Professor David Maloma Akinnusi was born on the 6th of January 1947 to the late Chief Olagbegi Adegbayemu George Akinnusi and the late Chief (Mrs) Orisapeji Victoria Akinnusi in Idepe, Okitipupa, Ondo State, Nigeria. He was the second child and first son in a family of four children.
Education[edit]
He started his primary education at Saint Paul’s Primary School, Okitipupa from 1952 to 1958 and then proceeded to Saint John’s Modern School, Idepe in 1959. Thereafter, he started at Stella Maris College Okitipupa in 1961 where he obtained a First Division in the West African School Certificate. He was the School’s first Senior Prefect and Headboy for three years as he was part of the pioneer set in the school.
After completing his West African School Certificate with a Division one, he proceeded to Lagos where he attended King’s College from 1967 to 1968 and obtained a Higher School Certificate.
His tertiary education started at the University of Ibadan in 1969 where he pursued a BSc Honours in Social Science under a Western State Government Sponsorship graduating in 1972 with a Second Class Upper Division.
His professional career spanned over 47 years starting as an Administrative Manager at Mandillas Group Limited and then as a Faculty Officer at the University of Lagos. After completing a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) he started his academic career at the Continuing Education Centre, University of Lagos. It was during this period that, together with his family, he left Nigeria for the Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland in the United States of America under a full sponsorship from the University of Lagos to pursue a PhD in Industrial Psychology that he obtained in 1982.

Upon completing his PhD, he returned to Nigeria and continued at the University of Lagos where he was promoted to Senior Lecturer at the Department of Industrial Relations and Personal Management.
Once again in 1991, he left Nigeria for eSwatini Kingdom (former Swaziland), where he was a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Commerce, University of Swaziland until 1995 when he moved to South Africa as Senior Lecturer and Head of Department, Industrial Psychology in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, University of Fort Hare in the Eastern Cape Province. He became a Professor and Head of Department of the Department of Human Resources and Labour Relations at the University of Venda in Limpopo Province.
In subsequent years, he worked at the North-West University in North-West Province, Al Baha University in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Covenant University in Otta, Ogun State, Nigeria.
Professor David Maloma Akinnusi has supervised more than 200 dissertations consisting of Bachelors, Honours, MBA thesis, Masters Dissertations and PhDs. He has published over 50 papers and was also an External Examiner forvarious universities within and outside South Africa. He served as member of several national and international editorial boards as well as reviewer for many international journals. Wherever he worked, he left behind an indelible marks for hard work, professionalism, creativity and innovation in all the core functions of an academic, research and outreach activities.
Retirement and death[edit]
In 2019, Professor Akinnusi decided to retire after a fruitful and long career in the academic space. However, not one to remain stagnant, he started a bachelor’s degree in law at the University of South Africa (UNISA) in 2020 which he was due to complete in 2022.
He had a passion for investing in the lives of everyone around him and did not hesitate to assist in any way he could whether big or small. In pursuit of academic excellence, socio-economic transformation of his immediateand external family, and those that he met along his journey on this earth, his cornerstone was academics.
This he did without favour and partiality by investing financially, nurturing, advising and following up with each individual post their accomplishment. His advice to all and sundry that came across him was that of knowledge that has made a great impact in their lives.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Mrs Grace Modupe Akinnusi, children, many grandchildren, sister and brother.
