From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Metiza is a positive community inspiring and encouraging young women to be their best selves in all their unique, talented, and beautiful glory. For young women, by young women, the platform shares real stories of substance, focused on wellness, culture, authenticity and empowerment. The Seattle-based platform launched in February 2016, offering teens a destination for relatable, real stories of substance [1].

Background[edit]

Young women are often bombarded with unrealistic, skewed content across a myriad of social and online platforms. Studies by both Stanford and the University of Massachusetts found that 70 percent of college women felt worse about themselves after looking at magazines [2]. Recognizing the need for an online platform that instills a sense of confidence and love of authentic self, Selina Petosa founded the Metiza community along with Editor in Chief Paige Bird.

The Name[edit]

The name Metiza, while invented, does have roots in deep meaning. First from the strong position of the word “Me” leading the name, followed by a creative interpretation of the word Metis, which means of “mixed origin or race,” the combination of factors results in a name that is unique, strong and memorable. The name celebrates the “Me” as an individual, and acknowledges we all come from mixed and diverse places.

Content[edit]

Metiza is committed to featuring real teens in an untouched, honest manner and offers a collective of thoughtful and inspiring content where every voice is valued. In order to keep the Metiza voice true and heard, the platform features community-based contributions in addition to expert pieces, enabling young women to express themselves, and share their own stories [1] [3].

The platform features articles focused on:[edit]
  • Relationships
  • Wellness: Spirituality, Gender/Sexual Identity, Your Beautiful Mind, Your Beautiful Body, Nutrition
  • Education & Tech
  • Diversions: Art, Film, Books, Food
  • Culture & News
