User:Meters/Molasses dinosaur vandal

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Notes for possible range block requests or extended page protection requests.

Since at least 2019 mobile IPs from Eastern US (almost all Verizon Business with a tightly-clustered geolocation) have been inserting mentions of dinosaur content in the Molasses article. Typically only one edit is made per IP, and at random intervals up to several months, so individual IP blocks and short term protections would not be effective. A 6-month pending changes block by user:Cwmhiraeth in 2020 kept the vandalism out of the article but did not stop the attempts. As of 16 April 2024 many of the older IPs are covered by an unrelated 6-month /40 range block by user:Johnuniq. It's not likely to be practical to use range blocks for this user since the recent edits not covered by the /40 block would require two more /40 range blocks (on 2600:1001:b0 and 2600:1002:b0), and still wouldn't cover everything. With eight edits in 7 days so far this April (as of 18 April) page protection may be warranted. Protected 3 months to July 18/24

  • 18 April 2024 [46] Body: "It is also used to make dinosaur shaped dog treats." This is the only involved IP who has ever engaged on a talk page [47] and [48], and the subject is slightly different. The IP provided a source for the existence of molasses-flavoured dinosaur-shaped dog treats in the talk page posts, but the Verizon Business mobile IP coming from the same geolocation as the other IPs show that it is the same editor. Self-confirmed to be the same user via participation in user talk page thread[49], where the IP promised to stop the dinosaur edits if we left the molasses-flavoured dinosaur-shaped dog treats edit in. This raises the possibility of a connection between that e-commerce site and the editor.
