Kirby has a quixotic and mercurial attitude to his own output.
He regularly destroying old releases or makes them abruptly unavailable, but also expresses contempt for scalpers reselling rare releases at high prices.
He speaks about the difficulty of surviving as an independent artist, raising concerns about making work outside the system, but also takes pleasure in alienating previous generations of fans - resisting pressure to stay in a certain genre, and invigorated by drastic changes in direction.
He releases large amounts of music as free downloads, but also raises concerns about how streaming has ended the era where fans understood the importance of supporting artists directly.
He is persistently concerned with regaining control over his works - when they are distributed and how - but also built his reputation on remixing others music without permission.
