He is a Shaykh living in Ottawa, Canada and he is also the founder of Cordova Academy and the Cordova Spiritual Education Center which are organizations dedicated to teaching students numerous Islamic sciences, including Classical Arabic[1] Islamic History, Islamic Law, Sciences of Hadith (Prophetic Sayings), Tajwid (Sciences of pronunciation of the Holy Qur’an), and much more[2] [3] [4] [5].

Having sought knowledge from a very young age, Shaykh Mohamad Jebara is now considered one of the youngest uprising Islamic intellectuals in the Ottawa region, and is considered a master and scholar of the sciences of Classical Arabic and Tajwid[6] [7].

Youth[edit]

Shaykh Mohamad Jebara was enrolled into kindergarten in Lebanon at the age of two and completed grade four at the age of six. He was put out of school for two years due to the severity of the war within the country. However, while enrolled in school, he had excelled in his academics and maintained top ranking marks in his classes[8].

Path to Seeking Islamic Knowledge[edit]

As a youth, Shaykh Mohamad Jebara maintained an interest in studying Islamic knowledge. After a unique experience this urge to study the Islamic sciences became intensified and consequently he acquired his very first teacher at the age of eleven, Imam Abdurrahman Ibrahim Musa, may mercy be upon him. With him, Shaykh Mohamad Jebara studied Tajwid (the science of pronunciation of the Qur’an), Tafsir (explanation of the Qur’an), Islamic Law and Sciences of Hadith[9] [10].

Two years later at the age of 13 Imam Abdurrahman Ibrahim Musa introduced Shaykh Mohamad Jebara to Shaykh Salahuddin Al-Idlibi who was a great Imam living in Montreal, Ottawa. With Imam Salahuddin Al-Idlibi, he studied Arabic Grammar, Islamic Beliefs and Jurisprudence. After this, Shaykh Mohamad Jebara studied under Imam Hamid Slimi, may mercy be upon him [11]. Imam Hamid Slimi is one of Canada’s renowned Islamic scholars, and he is the Chairman of the Canadian Council of Imams[12] [13].

At the age of 16, Shaykh Mohamad Jebara earned an Ijazah in Qur’an (permission/certification to teach) in the narration of Hafs, Warsh and Qalun. In 2005 he traveled to Damascus, Syria to recite to Imam Abdul Razzaq Al-Halabi, who is considered one of the world’s greatest Islamic scholars[14]. Through him, Shaykh Mohamad Jebara received one of the shortest chains in the narration of Hafs that currently exist in the world[15].

In addition to the Qur’an, Imam Mohamad Jebara has also memorized many classical Islamic works, including matn Ajurrumiyya (a poem teaching Classical Arabic Grammar rules), Ash-Shatibiyyah and Al-Jazariyyah (poems teaching the rules of Tajwid)[16] [17] and many more classical texts.

In addition to all of this, Shaykh Mohamad Jebara has also written one of the largest and most meticulous books of Tajwid in the English language. He has currently authored over 70 works[18].

Having begun volunteering at the young age of eleven[19] through tutoring and teaching members in his community, he currently continues his voluntary work today through a number of pathways while continuing to maintain and administer his own institute.

He has designated a specific page on his website to bridge building[20], moreover, he has delivered several speeches to those of other religions related to creating ties in the community despite the differences in faith and creed[21]. Such lectures were also delivered in churches, such as the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa in March of 2010[22] [23]. Shaykh Mohamad Jebara constantly provides free tours of mosques to youth and adults alike, while providing a clarified version of the Islamic belief[24] to a variety of different audiences. He is one of the signatories of the Canadian Council of Imams Declaration, which is a declaration put together to establish peace and tolerance between Muslims and those of other faiths in order to motivate bridge building , understanding and cooperation[25]. Shaykh Mohamad Jebara was also recognized for his volunteer work during the Ottawa Civic Appreciation Awards in May of 2010[26].
