From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Husky Superior Refinery is located in Superior, Wisconsin, and is the only oil refinery in the state.[1] The plant is connected to the Enbridge Pipeline System, and processes light and heavy crude oil for Husky Energy.[2] The refinery has the capacity to produce about 50,000 barrels of crude oil per day and employees about 180 people.[3]

The refinery was built in 1950 and was operated by Murphy Oil until 2011 when it sold the refinery to Indianapolis-based Calumet Specialty Products Partners in 2011.[3] On August 14, 2017, Husky Energy announced plans to purchase the refinery from Calumet for $435 million.[4][5] The deal was closed on November 10, 2017.[3]

April 2018 explosion[edit]

On April 26, at about 10am central time, an explosion occured, igniting stored asphalt.[1]. By 11:20am, the fire was reported to be extinguished,[6] but the fire reignited shortly after noon causing a wave a 7 or 8 more explosions.[1] The number of injuries initally reported ranged from 11[6][7] to 20[1][8]. The relatively small number of injuries sustained has been attributed to the fact that most of the workers were on break in blast-proof shelters at the time of the first explosion.[1] The ensuing black smoke required an evacuation within a 3 mile radius of the plant, and up to 10 miles downwind.[9]
