Henry J. Mankin MD is a senior research consultant for the Orthopaedic Oncology Service at Massachusetts General Hospital.Throughout his career, Dr. Henry Mankin has made great contributed to “medical education, basic and clinical research, oncology and residency training,” (http://www2.aaos.org/aaos/archives/acadnews/2004news/a11-3.htm).

Education[edit]

Dr. Henry Mankin was educated at the University of Pittsburgh for his undergrad as well as medical degree. After receiving his MD in 1953, Dr. Mankin went on to complete his internship at the University of Chicago and shortly after serving two years as a physician in the U.S. Navy [2]. After the completion of his tour in the U.S. Navy, Dr. Henry Mankin took his residency in Orthopaedics at the Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City. [3]

Career[edit]

In 1960, Dr. Henry Mankin resided as a faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh Orthopaedic Service and then in 1966 served as the Chief of Orthopaedics Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City. From 1972 to 1996, he resided as the Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery and Orthopeadic Oncology service (1972 – 2000) at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He was also the director Harvard Combined Residency program until 1998. Dr. Mankin's interest in Orthopeadic Oncology led him to establish a Fellowship, that has since "trained over 80 Fellows, [4]

In 1966 while serving as the Chief of Orthopaedics at the Hospital for Joint Diseases Dr. Mankin also held a position as a Professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine (http://www.massgeneral.org/about/newsarticle.aspx?id=2025). Currently Dr. Mankin is the Edith M. Ashley Professor Emeritus of Orthopaedics at Harvard Medical School and a professor at the MGH Institute for Health Professions http://www.massgeneral.org/about/newsarticle.aspx?id=2025.

Research[edit]

Dr. Mankin established the Connective Tissue Oncology Center, an organization with his colleagues in bone radiology, pathology, and radiation, medical and pediatric. Dr. Mankin developed a computer system that stores all the information regarding activities in tumor care. He also created a bone bank to obtain tissue, http://www.gaucherdisease.org/mankin.php.

Through much of clinical and basic research, Dr. Henry Mankin has been able to publish over 600 articles and book chapters. In addition to a published a book "Pathophysiology of Orthopaedic Diseases"
