Creator of “Makeup By Mario”.[edit]

Mario Dedivanovic is an acclaimed makeup artist.[1] He is responsible for numerous trends that have been popularized over the past decade. He was born to an immigrant family in the Bronx, New York. Before Mario became a makeup artist or created his brand, "Makeup By Mario," he worked as a fragrance consultant at Sephora located in the Flatiron District.[2] Mario hosted "The MasterClass" which started in 2009, a professional artistry program to mentor growing artists. [3][4] Mario has been a makeup artist since the early 2000s, and is now Chief Executive Officer and Chief Creative Officer of his brand, "Makeup By Mario." In 2020, his makeup brush won an "Allure Best of Beauty" award,[5] then launched his Soft Sculpt® Collection.[6] In 2023, MBM won another "Allure Best of Beauty" award for his SurrealSkin foundation.[7]

Mario, an Ambassador for Anastasia Beverly Hills (ABH) Cosmetics[8], was also featured in "Glam Masters."[9] He has worked for many Hollywood celebrities besides his most well-known job as Kim Kardashian's personal makeup artist. Some of those celebrities include Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez. Mario's net worth is around the sum of $15 Million as of 2022[10], and his salary is estimated at around $61,000[11]. His personal career however, as well as his partnerships with "Covergirl," "Marc Jacobs," and "Laura Mercier," earns him up to around $18,000 per Instagram post on @makeupbymario[12]

Mario says that he has "one simple goal" when it comes to his makeup line: "To let people achieve those campaign looks at home, but better. And to educate."[13] Dedivanovic launched his brand precisely 20 years after he had his job as a fragrance consultant in Sephora.[14][15] When 'Makeup By Mario' launched in Sephora, it was only available in the UK but this also created a larger demographic for Dedivanovic. Mario speaks on how as early as his teenage years, he has always had a clear goal and vision for his brand.

Relationships[edit]

Kim Kardashian West and Mario Dedivanovic have made it known that their relationship goes deeper than that of clientele.[16] West and Dedivanovic have been working together since 2008,[17] and have been ever since he was hired to be her makeup artist for the cover of "Social Life Magazine."[18] Mario also helped Kim Kardashian launch KKW Beauty.[19]

Mario was also a guest in one of James Charles' YouTube videos, and he discusses how he had a negative experience while doing another man's makeup, then vowed to never try again.[20] Dedivanovic was very serious about that statement, and James Charles has been the only man to have the artist do his makeup since.[21]

Brand History[edit]

Makeup By Mario was Mario Dedivanovics dream. It took his years of experience, internet fame, and money from his own personal bank account to create his self-funded cosmetics brand. [22] October 1st of 2020 was the launch date for Mario's makeup brand. [23] His makeup line launched with 21 different products and tools that included: makeup brushes, eyeshadow pallets, and different highlighters created to "flatter any and all skin tones." [24] An item that had stood out during the brands debut was the Master Pigment Pro Pencils. Mario created this specific pencil to make eyeliner easier to work with and stated that he would create new content and tutorials for his social media on how to use the new pencil. [25] The Master Mattes was the first product that Mario started on in 2017. Mario researched different pigments and amounts in different skin tones to find the right shades to create for the palette, while also being subtle. [26]

The "MAKEUP BY MARIO" website makes multiple claims about Mario Dedivanovic such as being "one of the most acclaimed, followed, and influential makeup artists in the world" and that he has "forever altered the beauty landscape."[27] In 2009, Mario launched The Masterclass which became a "global phenomenon."[28] His education platform welcomed over 25,000 students to cities across parts of the world.[29] Dedivanovic now serves as Chief Executive Officer and Chief Creative Officer for "MAKEUP BY MARIO" cosmetics. His cosmetic brand is now "available worldwide in over 2,000 points of distribution."[30]

Published on January 19th, 2023, "MAKEUP BY MARIO lands $40 million minority investment"[31] states that Mario Dedivanovics cosmetic brand secured a $40 million minority investment from "Provenance and Silas Capital", which valued Marios brand net worth at over $200 million dollars. The investment would be used to hire 20 new employees which would include a head of sales and an expanded field team. The funding from this investment was needed to overcome inventory challenges. Mario states that the brand had been self funded before the investment. The brand has doubled in sales each year and is expecting to have at least $100 million revenue. [32]

Lawsuits[edit]

A class action lawsuit was filed against "MAKEUP BY MARIO" with claims that the brand has been capturing consumers' biometric facial scans without consent.[33] The "MAKEUP BY MARIO" website features a "Virtual Try-On' feature and there were claims that the brand had breached BIPA by "failing to provide guidelines as to how long users'' biometric data will be stored." There was no public policy stating if or how long information would be stored or destroyed (required by law). The lawsuit represents anyone who resides in the state of Illinois whos biometric data was collected by "MAKEUP BY MARIO"'s virtual try on tool. The "aggregate amount in controversy" for this case was over $5,000,000; exclusive of costs and interest. The website did not inform the user how their face geometry was retained. Plaintiff and Class members were entitled to $1,000 per negligent violation, and $5,000 per willful or reckless violation. [33]
