Merle Hathaway is a freelance arts administrator and curator with a long history of art teaching, primary to tertiary, working as a Community Arts Officer for local government and in public art galleries as a director (Horsham Regional Art Gallery, curator (Dromkeen Children's Literature Collection) and education officer (Art Gallery of Ballarat).

She now works as The Artist's Cat. providing cataloguing, curatorial services and advice for artists and artists' estates. Her current role is assisting The Prahran Legacy project, which will culminate in a major exhibition at MAPh (Museum of Australian Photography), Melbourne in 2025.

In the exciting mood of the 1970s, Prahran College of Advanced Education, with tutors such as John Cato, Paul Cox and Athol Shmith, photography at last became considered an art form.
