Best practice for writing German military articles

[edit]

The past experience here on Wikipedia has showed that any editor writing German military articles, this includes either biographies, military equipment such as aircraft, naval vessels or military units, is exposed to German culture as well as German references. This diverse exposure poses challenges on how to best present the content in accordance to Wikipedia:Manual of Style without losing the semantic correctness which can be lost in translation. The goal of this "best practices" article is to collect the experience of editors who have taken one or many German military related articles through the various review processes here on Wikipedia.

Article lead

[edit]

The lead of an article should be free from German language.

Military ranks

[edit]

Military units

[edit]

The German military often uses Arabic numerals as well as Roman numerals to distinguish between the different units, sub-units and organization levels of their respective military branch. A footnote should be used to explain this distinction.

Translations

[edit]

In some instances it may be practical to break out specific translations into a dedicated translation foot note. An example of this practice can be found on Ernst Lindemann and Werner Hartenstein article.

Umlaute

[edit]

Umlaute should be avoided as much as possible. An exception to this rule is the names of individuals. An explanatory footnote should be added to explain the reasoning and potential representation in the English language.

Heinz Schnaufer victory claims

[edit]

This and the ♠ (Ace of spades) indicates those aerial victories which made Schnaufer an ace in a day, a term which designates a fighter pilot who has shot down five or more airplanes in a single day.
This along with the + (plus) indicates almost certain identification.
This along with the * (asterisk) indicates probable identification.
This along with the ? (question mark) indicates possible identification.
