Aquiles is a cargo and troop transport ship of the Chilean Navy, designed to operate for long periods of time without support. She was built by the ASMAR shipyard, launched in 1987 and commissioned in 1988. She has carried out support missions throughout Chilean territory, and has participated in the Chilean Antarctic Campaigns.
Construction[edit]
Aquiles was ordered by the Chilean Navy on 4 October 1985,[1] with the purpose of replacing the ship of the same name that had been acquired in 1968 from Denmark and fulfilled the same function of transporting cargo and passengers.[2][3] This new ship, with greater capacities than the previous one,[3] was designed by Cleaver and Walkingshaw Lid. (now Vard Marine Inc.), and computer-aided systems were used in its construction.[4]
