*The new structure will research, define, explore, and expand the intersection between the missions of higher education and Wikipedia.

  • The new structure will have a keen focus on promoting, defining, researching and supporting the best practices of teaching with Wikipedia in higher education, and will recruit and support faculty integrating Wikimedia projects into course curricula.
  • The new structure will support assessment of student learning activities to continuously evolve effectiveness of Wikipedia projects within the curricula.
  • The new structure will support teaching with Wikipedia to improve and expand Wikipedia content and editor participation, and promote free knowledge and information fluency.
  • The new structure will serve to facilitate efficiencies and productivity between the WM community and the academic community which increase opportunities for greater use of WM projects in education.
  • The new structure will serve to elevate the "image" of WM within academia.
  • The new structure (Wikieduca?), will help disciplines understand the value of Wikipedia in representing a public understanding of their knowledge.
  • The new structure will support efforts to encourage research/expert faculty to become active Wikipedia editors, improving and expanding the quality of content available to the general public.
  • The new structure will research and be active in educational trends related to Wikipedia in the classroom (e.g., teaching and learning trends).
  • The new structure will expand book shelf materials -- items that facilitate instructors' use of Wikipedia within the context of teaching and learning goals.
  • The new structure will help professors develop courses within traditional academic institutions which feature Wikipedia contribution units, or study Wikipedia and its cultures as a course focus in New Media, Computer Science, Communications, etc.


ACTION ITEM:

This task force must create a proposal to place on the proposal dashboard which creates the following desired effect (focus on phase II activities)

DESIRED EFFECT: By November 30, 2012 there is a list of considerations related to how the new structure will function with regards to all academia-related matters. By 11/30/12, there is also a clear plan for engaging key and influential faculty in Phase II and III matters that are directly related to teaching and learning (e.g., staffing, needs assessment, etc.).
