead of a city.Martial Law 23:23, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Guess this is why holiday guides contain short primers on the peculiarities of local law. So in the U.S. you can legally get shot for something that might happen accidentally. Okay, "Technically, a person violates the law against trespassing by knowingly going onto someone else's land without consent." (LawBytes) but it's hard to tell from a dead body, isn't it? Fortunately where I live the state has a monopoly on violence. Shinobu 23:42, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

You can, for instance, if you see a burglar in you own house, you can kill him, and it is called justifiable homicide, because the guy was there to rob you, even kill you.Martial Law 23:38, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

But trespassing is a lot broader, I understand. Shinobu 23:43, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

The property owner does'nt know it is a accident, he or she will think you're breaking into his/her house, property, and shoot you. This has happened repeatedly. An expression for this is "A Man's house is his castle". More than likely, he or she will not "buy" the accident scenario either.Martial Law 23:55, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

I'm glad I don't live in the U.S. - one might argue that the chances of an accident are slim, but they're there, especially when you're talking about land in a rural area instead of a house. I guess this is why out here only the police is allowed to use violence. You may however hold someone until the police arrives, and self-defense is allowed within reasonable bounds. Shinobu 00:15, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

You in the UK or the British Commonwealth ? Heard one year on the news about the new FL law that allows people to kill any who they believe are committing a crime against them. In Louisiana, if you even think you are about to be "car jacked", you can kill the offender and the DA/Atorrney Gen. is actually forbidden to prosecute the victim of said car jacking.Martial Law 00:25, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

Hard to believe it's almost 2006... I'm Dutch - the situation is a bit different here. According to http://www.politie.nl/Overige/Overdepolitie/watdoetdepolitie/#Geweldsmonopolie if an officer hits a civilian with a bullet he actually commits a "punishable fact" (litteral translation of "strafbaar feit" or "delict" - it means something forbidden by Law, and therefore punishable), although he'll get away with it if it was necessary. contains more information, but it is in Dutch. Perhaps Babelfish will help. [8] It's surprising how much common words and sentence constructions Babelfish doesn't get, but it's largely understandable. Shinobu 00:48, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

On Dutch drug policy

Ever hear of these American radio Talk show hosts: Michael Savage, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Roger Fredinburg ? Input into Google: US Radio Talk Show hosts,Conservative.

Heard from these that drug use is legal "overseas". This true ?Martial Law 01:05, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

Do NOT mean to be offensive, if so I do apologise.Martial Law 01:07, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

No offence taken - I agree with you that Dutch drug policy can be quite odd at times, although most drug use is illegal. Depending on the offence you can be either ignored completely, fined or jailed. Because capital punishment has been abolished Singaporesque situations don't occur.
However, it is my personal view that drug severity and the corresponding penalties don't match up.
Sorted (accoding to my personal opinion) on overall health / social effect:
  1. caffein & nicotin - legal
  2. soft drugs - gedoogd
  3. alcohol - legal
  4. smoking - illegal in some public places
  5. hard drugs - illegal
"Gedoogd" is the past participle of "gedogen". Some offences are considered - though technically illegal - of such limited severety that the police ignore those; this is called gedogen. "hard drugs" are those drugs on list I of the Opiumlaw. Although caffein and nicotine could be considered "hard drugs" as well in terms of addictive strength, they cause less health problems and are not forbidden by the Opiumlaw. The problem with smoking is basically the combination of the addictive power of nicotin combined with the health effects of the other ingredients (like tar) - I've listed it seperately. "Soft drugs" are those drugs on list II of the Opiumlaw. I believe some are legal on doctor's prescription, but I'm not sure.
So yes, some drugs are legal, but not all. My advice: don't come here for the drugs. Apart from the risk of getting jailed after all, drugs can pose a severe health risk. Shinobu 01:50, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
P.S. That last one was tongue-in-cheek by the way - I hope I didn't offend. The list is sorted in increasing order of "badness". Shinobu 02:25, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
Just in (now we're on the topic): AMSTERDAM - The Amsterdam municipal council has agreed to a blowing-ban in areas where youth are causing nuisance (note: this is a Dutch euphemism for generally being a pain in the ass for everyone around, violent and/or imposing behaviour, etc.). The mayor may decree a blowing-ban for a period of one year.
Translated from Dutch press release; it appears violation of the ban would be punishable with a fine of €45 ($53.45). Shinobu 03:08, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

One of these radio personalities, can't recall which one, indicated that you can smoke dope on "4th and Main", out in the open and the police would'nt do anything, since it is legal. In Singapore and similar places, they have this saying about illegal drugs: "DA DA Means Drugs, DA DA Means Death", meaning the penalty for having illegal drugs is a capital offense. Hope I'm not being offensive. Martial Law 05:19, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

If you're American, smoking dope is illegal. In British dope stands for marijuana, which is on List II of the Opiumlaw, and generally gedoogd (unless you cause other nuisance). However, in American dope stands for heroin or methamphetamine. These are on List I, so depending on whether other offences were commited, they might be punishable with ca. 5 years. Might be less if there were mitigating circumstances, more if e.g. dealing was part of the offence. In the UK however, heroin is sometimes (on prescription) used as a heavy painkiller.
Offtopic: By the way, out here we don't number streets, so I'm not sure what to make of "4th and Main", but I guess it means something like near the city centre, right?
As I hinted in a previous post, I'm aware of Singapore's strict drug policy. It should be noted however that laws in Singapore are generally very strict and that in Singapore people get death sentences, tortured and long jail terms for all kinds of offences.
Considering the previous posts I don't think either of us is offended by talking about drugs, so let's just assume good faith, that's easier than preventative apologizing all the time ;-) Shinobu 14:55, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

Hello, I've been out of town for 6 days and I just replied to your message on my user page. Bubba73 (talk), 15:50, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

wave?

what's wave? It's a good thing somebody like dyslexic is following me since I have bat temper and soo poor self control... but i feel humiliated when he blind revert's my edits and puts rude coments on the summaries; he is not even trying to copyedit my stuff he just either blind reverts it or just massacres it. And he never writes anything for any article, and the only time he did he was way wrong*.

There is not one single page I can go he won't follow me. It's like he is forbidding me to edit anything. Wherever I go he follows; who ever I talk to he talks to. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy! what can I do? It'd be ok if he followed me to copiedit the mistakes I'm sure I can make, already told him I wouldn't mind first consulting with me before editing... Ieven tried once. I think he is not willing cooperate. I feel like he is just sensoring me and whatever I write. I'm not sure, but I think the first thing he does in the morning is check my contributions and undo them all. I feel like I can't be productive anymore.

I have done good things in the past. The list of villains categories format was my idea (I think) It was a messy alphabetical semicategoized list when I found it, and I stuck there and after a couple monts, my good friend, Josiah Rowe (who probably did more than myself), and myself finished categorizing all villains an now it doesn't get nominated for deletion on a regular basis. I also did the Bat-Embargo page. From nothing. A page I'm afraid he want's to massacre. I have to assume good faith... but still...I dunno he said: **

But since he started folliwing me I'm not abble to acomplish anything. I've been rude in the past ans I feel sorry for myself whenever I have to admit it. The truth is that I really admire Rosiah, Cleared as Filed's temple and I'd like to be like them. But I can't change that fast... I'm too stubborn, and red boned, it's not so easy... I'm trying though, but cred is a hard thing to get once you lost it, everybody expects me do be rude and they don't buy me when I try to change.

I guess I'm just asking for advice. I wouldn't like Dyslexic to be baned or punished in any way, and I'm not even asking you to talk to him. I think he is a good guy after all. But I don't know what to do. It's a nightmare. And I'm confused and depressed, I only want you and a couple of other editors who I'm also asking, to iluminate me with some of your wisedom. I'm asking for kind words of advice.

* The only 2 times I can recall he wrote something, Dyslexic Agnostic was horribly mistaken. here... Check it out To me, this is almost insulting. And I my vertion clearly says that the Ventriloquist, Black Mask and Killer Croc are from 80's. Dyslexic don't even seems to pay attention to what he blind reverts...uh, right, blind revert. I get it.
** Sorry, but I can't... I don't see why this Bat-embargo is so important! It only applies to DC animated series, which are not important in themselves. Dyslexic agnostic 17:54, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
And I replied:
I get the feeling you are just going to wet yourself laughing at my sorry ass...but I'm starting to get the feeling you actually don't care for the Animated series...or anything you edit at all: I haven't seen you put some info yet*, but only take of whatever I write. And reduce, reduce, reduce... There are other ways of editing, you know?
I'm very sorry to say so, but what else can I think? you "edit" (or more like blind reverse) my whole contribs list! What else can I think of you??! To me, you don't think anything is worth having in an article. This is the only track I can think of you: Save memory, save memory, save memory! Your Advice

Martial Law,

I would like to know what you think of the battle being waged between Scm83x and myself. He has admitted that he knows nothing about Native American history etc. So why is he still trying to put his hands in the cookie jar? Shall I smack his lil' hands? --Bumpusmills1 00:57, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Admin help request

What assistance do you need? I am familiar with Native American culture.--Alabamaboy 01:31, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Go to User:Bumpumills1's User page. I'll let him know he has assisstance.

I went there and am still figuring out the situation. Question: Was there a complete article at Native American spirituality before User:Bumpusmills1 moved the page?--Alabamaboy 01:41, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
The content of the page Native American spirituality was the content of the new page Cherokee society. This revolves around my efforts to make this article conform to WP:MoS through this diff. I am unsure what the issue is with this. -Scm83x 01:48, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Alboy the article was in its very early stages and it was not complete at all. The other user did not seem to understand this. I am new to wikipedia and thus far my experience has been less than enjoyable. I attempted to leave wikipedia this morning by Martial and some others posted things that told me I needed to stay on. This is my heritage in this article and it is coming from the heart. I'm learning more everyday, but certain individuals need to back off and give me some space. It is like they're breathing down my neck. I'm sure you don't appreciate that sort of thing either. If you can assist me I surely would appreciate it. --Bumpusmills1 01:53, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

As I said in my comments, I'd strongly suggest separating the two articles. Let the Cherokee society article be about that and let Native American spirituality be about that. Best, --Alabamaboy 02:18, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I'm aware Bumpusmills1 stirred up some trouble. However, he seems sincere in wanting to fit in here and so I'm putting this down to being new. Best,--Alabamaboy 15:46, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

RFAR

Hi, Martial Law, let me explain. You asked about RFAR and RFC on User talk:Android79. (Well, you said "RFA", but that means something different.) Yes, you're right, RFAR, Requests for arbitration, is the nearest thing Wikipedia has to a court. It's the end stage of dispute resolution, where the Arbitration Committe examines the behavior of users and sometimes--often--sanctions them. RFC, Requests for comment, is an earlier stage, where the community is asked for their opinions about a user; there are no sanctions involved in an RFC, but there is often criticism.

You can read all about these two processes on the pages WP:RFAR and WP:RFC. I was recommending Android and Friday to file a Request for arbitration against Beckjord right away, instead of going via an RFC first. Beckjord is behaving so badly that I think an RFC would be a bit of a waste of time. He won't care about the community's opinion of him, I presume, since he hasn't cared so far. I'm feeling that enough time has been wasted on trying to explain to B. what kind of a site this is. Either he just doesn't get it, or he just doesn't care. Please don't get all worried again, Martial Law! Bishonen | talk 00:10, 14 January 2006 (UTC).

MARTIAL LAW

One way to make you read this...

WAFE people will distrupt and trash the BF page as long as people like Android and DG keep reverting. Reverts are an insult. Normal people may re edit, but not total revert.\

Also applies to Patterson-Gimlin film, and other paranormal stuff.

Solution: get rid of those two, ask them to go way, uncheck watch boxes, and let researchers add material, and experiernced wiki peopoe can "clean up" the references.

OTHERWISE THIS PAGE WILL BE TRASHED FOREVER.

Wikipedia has their version of Martial Law. The article will be locked down, and only admins. will be able to edit the article. I don't think WAFE has any Admins in it that I know of. Martial Law 21:30, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

hello

Thank you for your kind words.

But I have given up on Wikipedia. My colleagues, friends, and family warned me about Wikipedia, but I was more hopeful, trusting and optimistic. But no longer.

I do not want to fill out forms to report rudeness of other editors, but if you care to do so:

A user with name Ewlyahoocom claimed that I was "crowing about how much money" I "made on inestments" (improper spelling is his or hers, not mine), when I reported on the stock history of a corporation. I made no such investments; how audacious of this Wikipedia editor. See AAPL discussion.

A user with name Grahamuk ranted at me as soon as I edited an article, calling me a "sockpuppet" although I always sign in, and telling me that my editing "annoyed people" and that I should stop annoying people. I checked his contributions and histories. He calls other users "fools", "monkeys" and such, and has a rambling essay with improper grammar on his user page showing how self-important he thinks he is and how he dislikes other folks.

I also wanted to tell about some of my experiences from years ago that might be interesting; User Ewlyahoocom derided me for this also.

I give up. Wikipedia is like all chat rooms; I will not tolerate such disrespect of myself or of others. If Ewlyahoocom and Grahamuk and others like them are allowed to spew personal insults at me and others, this is no place for civilized people, and does not deserve our efforts, time, or monetary contributions.

DeveloperFrom1983 10:25, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

Life is terribly unfair, isn't it. However, it really isn't fair to extrapolate from one isolated remark an entire personality profile of somebody, and to then further judge this project on that basis. Instead of going around writing to editors left, right and centre whining about the way you feel you've been aggrieved, why not contribute some worthwhile content so that it may be judged on its merits? Nobody's opinion counts for any more than anybody else's, unless they earn that respect by contributing solid, worthwhile articles. Unfortunately it doesn't matter whether you are a retired professor or the Queen of England, none of that counts for anything - this is a meritocracy based solely on what you contribute. You may have been the innocent victim of an ongoing dispute with another user - or there is some circumstantial evidence that you are that other user under another name. The jury is still out, but let's assume good faith. Certainly I am not in the habit of biting newbies, but if somebody contests your edits then you need to look as objectively as possible at why that is, instead of complaining bitterly about it. In nearly all cases, discussing edits on an article's talk page (which is what they are for) will allow you to reach an accommodation with even the most ruthless editors. Various well-meant advice to this effect was offered to you numerous times; you declined that approach. For my own part I have pointed out to you at length why there were problems with your Apple Computer edit, you appear to be unwilling to accept that the advice is impartial and impersonal. Since then, you have insulted me far more vociferously and forcefully that I ever did you, so you might wish to review your own part in this. I thinkst thou dost protest too much... or perhaps you are concatenating my remarks to you and your apparent alias in this matter, which makes me wonder... You call me "self-important" while writing diatribes all over the place, demanding respect where you have not demonstrated any reason to show you any. It is you who is acting pompously here my friend. I apologise to Martial Law for not taking his advice and burying ther hatchet here, (and for dragging the argument onto his talk page), but the simple truth here is that I am only intested in the quality of the encyclopedia, I have no interest in personalising anything. But if you insist on complaining about me to every editor you come across, I have no choice but to vigourously defend myself. The fact is that the history of the various articles we have edited record for all time the plain truth - and so will reveal that the so-called insults that I have "spewed" at you are nothing of the sort, and are just the plainspeaking remarks that crop up all the time during the knockabout of editing. If you are so thin-skinned that it upsets you that much, perhaps this isn't going to be the place for you, but that's for you to decide. I have no axe to grind, except to defend myself against your exaggerated complaints. I'd rather forget all about this, but if you insist on damaging my name and reputation with other editors, you will find me unwilling to simply roll over and accept it. I have made a comment, somewhat on his behalf, at the arbitration. I invite you to read it, if you wish. If you have anything to say, I'd also invite you to add it. If you can, please talk to Beckjord and see if you can coax him to make some sort of a statement regarding his frustraions with Wikipedia and about his comments and future intentions. I'll take it and rephrase it appropriately if needed. But regardless, it's in the hands of the arbitration counsel now. --DanielCD 14:58, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

Hello,

An Arbitration case in which you commented has been opened: Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Beckjord. Please add evidence to the evidence sub-page, Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Beckjord/Evidence. You may also contribute to the case on the workshop sub-page, Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Beckjord/Workshop.

On behalf of the Arbitration Committee, Kelly Martin (talk) 01:23, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

In response to your inquiry: You are free to contribute evidence (that is, actual references to conduct that the Arbitrators can look at) on the Evidence page of the relevant Request for Arbitration (see above links). You are also free to participate in the shaping of the decision on the Workshop page. Since you are not a party of the dispute, your participation is entirely voluntary, and (unless exceptional circumstances exist) you can safely ignore the Arbitration entirely. Kelly Martin (talk) 04:04, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

Do be advised that I am not an Arbitrator (I merely help them out with mechanical tasks like opening and closing cases, notifying parties, etc.). Bigfoot References

Hey ML,

I see you added the documentaries as references for the Bigfoot article. Are you planning on writing some materiel that uses those references as a source, or citing some existing material in the article as coming from those references? Because that's what references are supposed to be on Wikipedia: sources that are cited to verify the information in an article. If you don't have any information from those sources that you want to add to the article, you should remove the references, or someone else might later. —Bunchofgrapes (talk) 04:06, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

No, look: citing "sources" that aren't sourcing information in the article is useless. Wikipedia does not try to serve as an exhaustive bibliography on its subjects; sources must be utilized. Sources that sort of vaguely cover some of the material already in an article in a wishy-washy way aren't very useful either. —Bunchofgrapes (talk) 06:15, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

UFO

Sorry Martial, I didn't know you messaged me until today, I don't frequent Wiki much anymore, just about once a month. Anyway, I heard of the Brookings Report - basically it says if the govt ever publically announced there are ET's everyone would freak out and we'd have mass hysteria. I heard of cases where normal people have an encounter and when they try to report something the feds destroy their credibility. The govt won't listen to you, so you have to go to obscure and strange people who will, (new agers, and psychics and stuff like that) and they're written off as wackos and nutjobs.

Anyway, I saw a black triangle once, (sort of like my picture I made on the Triangles page) with bright white and red lights that slowly and silently flew over me and a group of friends when i lived in Pennsylvania, so I had witnesses that seen it too.

Another time in Ohio, I saw a series of strange lights in the sky over Lake Erie, however, I didn't think "UFO's", and I actually ignored them because I was involved with something else at the time. But the next day the local media was buzzing about UFO reports coming in the night before. I was like "Damn, I saw that too!"

Anyway, like X-Files, "the truth is out there"... SkeezerPumba 20:43, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Its the Robertson Panel that states that people will be discredited and ridiculed. Since shrinks are used in this, the ridicule is often that witnesses, other interestred parties are to be declared mentally unfit, i.e. as nutjobs, insane and the like. Martial Law 21:50, 15 March 2006 (UTC) :I

I have never experienced an earthquake but my mother lost her car in Northridge Earthquake in 1994. I was out of state with my dad at the time so missed it. It created a lot of damage and destroyed a lot of property.--Dakota ~ ° 06:25, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

I've given the article a basic cleanup, and its now a good stub. My question though is whether the website is notable enough to have an article about it in an encyclopedia. I had the same concern about UFOdigest.com, which has since been deleted. Canderson7 (talk) 01:30, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedians who experienced Paranormal activity

Hey, maybe you could start a paranormal userbox (see: Wikipedia:Userboxes) and make one for Wikipedians who have experienced the Paranormal. That might be better than just a list on your userpage, and could help start a network of those to share their stories. I checked to see if one already existed but couldn't find one. It should probably go under category Interest Userboxes. SkeezerPumba 21:29, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

I would recomend you help with my paranormal project for Wikipedia, If you would find a good image then I could get a userbox started....Mahogany-wanna chat?

Paranormal Group

Martial, I would say it's best if we start our own project page on Wikipedia for these reasons

  1. When we have articles such as Kaufman UFO's about to be deleted we can save those articles
  2. Many times I have seen pitiful articles(I'll find a few for review)
  3. And we could start a patrol to revert edits by those who screw with our paranormal articles
  4. Also to create new articles

Agreed?--Mahogany-wanna chat? 15:20, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Things to do for the project before we start it is

  1. See if we could get any other Wikipedians to join
  2. Get a name appropiate for it
  3. Get a nice userbox going (probably upload an appropiate image also)
  4. ???

-Mahogany-wanna chat?

WE would have to be careful. Part of the Robertson Panel protocol is that all UFO groups are to be spied upon by the Feds, infiltrated, destroyed, like some past UFO related groups were. Martial Law 02:58, 28 March 2006 (UTC) :)
RE.: The last sentence in the "Publicity and Responses" says that a 1976 memo in the CIA indicates this, especially spying on UFO groups. Why spy on them, unless they are to be terminated. Martial Law 03:26, 28 March 2006 (UTC) :)
I'll see what I can do on this end. Martial Law 03:27, 28 March 2006 (UTC) :)
Cool, I'll start the club on this Wikipedia: Paranormal Watchers and so you know I live on the east coast?-Mahogany-wanna chat?
Does the F.B.I. even mess with UFO researchers anymore being that the Robertson Panel had the desired effect anyone who even talks about UFO's ect. are frowned upon Mahogany-wanna chat? by the by any users come to mind who would happily join our project?
Its added insurance, to make examples of these people to deter others. It is not just the F.B.I. Try the I.R.S. , which is also used in pointless tax audits, one after another. Just alerted the Wikipedia news organization. May get personnel that way. Martial Law 19:04, 29 March 2006 (UTC) :)
Note that part of the Robertson Panel article does mention that UFO groups and organizations are to be spied upon. Why do so, unless these are to be eliminated ? Martial Law 19:09, 29 March 2006 (UTC) :)

You may want to get rid of #2. The Nessie picture is appropriate, but the fair use guidelines, prevent the image from appearing outside of article space. I'm not sure about the clip-art though. You might just want to have a generic acronym though.--Toffile 05:02, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
That leaves us with the UFO picking up a Earth person. Martial Law 21:12, 30 March 2006 (UTC) :)
Actually, I'm fairly certain that the image is incorrectly licensed. Mahogany/chrisblack uploaded it with the copyright holder releasing all rights to it, but I'm not sure on that's correct, as it's picked off a website with no copyright status.--Toffile 22:18, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Ridicule

People mock what they don't understand... it's a function of society. It has the benefit of keeping the true crackpots in line... sometimes at the cost of those who are right. I don't think the government needs to spend too much energy pushing that little societal trait... seems to happen all by it's self. American Patrol

It seems you have been placing references to American Patrol on several articles. I suppose some mention of it is warranted in the Aztlán article, but internal links should not go under the "external links" section. That is the place for, obviously, external links. If AmPat has an article or a press release about the word Aztlan or its use, it can go there. It is better for you to find it and list it then to send our readers on what may be a wild goose chase by telling them to "See current and archived articles pertaining to Aztlan".

On the article La Raza, however, I don't think the reference is appropriate. This is probably rooted more in Spencer's ignorance than yours, but the comment "La Raza is a criminal organization" makes no sense after the article has just explained the several organizations use the words "La Raza" as part of their title. The same may be true of Savage, but I haven't read any articles about it (know of any?)

On MEChA, we have a similar issue. The reference whould go under the "criticism" section, not "Critics", which is a subsection of the External links section.

You talk about Spencer like you know him. Do you?--Rockero 21:38, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

I have seen his website before. Truthfully, it makes me sick to my stomach. He has probably done more than anyone else to foment anti-Mexican sentiment here in the U.S. I did hear that bit about his "proving" that it was possible to sneak "WMD" into the US over the southern border. By wearing a backpack, I believe? And no other site reported it but his? The most far-out rumors originate on his site, and sometimes are picked up by NewsMax or WorldNetDaily.
I tend to be wary of sites that are run by "just some guy", even if they do get a lot of web traffic. I am also wary of adding "What Glenn Spencer says about ..." to every article. It seems to give the guy too much cred.
Savage sounds like he's even worse.
I'll take a look at the Aztlan sites. They may be all right to go under the External links section, since people are bound to keep putting those types of links anyways.--Rockero 07:24, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
The first link was a blog by a guy named "Greg Strange", so that won't do. The second link was bad 8(--Rockero 07:28, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi there again, ML. I really appreciate your willingness to share information with me, but frankly, I am not interested in the topics you have made comments about on my talkpage. Well, there's no facility to delete accounts. Even if there were, what would stop someone else from coming along, re-registering with the name "Martial Law", and claiming to be you again? And we don't like to block people, even if they ask to be blocked themselves, because sometimes it causes collateral damage -- blocking other people who may use the same IP range. The best you could do would be to change your password to something really long and complicated, I'm afraid. —Bunchofgrapes (talk) 01:14, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

I've cleaned up this article per your request. A few basic things to remember are: tag stubs, make the title bold where it first appears in the article, and don't include the title as a heading at the beginning of the article. Canderson7 (talk) 21:46, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Anything at All

If there ia anything I can do for you to help you such as a background check for the people you're going to help and info on the entities Mahogany

I have 10x binoculars, so that I can see if the target is a UFO and not some kind of plane. The plane can be flying at 900,000', but I can still ID it w/ the 10x binoculars. I also have a 100x-1,000x telescope as well. So far, the entities I've encountered was a Shadow Person and a cloaked entity. Encountered the cloaked entity when you had your alien experience. Just got a 3M candlepower light as well, to use on UFOs, not aircraft.

Both were only observing, no interaction happened. Martial Law 20:14, 2 May 2006 (UTC) :)

I'd say you've got it under control then but watch yourself Mahogany

?!

Regarding the last edit you made to my talkpage. Did you have a specific question?--Rockero 20:14, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

"Hispanos Unidos" means "United Hispanics", and "No Seran Vencidos" means "will not be defeated". "Que Viva La Raza!" means, "Long live La Raza!". The literal translation of "La Raza" ("the race") does not due the Spanish-language term justice. Some people give the alternate translation of "humanity". But generally it is a broad term used to refer to people of Latin American. Hope this satisfies your curiosity, --Rockero 21:12, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
I assume that the "local reactions" you are referring to are responses to the Great American Boycott. This rumor is frightening and disconcerting, but not trustworthy. I haven't heard anything about it in the media. And of course it is always prudent to be wary of "information" from groups or individuals with an agenda. My question is, who is using the bellicose language, and who is demonstrating peacefully? My advice is to not take these rumors seriously. And definitely don't include them in any Wikipedia articles. Thanks, --Rockero 21:45, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

West Coast Air Raid and the 9/11 UFO

Hey there. I'm a strong believer in UFOs and I feel they must exist. This is not a new phenomenon either, including how a few UFO sightings caught the attention of our armed forces. You heard of the West coast air raid over Los Angeles of 1942? The sighting of an unusually fast and bright object over the skies of war-gittery Los Angeles is well-documented. You should read the wikipedia article and come back on your comments or opinions on the 63-year old mystery. Also is the publicized UFO over the World Trade center on 2001:September 11, some argue those are pieces from the crashed airliner after direct impact. Other theorists suggest the UFO is top-secret interceptive US Air Force aircraft, to promote those conspiracy theories that 9/11 was planned. What's your opinion on this matter? I'm surprised not much posts on Talk: UFOs as it is a hot topic to draw such a crowd. All I know is I seen UFOs as a child and still watch the skies for any spacecraft, orbs and the like. I can tell a planet, army aircraft and unearthly space craft apart, and I can identify a UFO landing mark, no matter how others may disagree. They are likely a real phenomenon for the world to know that aliens from outer space are watching us as their scientific subject. We're in for a big surprise I tell you and the skeptics will start thinking more seriously of UFOs. If all the governments won't disclose about the existence of UFOs, then something is up to prevent the people from knowing what is up there. Gtg now...later + 207.200.116.135 07:25, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

While responding, something has jammed my terminal. Seen these matters. I'm currently on a semi-functional Satellite link. I've seen both military and civilian aircraft myself. Found out that the most powerful nations have made a Devil's Deal with aliens, and part of it allows the outright ridicule, forced imprisonment into nut houses and/or termination of citizens who report forbidden matters, especially UFOs and/or aliens. See Robertson Panel, which is a CIA protocol initiated to ridicule people who see UFOs, aliens. Martial Law 18:18, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

Robertson Panel

Your right! The goverment is trying to make fools out of anyone who claim to have seen an alien or ufo! That makes me downright angry! Unlike you, I only think I saw a ufo, I'm not sure if it was or not, and I've never seen an alien.... I hate the goverment (I like the constitution, though)! ~VNinja~ 22:40, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

Woah.... We should get together and look for ufos and stuff sometime, maybe next year's wikimania, we could probly get together then, not this year, I can't make it then. ~VNinja~ 22:46, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

You amaze me with your expierence and knowlodge of aliens and the unknown! ~VNinja~ 23:01, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

I, and others have been investigating these matters, to find out what is going on. I have heard that the most powerful nations had made a "Devil's Deal" with aliens in 1947, and part of it is that they get to, on our terms, do what they want, and we get their (junk) hi-tech. Now I've heard that a second group of aliens that we call "The Andromedans" is enroute here to remove the other aliens, but that the other aliens will not move, so we'll be in a war. Seen Star Wars The Return of the Jedi ? It'll be like that, only that we'll be caught in the middle of it. Seen this kind of thing in foreign news sources and on the 'net itself. This is rumored to take place in 2012. Martial Law 00:46, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
They've been saying that for years, I believe it's already happened. B/c notice how UFO's have not been seen lately also abductions have dropped. --Mahogany 04:18, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
They're still being seen. Current govt. protocol, such as the Robertson Panel forbids people to report UFOs, aliens. See UFO Casebook's website for more info. Also do a Google search as well. Texas is still reporting them, so is Phoenix, Arizona. Martial Law 18:24, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
Wait I thought the Robertson Panel was shutdown with the desired effect that the discussion of this "forbidden knowledge" would be frowned upon? --Mahogany 17:43, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Websites on UFO's

Hey Martial what's the deal with no contact? Anyways remeber all those sites such as "Terrifying UFO expirence" They seem to have disapeared? I don't know, keep in contact --Mahogany 04:16, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the sites, but I was drawing to attention that most of the other sites you showed me have been deleted --Mahogany 17:10, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
The govt. does'nt like people probing UFOs. Ask a man who is on his way to do 70 YEARS hard time in the U.S. because he found something on UFOs that is'nt approved for release. He says they're for real, and that aliens are visiting us. Martial Law 00:38, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
Oh don't get me wrong I know somethings visiting us but the question is what? --Mahogany 17:32, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

RE: UFO's not being seen

I meant that something is happening lately where either the gov't has a new more efficient protocol to tone down UFO reports or they're being seen in some other area. Seriously ML look at more recent sites then compare them to older ones and you can tell that reports are not coming in so much anymore. --Mahogany 17:31, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Plus I think you're getting me wrong, I still believe that the world is being visited by something it's just that something is making these reports be toned down alot! (When was the last report of the MIB you know b/c I can't find anymore on them after the early 90's) --Mahogany 17:41, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
Regarding the Phoenix picture how the hell did others not report that sob, I mean that thing is clearly amazing well I don't know if it's a hoax it's a damn good one --Mahogany 17:55, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

I don't think they were faked either it just seems screwy that no one else reported this ship, (Also I thought I was paranoid check this site Black Vault) Who knows how many gov't protocols were created to destroy lifes of those interested in UFO's ect. The real question is how many are still alive and working (That's to brighten your day :) --Mahogany 19:10, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Where is more info on Project Blackbook? --Mahogany 19:12, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
Everytime I look for it I get marketing, accounting sites --Mahogany 19:15, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
Don't worry I never use my name, adress anything at all that could give myself away. But if you're at liberty could you clue me in where you got this info so I can check it out. (I know this is dangerous even talking about, but if you have an informant forget it I won't ask) --Mahogany 19:29, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
Well that's the stupidest idea I've heard in a while, leak it to the tabloids to get the info out. Yes some people will hear of it but the truth will be questioned. Also be careful (unless of course you're working for the gov't) b/c if you get to close they will shoot. What are you hoping to find at the facility anyways? --Mahogany 19:49, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
It's so so b/c not many people take the tabloids seriously (Most don't even buy it) with the bat baby, Elvis alive crap. What is the name of the tabloid magazine? --Mahogany 19:59, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

There's nothing wrong with being certain Goverment workers, many times in my life I've had the urge to work with the FBI. I love investigating murders. But I hate the one's on top with no respect for the people. --Mahogany 20:02, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

RE: UFO Hacker

Remeber when I told you UFO sites were being shut down? This guy had to have got the goverment good so the gov't has to be erasing evidence and ways to contact him. --Mahogany 17:52, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

RE: UFO Sighting

I assume you're still in the Texas, New Mexico area, which sees probably more UFO's per month than most places per year. The UFO you saw is becoming more common (as of 1995 lol!) but still you should keep checking for reports. --Mahogany 17:55, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Kungfuadam...

Kungfuadam, let's talk. Martial Law 03:28, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

ML, it's a system feature. Kungfuadam had nothing really to do with it. He blocked some clown with an inappropriate username, like he's supposed to. Unbenowest to him, that guy had recently used the same IP address that you are using. When you tried to edit, the Mediawiki software detected that and -- without even notifying Kungfuadam -- autoblocked you. It happens all the time, it's not a big deal, sorry for the inconvenience. —Bunchofgrapes (talk) 03:34, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi, Martial Law. I removed your thread on the adminstrators' noticeboard. Is there a article about this website on Wikipedia ? Saw the ad on TV. It claims that "Big Oil" is suppressing all manner of discoveries, such as claiming that H2O w/ gas will get a car to do 100mpg. I would not recommend putting 80% water in your gas tank. I just wouldn't. And if these people had really discovered a way to run a car for 100 miles with NO POLLUTION as they say, they wouldn't be running a shifty online site that tries to get you to order something online, not quite sure what. --Bmk 03:02, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Also, your addition of two commercial links to 2006 Atlantic hurricane season have been reverted - firstly, you listed them as media, which they are not; secondly it could be seen as advertising. – Chacor 05:44, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Well, a key thing is Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. One cannot say it will occur until it does. I know your link additions were in good faith, but they could definitely be seen as adverrtising (both are commerical sites), and they're definitely not media. – Chacor 05:53, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

your comment on my Talk Page

Hello and thanks for saying "Hi". Actually no, I have not seen anything I would consider a UFO in the classic sense - something from off this earth. I do however live in Southern Califnornia and frequently spend some time near where reputed Black Aircraft are flown. I have seen what others refer to as the Aurora - me, I don't know what it was beyond a military aircraft of advanced design. I'm something of an aviation enthusiast and I would recognize the outline of most US and Russian aircraft modern and vintage. I have also seen what appeared to be an experimental craft similar to the Ospry but much freakier and a Helicopter that looked like a troop carrying 'copter but was unusually silent. I don't think any of those are alien - just classified technology.

As for Close Encounters - I try to keep an open mind although I do believe that some of the classic abduction experiences are neurological in nature. As a Folklorist, I have compared classic abduction descriptions with numerous other cultural phenomena such as Hawaiian Choking Ghosts, The Old Hag Syndrome, Mare-riddden experiences and so-on. I have had personal experience with sleep-paralysis myself and I know all too well how frightening that feeling of presence is. My mind is not made up about whether it was all sleep-paralysis or something beyond that. I certainly saw no little green or grey men but I was aware of a presence that literally made me feel as if I was enveloped by evil. As a scientist, I know such feelings can be induced by infra-sound and by magnetic fields. Still when it happens to you, it is indeed frightening. A dear friend of mine who is quite sane believes with all his heart that he has been an abductee since choldhood. I choose to judge him and simply offer him support when the memories cause him suffering.

I think when it comes to hwat people call the paranormal - how you percieve the truth of it is a cultural things as much as an intellectual thing. The die-hard skeptics I know practice their skepticism as ardently as any religious person practices their faith. I feel there is no difference between a devout Christian and a person who "knows" without any real experience or investiugation that what someone else has seen is "not true". There is a middle ground where one can value the other person's experience without condescension and still attempt to arrive at an explanation. I hope this explains where I come from. Thansk again for the shout out! Lisapollison 15:19, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Wow - just read your newest comments to me on my talk page. You are one fascinating individual. I find your accounts incredibly interesting but as someone who is trained to view reports of experiences thru a cultural lens, I can't say one way or another that I agree with your conclusions about what has happened to you. in fact, I would never judge your conclusions. As I mentioned before, a very dear friend of mine believes strongly that he was and is a multiple adbuctee. This guy has held down a normal job, gone to college, had a typical life and has no history of mental illness. Clearly both he and you have experienced things that I have not. I'm bery pleased to have met you and if you ever have a chat room you hang in regularly, let me know.Lisapollison 10:01, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Bishonen and barnstars

No offense, friend, but I think maybe your frequent barnstars on User talk:Bishonen might be coming across as more ‘stalker’ than ‘friendly’. I think they might even add to her stress level. Seventeenth 01:57, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

Did NOT intend to be a "stalker", just being appreciative of her assisstance. Martial Law 02:00, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
I know, you are trying to be nice and that's good. I just noticed you were giving her quite a few barnstars, which isn't how it usually seems to be done here in the wikipedia. Peace out and keep looking to the skies, friend. Seventeenth 02:06, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
Thank you, Seventeenth. And thank you for the barnstars, Martial Law. But you already gave me the Da Vinci barnstar a few days ago, I don't need a new one every time I archive my page. Please stop, as I'd rather just bear in mind your friendly intention with the first one. There's no need for you to respond to the changes of my "wikimood" either. I just change it now and then to something I like the sound of (like "Rain of Frogs"); it's more of a joke, and the level that the moodmeter happens to be at doesn't necessarily mean anything. Altogether, to be quite frank, Seventeenth is right: you've made your point, thank you, and I'd prefer it if you stay off my page from now on. I'll take your appreciation as read. Please don't post about me to other editors either. Thanks. Bishonen | talk 02:19, 7 September 2006 (UTC).
Unless a emergency arises, will comply. See you around. Martial Law 02:24, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

This looks like a good start to an article. However, I'm not sure that information about this magazine is notable enough for inclusion in Wikipedia. It may be a very good magazine, I don't know, but is there anything about it that distinguishes it from the thousands of other magazines being written? Does it have a wide readership? Has it been mentioned in other publications? Do you think the Lost Treasure article would be kept if it went to an AFD? These are all things to think about when writing a new article. Another general piece of advice is to always try to categorize new articles. If you get a chance, try to see if there are any categories into which Lost Treasure would fit. Keep up the good work. Canderson7 (talk) 00:53, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

  1. .Unknown, treasure tales does invoke a sense of adventure, such as finding loot stolen by Jesse James.
  2. It discusses Treasure related material, historic material, as Popular Mechanics discusses tech matters, Self "do-it-yourself" projects.
  3. Unknown. Martial Law 01:01, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Canderson7, imagine that "YOU" had found $40,000,000 in treasure that some famous outlaw had stolen from a train or stagecoach. IF you did, what would you do with it ? Martial Law 01:03, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

I'm an inclusionist myself, but I urge you to consider the subject's notability before writing an article. It may be that Lost Treasure goes to an AfD, in which case we'll be able to see what the community feels. Some of your articles have been deleted in the past, you could go back and look at the discussions, that will give you a sense of the community's past decisions. As for your question, it's a nice thought. Maybe I could start editing Wikipedia full-time :) Canderson7 (talk) 01:10, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Wikiproject Paranormal Collaboration

Hi, I'm leaving you this message because I noticed you are interested in Wikipedia:Wikiproject Paranormal. We're currently starting a new project which we need the help of our members in, the WikiProject Paranormal Collaboration of the Month. This is an initiative where we can identify articles that need work (especially high-traffic pages), and get the whole project involved with their improvement. Currently, we are in the process of voting for our first collaboration. We'd appreciate it if you'd stop by, vote, and add any articles you may think may be appropriate for the project. Also, you may wish to add the Collaboration page to your watchlist to observe future collaborations. If you'd like, we've also created a category to collect articles covered by our project as a reference, if it helps. So, thank you for your interest, and happy editing! --InShaneee 16:01, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

Banned... please

Martial Law, I know how well you mean, but it's time for you to stop posting irrelevant things on the admins' noticeboard, getting asked to not do it, apologizing, and then after a while posting the exact same kind of stuff again. And again. I'm sorry, I don't mean to humilate you, but in the long run it's just more humiliating to keep repeating the cycle. WP:AN and WP:ANI aren't newsites and they're not weatherboards. Many admins have told you this. You are hereby banned from posting on WP:AN and WP:ANI. "Banned" doesn't mean I've blocked you—I wouldn't do that—it means that you're not allowed to post on those pages. Don't post anything on them. Please. The reason I had reported in WP:AN area is that I was hoping to save some lives, concerning the still ongoing tornado outbreak. There were some fatalities, casualties and a lot of damage. Where can I report something like that in the future w/o causing a mess ? One other Question, if I make Admin status, will this ban be terminated ? I'm NOT trying to evade it at all. I did watch it and I saw it with somewhat different eyes of a 37 year old man for when I watched it when I was maybe 8 or 9 years old. I wonder if anyone who is in Miller County in Fouke Arkasas owns a computer and can provide some grounds and foundation on this. Miller County by my last estimate is only 37 miles from north to south. I am not sure on what it is from east to west. I would like to see further depth and background on the people and on the Fouke monster itself.

You seem to be missing the point

You seem to be missing the point with a lot of your recent edits. Here's a summary.

  1. Wikipedia is not news.
  2. Wikipedia's administrator boards are not for RL news reports.
  3. Signpost newsroom is not for RL news reports about weather, UFOs, or ANYTHING.
  4. Talk pages - in reference to this - are NOT for stuff not related to the article.
  5. Articles about phenomena - like tornado - are NOT for current tags when there's an event REGARDING the phenomena. If this was the case tropical cyclone would be tagged Current permanently. Current means that information may change rapidly in an article. The main article DOES NOT CHANGE because of an incident.

I hope I am absolutely clear, because if this trend doesn't change, I think, honestly, please don't harbour too much hope of becoming admin. Unfortunately there isn't much chance anyone - including myself - would even trust you with admin tools if you continued to do this.

Please reply here, but I hope you get the point. – Chacor 01:40, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

Instead of two questions, I now have a few. They are as follows: How do I comply with the link ban w/o any further troubles ? My troublesome ISP may be causing the rotten links. I personally checked a link on WP, then checked it recently, and the link went bad. Talk Page Probation: Can you enlighten me on this ? If I find something interesting, how do I place the info. incl. the source(s) ? This may appear to be a bad question: Why is there a spinning Godzilla figure on your pages ? I am really looking for some mentors to assist me. Do you have any other suggestions for me to follow ? I am only seeking knowledge, compliance, thus is why I am asking questions. Martial Law 09:09, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

OK. I shall take you on as a semi-official mentor (whatever that may mean), perhaps along with User:Armedblowfish. You may ask questions on my page (just ignore any spinning graphics, they are only a bit of fun) but let me start out with some ground rules:
  1. Do not ask the same questions repeatedly
  2. Do not ask about real-world "news" events like hurricanes or other potential disasters and where they should be "reported": they should NOT be reported
  3. Do not ask about Coast-to-Coast AM or any other similar talk-radio sources. Any questions on the topic will have the same answer: it is NOT a Reliable Source and cannot be used as a source of information.
  4. One of the conditions of my mentorship is that you are restricted from adding any external links to articles without running them by me first. Moreover, if you run the same class of unreliable self-published web "sources" by me over and over, I will swiftly lose patience. We only take newspapers, books, journals, and other similar non-self-published sources. —Bunchofgrapes (talk) 23:23, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
  5. I will deal with nonproductive talk-page edits as they come. Remember above all else: the talk page is there to help improve the article, nothing more. Similarly with Wikiproject pages, they are there to help improve a class of articles, NOT for general discussion.
Please read the list above very carefully and ask me if there is anything you do not understand about it. —Bunchofgrapes (talk) 23:23, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Your network

You said that you think your network might be causing the "malformed links". I'm pretty sure the complaints were about the quality of links, not about dead links. Anyways, while it is theoretically possible that bits are changing from ones to zeros, or vice versa, corrupting the data, I think it is more likely that it is not the links themselves that are broken, but rather your network connection to the server hosting the link. In other words, you might have trouble accessing the links at times, but it might be working fine for almost everyone else.

Anyways, I'm sorry you have to deal with a bad internet connection. However, I don't think that is related to the complaints about the external links you have added.

Your interpretation of WP:EL

Okay, question for you - what is your interpretation of Wikipedia:External links? What parts do you think are most important? What do you think is the overall spirit of the guideline? You might consider looking at the talk page to see how the consensus for this guideline was formed. No hurry on answering this - a thoughtful response would be most appreciated. — Armedblowfish (talk|mail) 23:24, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

The following (in italic) was copied from my talk page:
From what I have seen about WP:EL, these are to assist the reader in the search for more info. referenced in a article. Can you please enlighten me if I'm incorrect ? I have noticed on the WP:RS page that there is a debate of some kind going on. Will that affect me, others ? Martial Law 22:55, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
I guess the first important distiction is between references and external links. References, which are required by WP:VERIFY, are the sources one uses when writing an article, or to verify statements already made in the article. WP:RS discusses what should be considered trustworthy, and which ones should not be, and thus should not be used. Sources are most often placed in the "References" section of an article, although other variations include "Notes", "Sources", "Citations", and "Works cited". (Sometimes, they may also be placed inline, without any listing at the end.)
External links, on the other hand, are a form of "Further reading", although by far the most common type. (By this, I don't mean in the technical sense of a link that points to another site, but rather the links that should go in either the "External links" or "Further reading" section of the article.) External links are not used as sources for writing or for verifying the article. Instead, they are links which, although not used as sources, are considered useful for the reader to find further information. In practice, editors may add something to the external links section when they think it might be a useful source, but are either unsure of its reliability, or do not have time for fact-checking.
This misunderstanding is very common. However, last I checked, the distiction between sources and external links/further reading was undisputed on the talk pages WT:RS and WT:EL. (The exception to this is convenience links, which are an issue of their own, but you probably don't have to worry about that.)
As for the debate on WT:RS right now, I haven't been following closely, but I think people mostly disagree on the details of WP:RS, not the overall idea. Not agreeing that well on the details, the dispute is basically over how official the page should be (policy / guideline / essay), and how much it needs to be rewritten (fine as is / somewhat / a lot / start over).
Anyways, I hope that helps. If all of that sounds good, would you like to continue to discuss the quality expectations set out by WP:RS and WP:EL? Or do you have more questions about the above?
Armedblowfish (talk|mail) 01:08, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
The following (in italic) was copied from my talk page, and indentation was modified:
U asked about the discussion about WP:EL and WP:RS. Can we continue the discussion ? By the way, how am I doing ? I have a feeling that I'm a model to be followed ? Hope so. Can I suggest that these discussions be linked to my toolbox for future reference ? Martial Law 17:07, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
Reason I asked is that our Archive devices will bury it at some point. I'm just looking for a way to access it instantly. Martial Law 17:11, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
I don't know about adding it to the toolbox on the left of the page, but it would be quite easy to link to this discussion from your userpage. Before it is archived, you can simply link to User talk:Martial Law#Your_interpretation_of_WP:EL. Afterwards, it will be at User:Martial Law/archive 1#Your_interpretation_of_WP:EL. Alternatively, you could manually (copy-paste) archive it to it's own subpage/archive, e.g. User talk:Martial law/Interpretation of WP:EL or User talk:Martial law/Mentorship archive, which you could link to / watchlist. By the way, I have your talk page watchlisted, so feel free to relpy here.
As for how you are doing, you have been very cooperative, and I thank you for that. I encourage you to tell me, in your own words, about your current interpretation of the guidelines we are discussing though. This will help me understand where you are coming from, and what we should talk about more. Perhaps the process of writing will help you, too. Don't be afraid to be wrong.
So, as I said above, there is a difference between sources and further reading. Perhaps we should talk about WP:VERIFY (WP:V) and WP:RS first. The key idea of WP:V is verifiability, not truth. This means that when adding information to articles, it is not our place to judge what the truth is, but to simply say in our own words what other people say is the truth, citing them. This leads to the question of who/what we can cite, which is should cite WP:RS is about. If some random Joe Shmoe says that the sky is falling, we aren't going to say that the sky is falling, because we don't trust random Joe Shmoes. We aren't even going to say "According to Joe Shmoe, the sky is falling" because Joe Shmoe's opinion doesn't matter, and including it would be giving Joe Shmoe's opinion undue weight.
This is not to say that how extraordinary a claim something is has nothing to do with how reliable a source we need, Exceptional claims require exceptional evidence. However, even if Joe Shmoe were saying something broadly accepted like, "People need to breathe air to survive", we would still be able to find far better sources to back up this claim.
What to look for, then? Good sources should preferably go through some sort of peer-reviewed fact-checking process. For example, the New York Times checks facts against multiple sources before publishing it. We prefer sources from expert authors, writing within their area of expertise. For example, if Professor X has a degree in linguistics, we might accept Professor X's statements on the evolution of the English language, but not Professor X's statements on nuclear weapons.
Sometimes, expert sources will all agree on a statement. In this case, we will consider the statement to be a fact, for the purpose of Wikipedia. Other times, they may not agree, in which case we will consider the statements to be opinions, and WP:NPOV becomes relevant.
The above mostly covers extreme cases - obviously, there is a wide range of possible sources that fall between Joe Shmoe's personal opinion which he put on a blog, and carefully peer-reviewed papers written by accepted experts with degrees. However, I hope I have improved your understanding of WP:RS somewhat. Please let me know about your present understanding of WP:RS.
Armedblowfish (talk|mail) 18:19, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
Really do understand some of it now. When I go after a source, I look for the primary sources listed in the source. Example: BFRO, which is Loren Coleman's site reports a Bigfoot in Fouke
, I look for the sorce of the report, thus I find it was the Texarkana Gazette AND the Arkansas Democrat/Gazette, and if possible, even locate the witness himself/herself. Of course, due to WP:OR, I can't use the witness himself/herself as a source. Martial Law 18:56, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
You're right - the sources listed by a source are one of the relevant factors to it's own reliability. However, it's not the only one - I'm going to suggest reading Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/rewrite, which is part of the WP:RS dispute we talked about earlier. It's completely unofficial, and to be honest I'm heavily involved with it, but it is short and sweet, at least right now. You might also want to read WP:CITE#Say_where_you_got_it, which clarifies that, when using an intermediate source, the credibility of your statement rests on the intermediate source, not the original source. (For example, even if blogger Joe Shmoe does cite the New York Times, we probably don't trust Joe Shmoe to accurately tell us what is in the New York Times. However, we probably do trust the Amazon Online Reader to tell us what is in a book.)
As for primary sources - yes, locating the Texarkana Gazette and the Arkansas Democrat / Gazette would probably be a good idea. (Although I don't know what sort of editorial review processes those gazettes have.) As for the witness him/herself, I'm not sure if you are talking about private communications with that witness, or reading something the witness self-published. Private communications definitely would not be citable, per WP:OR, but something the witness self-published might be debatable. If a witness did self-publish something, under what conditions, if any, do you think it should be acceptable for inclusion in Wikipedia?

Would'nt that (see above this subject line(Re.:Your Interpretation of WP:EL)) violate WP:OR ?. MY ISP is now unstable. Martial Law 05:11, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
WP:OR means that Wikipedia editors may not use Wikipedia as the first place to publish their own ideas. Instead, a source considered to be reliable should publish it first. So, if a reliable source has original research, it would be a primary source, but using it would not necessarily be original research. That said, coming up with new ideas based on primary sources is original research. Since this may be easy to do, there are some editors who think that primary sources should be avoided altogether, but I believe they are a minority. Does this make sense? Pointless posts

Hi ML,

Posts like this one, where you ask about glitches Wikipedia might (or might not) be having, are really pointless and you should avoid them. If Wikipedia has a real problem, many, many people will notice it, including people with the technical knowledge to actually do something about it. If it turns out to simply be a problem on your end, you shouldn't announce that to the world either. Thanks. —Bunchofgrapes (talk) 15:15, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Just for your information (to Martial Law), the problem was probably somewhere between your computer and a DNS server. The DNS server is what tells your computer en.wikipedia.org's IP address, so that your computer will know where to send a page request. Sometimes clearing you browser's cache can help, if your computer is not resending the DNS request when you try to refresh the page. Armedblowfish (talk|mail) 00:41, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
Will comply. Martial Law 04:29, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi ML

You have a great heart and enthusiasm for the project. I found this on bunchofgrapes site which Im sure youve seen before but I think is worth sharing again:

Wikipedia is a research project. If you are going to add new content to a page, please follow these guidelines: If you don't want to do research, but just want to write what you know, or what you think you know, or what sounds good, or how it seems to work in your town, state, or country, STOP. RIGHT. NOW. You will be harming the encyclopedia with your "sharing". Research first. With reliable sources. That means books. If your topic isn't covered in books, that may sometimes be a warning sign that it isn't encyclopedic enough to merit coverage here. If you still believe it is, research with the best sources you can find. Journals. Magazines. Newspapers. Almost never web sites written by some random guy. Mr. random guy probably did as much research as you were going to do, before you read this: none. When adding material to an article, cite the sources the information is from. Don't treat this as an optional step. Trying to retrofit citations later in your own work is hard; trying to do it for some piece of text someone else wrote is basically impossible. You might as well get rid of it all and start from scratch, because the information in sources you find will be just different enough from that in the original sources to make you question the whole enterprise.

ML, I look at what you write here everyday, you are a good soul, but just remember this project is an encyclopaedia and needs hard facts NPOV, its not a blog or news channel. Apart from that keep the flag flying man its good in this world to have people such as you pushing the edges

Hi again ML just started an account, I am Mhicaoidh 21:40, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

the comet was spectacular a few weeks ago, just above the south west horizon, there are some very representative photos on the Wik page. I havent seen it recently due to cloud but its the best Ive seen since Ikeya-Seki in 1965 when I was 5! Mhicaoidh 07:45, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Yes I remember the events surrounding Hale Bopp, it was spectacular in the Northern Hemisphere I hear, but alas, lots less visible down here. You must have quite good night sky viewing conditions where you are in the south west, Ive been to Arizona and remember how bright the stars were out in the desert although there seems to be a lot more aerial activity than we get here! Yes you are using google web accelerator. That software works by diverting your connections through some google proxy servers and therefore there IP address. The block message does point you to the details of this and how to disable the software for when using wikipedia. Follow those instructions rather than posting unblock messages, we will not be unblocking google web accelerator addresses. --pgk 20:48, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Alien sources

Hello. First off, you might want to read WP:Fringe theories. Also, I don't know if you read my reply on my talk page.

Anyways, here are some things I found that may or may not be useful to you:

  • Carey, Benedict (2005-08-09). "Explaining Those Vivid Memories of Martian Kidnappers". Books on Science. The New York Times. p. 2. Retrieved 2007-02-14. cite news: Check date values in: |date= (help)
This is a skeptic explanation of why some people believe they were abducted by aliens. It suggests that, while false, these beliefs ought to be taken as seriously. An explanation called "sleep paralysis" is offered. Not exactly what you were looking for, but it could be helpful.
  • Clancy, Susan A. Abducted: How People Come to Believe They Were Kidnapped by Aliens. United States of America: Harvard University Press. p. 12. ISBN 0-674-01879-6. cite book: Unknown parameter |origdate= ignored (|orig-date= suggested) (help) Also see excerpts from the Amazon Online Reader.
This is the book talked about in the New York Times article above.
  • Strassman, Rick. DMT: The Spirit Molecule: A Doctor's Revolutionary Research into the Biology of Near-Death and Mystical Experiences. Rochester, Vermont: Park Street Press. p. 320. ISBN 0-89281-927-8. cite book: Unknown parameter |origdate= ignored (|orig-date= suggested) (help) Also see excerpts from the Amazon Online Reader.
This book offers a chemical / biological explanation for why people believe they were abducted by aliens. It was suggested by Asdfg12345.
  • Derrick, Natasha (2007-02-09). "Aliens among us: Exhibit asks what life might be like on other planets". The State. Retrieved 2007-02-14.
This discusses a Seatle museum which offers ideas about what life might be like on other planets.

Sorry I cannot seem to find any good secondary sources on mutilation / killing by aliens at the moment, but I hope I have helped some.

Hello Martial Law! I was just looking through your contributions, and I noticed this edit.

Anyways, you are basically right that it is self-explanatory, but further research reveals some more details.

  • Scams that target your personal information are often called "phishing", and often involve filling out forms that look legitimate, but aren't. Wired news, which is a reliable source (with the possible exception of Wired Blog), has a number of articles on the topic. Also see what Google Mail's help centre has to say on the matter, although that isn't as reliable. You might also be interested in Kevin Mitnick, a former black hat hacker who wrote The Art of Deception: Controlling the Human Element of Security.
  • According to Scambusters.org, if you supposedly "win" a contest you didn't enter, you could be asked to pay a lot of fees to get the prize. Scambusters gives a number of examples. I am not sure how reliable scambusters is.
  • Things that compromise your computer are computer viruses. Wired news has an article, Melissa, Spawned by Spam.

Anyways, I am sorry if I just gave you more information than you care to know.

Link may be suspect. It is pro UFO in nature, yet appears to be similar to well known links that passed WP protocol. Martial Law 05:33, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
Link and IP was found in the article's History section. Martial Law 06:29, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

I am glad you corrected the placement.  : ) The link may be biased, but biased links are okay, so long as the External link section is relatively neutral as a whole. See WP:EL#Avoid_undue_weight_on_particular_points_of_view, and WP:NPOV#Undue_weight.

The basic idea is, if the external links section contains biased links, all major points of view should be represented in proportion to their significance.

This might be one of the most difficult aspects of neutrality. There are a variety of ways one might try to determine significance, the top three being the number of people holding the viewpoint, the reliability and number of sources holding the viewpoint, and a consensus of involved editors.

The first, the number of people holding the viewpoint, is unfortunately unknowable. We can only estimate based on the other two methods. However, this estimate will always be imperfect, and in some cases highly skewed. Some cultures, like India and China, are far under-represented in both sources and Wikipedians. See Wikipedia:WikiProject countering systemic bias.

The second, the reliability and number of sources holding the viewpoint, gives preference to English-speaking academics. However, it is a broadly accepted method of determining significance, and can be quite effective. So look consider the link in terms of WP:Attribute, and consider how much their opinion matters.

The third, a consensus of involved editors, is how these things are practically determined anyway. It works better when there are more involved editors, holding a variety of viewpoints. This still has systemic bias, since Wikipedians are not exactly a cross-section of the world's society. But what more can we do?

I hope this helps some. As a disclaimer, this is my own interpretation of WP:NPOV to a certain degree. I hope you will understand, as it is a difficult topic. Let me know if you have any questions! : )

One more thing: the topic of the article affects due weight. So, on an article about UFOs, the opinions about people who believe in UFOs gets more weight than their opinions would in articles about outer space in general. — Armed Blowfish (talk|mail) 04:59, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
In short, I would recommend looking at all of the links for bias, and then trying to balance them out. — Armed Blowfish (talk|mail) 00:26, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

Hey, you still around? Well, I haven't heard from you in, like forever, and thought I might check in. Do you remember me? I think I remember meeting you at some point. I don't remember how we met or anything though (it's probably in your talk page archives... somewhere... ). My siggy probably looked more like this (Nineteenninetyfour back then. What is this "Wikipedia Nuclear Option" thing you say you've found? Drop me a line, alright? See you around. Cheers!!! Ninetywazup?Review meMy ToDosign here! 17:41, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
