User:Nomader/DC Mayor Race

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I've decided that I'm going to try to update all of the DC Mayoral candidates (partially because I want good coverage, and possibly because it will probably decide to help me who to vote for). Below are sources I've compiled for the purpose of this. All sources are WaPo unless otherwise noted.

1998 Race

[edit]

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/local/longterm/library/dcelections/candidates/williams0710.htm: Teachers Union Endorses Williams, by Vanessa Williams, July 10, 1998.

  • Summary: Evans felt that "Williams nor Chavous deserved the teachers union endorsement" of the teachers union because they failed to successfully "exercise diligent oversight of the school system, which ran a $62 million deficit". Wanted change to the city charter from congress to give the mayor power to hire and fire school superintendent.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/local/longterm/library/dcelections/candidates/williams0807.htm: 'Mr. Bow Tie' Becomes the Bull's-Eye, by Michael Powell, August 7, 1998.

  • Summary: "Williams campaign rallied enough supporters to block an expected Ward 2 endorsement for Evans. Evans had the "mercedes-benz" of campaigns, but his mechanical stump style was a negative. Called a news conference to warn voters not to be swept up by the celebrity of a "carpetbagger"
