My contributions[edit]

Aside from general contributions as stated above I have also created the following articles:

Barnstars[edit]

Nothing to see here.

My stance on archive.org magazine scans as references[edit]

I believe that linking to scanned defunct magazines as references within Wikipedia articles does not violate copyright as such and will continue to add these references wherever relevant. If another editor chooses to replace any of my references with standard magazine citations then so be it - I will leave it be at that point and will not engage in an Edit war. I will provide enough information in the archive.org reference so that if the scans are removed, it can be replaced with a standard magazine citation.

The argument against[edit]

Referencing copyrighted sources is against Wikipedia policy WP:COPYVIOL and these magazines are not yet in the public domain.

My argument for[edit]

Despite potentially being a copyright violation, specifically Contributory copyright infringement, I believe that Fair use applies due to the magazines being defunct, no longer for sale and unable to generate income for the copyright holder.

I choose to WP:Ignore for the above reasons plus:

  • Generally it prevents me from improving Wikipedia
  • Archive.org is a library as stated in the Internet Archive Wikipedia article, and the fact that it is part of the American Library Association, meaning they are granted provisions that make them exempt from certain aspects of copyright law.
  • Such references/sources allow for any editor to verify claims in articles without having to track down and purchase a 20 year old magazine.
  • Such references/sources allow readers to dig deeper into the subject of the article with one click, again rather than tracking down and purchasing a physical copy.
  • I believe that this policy is in place more so to protect commercial book rights than out of print magazines that are hard to come by.
