The September 11 attacks (also known as September 11th or 9/11, pronounced "nine eleven") were a series of coordinated suicide attacks upon the United States by al-Quaeda on September 11, 2001. 19 terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners, two of which were intentionally crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, and one of which was crashed into The Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, near Washington, D.C. The fourth flight was flown into the ground when the hijackers realized that passengers and crew might regain control of the plane, in a remote area near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Actual targets are thought to have been the White House or U.S. Capitol Building.
Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks. 2,752 died in the attack on the World Trade Center, and another 184 at The Pentagon. The New York State Department of Health claims that 836 responders have died as of June 2009. At least one secondary death also occurred, as a medical examiner ruled that one patient's lung disease, which caused their death, was due to exposure to dust from the rubble after the collapse of the Twin Towers.
Much was taken into consideration after the attacks. Other than launching the War on Terror, in an effort to depose the Taliban, the United States also enacted the USA PATRIOT Act. Many stock exchanges in the United States closed, and many countries strengthened their anti-terrorism legislation. Destruction of billions of dollars worth of space greatly damaged the economy of Lower Manhattan.
The Pentagon was repaired within a year, and rebuilding of the World Trade Center has begun. The Pentagon Memorial is adjacent to the building, and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum will be part of the new World Trade Center. Upon completion, One World Trade Center is expected to be the tallest building in North America, and four other buildings are also under construction. The first phase of construction of the Flight 93 National Memorial is scheduled to be completed by the tenth anniversary of the attacks on September 11, 2011.
