Dark Ghetto: Dilemmas of Social Power was released in 1965 by Dr. Kenneth B. Clark and then rereleased in 1989 with an introduction by William Julius Wilson. The book focuses on the repercussions of racial segregation of Harlem in the 1960’s. Utilizing his personal experience and testimonies from a variety of individuals living in Harlem, Dr. Kenneth B. Clark emphasizes the repercussions of white supremacy as it effects urban city schools, the social, economic and political experiences of African-Americans caught in a cycle of poverty. The author includes his own experiences being an ‘involved observer’ as someone who possesses the affluence leave and come back to his neighborhood by choice. ‘Negroes alone cannot abolish the ghetto. It will never be ended as long as the white society believes that it needs it’ (225).
