Balls By Picasso

[edit]

Balls By Picasso is the English Literary and Debating Society of the National Institute of Technology, Trichy. Balls By Picasso is one of the most elite ( In contrast to Elitist ) societies in the NIT-Trichy. Members are drawn from all parts of the student community, from second years, to Final years.Unlike other clubs, the informal nature and atmosphere of this group, coupled with the unorthodox name,Balls, as it is fondly referred to, is an informal group of people who are interested in Literary events and Debating. Some of the events are Quizzing, Word games, Dumb Charades, Pictionary, JAM or Just A Minute, etc.

The logo of Balls consists of three cubes, arranged in a triangular fashion. The three cubes are allusions to Picasso's Cubism Movement.

Balls members also set and conduct Literary events during various College Festivals like NITTFest and Festember. Along with this, several events are held during various Engineering Symposia conducted by various Engineering Departments in the NIT-Trichy. Once a semester, a Litweek , an open event for students of NIT-Trichy, is held. Various events like a quiz, crossie, Dumb Charades etc are held.

Members of Balls are usually experts in various events like Quizzing, or Word Games, while some prefer events like Pixie and Dumb Charades. Entry into Balls is solely by invitation, usually extended by the Final Year members of the Society. Needless to say, Membership in Balls is the highlight of many students stay in NIT-Trichy.

The Balls Logo, consists of three cubes, two on the base and one above. The three cubes are 'Balls' as envisioned by Pablo Picasso, the foremost exponent of the Cubism Movement.

Etymology of the Name

[edit]

How the English Literary and Debating Society of NIT-Trichy was renamed Balls By Picasso is an interesting Story.

Rachit Ohri, a member of the Literary Society, arrived fifty minutes late for a one-hour free hand drawing competition at CECRI '96. Having only ten minutes left, he drew the now-famous Three cubes in a sketch titled " Balls By Picasso". The cubes were a play on Picasso's cubism movement. Unexpectedly, he won the first prize for the event. Enthused by this, and as a tribute to the artist and his originality, the Members of the English Literary and Debating Society proceeded to rename themselves as "Balls By Picasso".

Composition of the group

[edit]

Members of Balls are primarily from the Third and Final Year students of NIT-Trichy. New members, if any, are chosen from the Second Years, towards the end of the even semester.Inductees, are decided upon by the final years.New members when inducted are usually conferred a nickname which usually stick on for the rest of their stay in college. Subsequently, additional members may be inducted at any time during the academic year. Final Years are never inducted, as there is an unwritten rule against inducting your own Batchmates.

Activities

[edit]

The main activity of the group is to make their way to one of the numerous watering Holes in the city of Trichy and enjoy a few drinks in the company of each other. The traditional venue for the informal get togethers is the Chola Bar in The Meridian Bar and restaurant. Of late though, The Ashby Bar has taken precedence. The Meridian Bar however, remains a favorite.

Apart from such bacchanalian pursuits, The Lone Wolf Quiz at Festember, the NITTFEST English Lits competitions and other such events are all conducted by Balls. The Quizzes are mainly held at night and usually begin at around ten PM or so. They continue late into the night.
