The Caribbean Maritime Institute (commonly referred to as Caribbean Maritime, or CMI) is a dynamic ISO 9001:2008 certified public institution and the Region's Centre of Excellence for tertiary education, training, applied research and consultancy in maritime, logistics, and engineering. Its primary campus is located in Palisadoes Park, overlooking the Kingston Harbour, the seventh-largest natural harbour in the world.
History
[edit]The CMI was established in Kingston, Jamaica in 1980 as the Jamaica Maritime Training Institute (JMTI). This initiative was a joint project between the Government of Jamaica and the Government of the Kingdom of Norway (NORAD). The Institute started with thirty (30) Jamaican students enrolled in the Merchant Certificate Class III, as deck and engineering officers. Training was designed in accordance with the Norwegian and British systems of training of seafarers, and was well above the minimum requirements of the 1978 Inter-governmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO), (later known as the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Convention for Seafarers.) In 1993 the organization became an autonomous body under the laws of Jamaica and within the Ministry of Public Utilities and Transport. This was in accordance with the JMI Act of 1992. the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ) and the Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) became legal partners of the Institute.
In 2001, the need for giving the Institute its present international flavour, content, size and structure was demonstrated by changing its name from Jamaica Maritime Institute to the Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI). To be consistent with the name change, the CMI has since established satellites in other Caribbean countries for the dissemination and delivery of its programmes.
Programmes

The engineering portfolio consists of three programmes offerings: Masters of industrial Systems Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) Industrial Systems Associate of Applied Science Degree (AASc.) in Industrial Systems Operations and Maintenance
The degree programmes are designed to produce a well-rounded graduate with the engineering knowledge and skills, combined with management education that will adequately prepare him/her for contributing towards the process of technical implementation and innovation within the manufacturing industry.
Philosophy
[edit]It was incorporated in 1980, and is guided by the blue ocean philosophy. The Institute is proactive in identifying the needs of the market (locally and internationally) and expands its programme offerings to respond to market changes. CMI, because of the relevance of its programmes, is the only institution, appropriately positioned to prepare Jamaica for a logistics centred economy. Research and Development are valued by the Institute and this is based on innovation, safety, discipline and environmental preservation. CMI is internationally recognized for quality assurance by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), International Standards Organization (ISO) and has been awarded the Geneva ERA International Gold Award for quality. It has also received multiple accreditation, resulting in the fulfillment of its mandate to provide globally current certification and increased employability of its graduates.
