Quetta has a continental, arid climate with a significant variation between summer and winter temperatures. Summer starts in late May and goes on until early September with average temperatures ranging from 24-26°C (75-78°F).The highest temperature in Quetta is 42 °C (108 °F) which was recorded on 10th July, 1998.[1] Autumn starts in late September and continues until mid-November with average temperatures in the 12-18°C (55-65°F) range. Winter starts in late November and ends in late March, with average temperatures near 4-5°C (39-41°F).The lowest temperature in Quetta is −18.3 °C (−0.9 °F) which was recorded on 8th January, 1970.[2] Spring starts in early April and ends in late May, with average temperatures close to 15°C (60°F). Unlike most of Pakistan, Quetta does not have a monsoon season of sustained, heavy rainfall. Highest rainfall during 24 hours in Quetta is 102 millimetres (4.0 in) recorded on 3rd August, 1983.[3], Highest monthly rainfall is 232.4 millimetres (9.15 in) which was recorded in March, 1982.[4] and the highest annual rainfall is 949.8 millimetres (37.39 in) recorded in 1982.[5] In the winter snow is the principle mode of precipitation with snow falling mostly in the months of December, January and February.

The following is the monthly breakup of the weather in Quetta.
January[edit]
January is the coldest month of Quetta. In January the weather of Quetta is very cold. Western Disturbance has a great influence in the winter of the city it produces rains with the chances of snowfall in the city. The highest temperature is 23.6 °C (74.5 °F) recorded on 28 January, 1987 and lowest temperature is −18.3 °C (−0.9 °F) recorded on 8 January, 1970.[8] While the heaviest rainfall for this month is 178 millimetres (7.0 in) in 1982.[9]

The weather of Quetta in February is similar to that of January. The weather remains cold and Western Disturbance cause rains just like in January with the chances of snowfall in the city. The highest temperature ever recorded was 26.6 °C (79.9 °F) on 16 February, 2002 and lowest temperature is −16.7 °C (1.9 °F) on 1 February, 1970.[10] While the highest rainfall is 189.2 millimetres (7.45 in) in 1982.[11]

In the month of March the weather remains cold but in the end of the month it becomes mild. The Western Disturbance has a effect on the weather, producing hailstorms, and causes rains with strong winds with the chances of snowfall on mountains around the city and in the city as on the morning of 7 March, 2007 the dusting of snow occurred for half an hour. The highest temperature for the month of March is 31 °C (88 °F) on 8 March 2004 and the lowest is −8.3 °C (17.1 °F) on 12 March, 1973.[12] The highest rainfall for march is 232.4 millimetres (9.15 in) in 1982.[13]

The weather pattern of Quetta in April is identical to that of March. The weather pleasant in this month, the highest temperature recorded is 35 °C (95 °F) on 27 April, 1979 and lowest temperature is −3.9 °C (25.0 °F) on 2 April 1965.[14]. While the highest rainfall is 158.7 millimetres (6.25 in) recorded in 1992.[15]

In May the weather gets hot in the city. The highest temperature is 39.4 °C (102.9 °F) on 11 May, 2000 and the lowest is −0.3 °C (31.5 °F) on 3rd May, 1989.[16] Humidity gets extremely low in May as compared to other months. The highest rainfall is 39.9 millimetres (1.57 in) in 1963.[17]
June[edit]
June is the hottest month of Quetta. Temperatures in this month reach up to 40 °C (104 °F) the highest of 41.5 °C (106.7 °F) was recorded on 4 June, 2005 and the lowest temperature is 6 °C (43 °F) recorded on 14 June, 1979.[18] The highest rainfall for the month of June is 61 millimetres (2.4 in) in 2007.[19]

July is the hot month for Quetta as well as for whole Pakistan that continues till September. The highest temperature in this month is 42 °C (108 °F) recorded on 10 July, 1998 and lowest temperature is 10.6 °C (51.1 °F) on 11 July, 1977.[20] and the highest rainfall for this month is 121.8 millimetres (4.80 in) in 1978.[21]

August is also the hot month for Quetta like July. The highest temperature is 40.6 °C (105.1 °F) on 9 August 1970 (1987) and the lowest temperature is 3.9 °C (39.0 °F) on 29 August, 1972.[22] While the highest rainfall for this month is 121.8 millimetres (4.80 in) in 1978.[23]

In the month of September the weather remains mild and gets colder from the last week of the month. It is the driest month for the city. The highest temperature is 38.3 °C (100.9 °F) on 1 September, 1970 and lowest is −0.6 °C (30.9 °F) on 30 September, 1962.[24] The highest rainfall in this month is 62 millimetres (2.4 in) in 1994.[25]

October is the driest month in the city like Septembe. The highest rainfall for this month is 68.8 millimetres (2.71 in) in 1982.[26] The highest temperature and lowest temperature are 34 °C (93 °F) on 1 October, 1998 and −6.7 °C (19.9 °F) on 27 October, 1964 respectively.[27]

Winter begins with the month of November. The western disturbance causes rain with the chances of snowfall over the mountains. The highest rainfall for this month is 72 millimetres (2.8 in) in 2006.[28] and the highest and lowest temperature is 36 °C (97 °F) on 3 November, 1998 and −13.3 °C (8.1 °F) on 30 November, 1964.[29] respectively.

The month of December is very cold for the city. Western Disturbance cause rain in this month with the chances of snowfall. The highest rainfall for this month is 162 millimetres (6.4 in) in 1982.[30] The lowest temperature and highest temperature is −16.7 °C (1.9 °F) on 12 December, 1964 and 25 °C (77 °F) on 14 December, 1970 respectively.[31]
Severe cold waves in Quetta[edit]
Annual Rainfall of Quetta[edit]
The average rainfall of Quetta is 212.9 millimetres (8.38 in).[32] The city mainly recieves its rainfall during the winter monsoon season from west, which starts from the month of November till the end March. The city saw droughts in the year 2000, and 2001. During these years the city didn't received snowfall and got below normal rains. While in 2003 the city received snowfall after a long period of five years. In 2004, and 2005 it received normal rains with snowfall while in 2006, 2007 and 2009 the city doesn't revived any snow, except 2008 when Quetta revived snow for two times on 29 January and on 2 February, they were the heaviest snowfall for the city for the last ten years. During the winter of 2010 it doesn't received snowfall land saw below normal rains due to the presence of El-Nino over Pakistan.[33]
The following is the Annual rainfall in Quetta since 2006 based on the data from Pakistan Meteorological Department.[34]
- In 2007, a total of 284 millimetres (11.2 in) rain was recorded.[35]
- In 2008, a total of 138 millimetres (5.4 in) rain was recorded.[36]
- In 2009, a total of 320.4 millimetres (12.61 in) was recorded.[37]
- In 2010, a total of 98 millimetres (3.9 in) was recorded as of 15 September, 2010.[38]
