I am uploading some pics of Shey Palace, you may them if you like.

--Redtigerxyz Talk 06:21, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Nice one. Thanks to both of you. I've nominated it. I'll credit you too Redtiger as you contributed those images. Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:40, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

I've also uploaded some new images to the commons. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:09, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Well spotted, I fixed the double paragraph. No I like the different angles of the statue, I think they look fin! I think people can figure it out and will think it looks OK. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:47, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

I am planning to expand Thikse on User:Redtigerxyz/Shanti Stupa. Feel free to join in. --Redtigerxyz Talk 12:41, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
Note for you on DYk nomination page at Ratha Saptami entry. --Redtigerxyz Talk 13:37, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
I noticed one seem to be a little confused about the pages filed in {{cite book}}. It denotes NOT the total pages of the book, but it refers to the pages (in multitude) referenced, when a single page is referenced, the field page is used. Page gives p., pages gives pp. in the final visible ref. Are you done with your User:Redtigerxyz/Shanti Stupa so I can move the article to mainspace when I am done, possibly today. --Redtigerxyz Talk 04:07, 5 December 2009 (UTC)
I am reducing the information about the nuns movement as it not central to Tikshe. Only nuns association with tikse needs to be notable, other info is WP:UNDUE there IMO. --Redtigerxyz Talk 05:26, 5 December 2009 (UTC)
I am moving the article to mainspace, but will add some info later that has not been covered. --Redtigerxyz Talk 06:44, 5 December 2009 (UTC)
Already done. DYK nominated. Please check the DYK nom. --Redtigerxyz Talk 06:54, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

I have a request. It is a heritage hotel in Rajasthan. has an interesting history.. When are you returning to India? Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:32, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

Happy travels then! Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:10, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Rizong Monastery

[edit]

Hello! Your submission of Rizong Monastery at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Calmer Waters 22:04, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

Hokay. Can you also add some location detail to Thikse Monastery. In the visitor info section it doesn't say much about where it actually is, the valley, the rivers near it and villages and district etc. I've uploaded some images in the valley context. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:50, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

Three's a crowd I think working on an article. If you need any help with anything let me know, I find Redtiger way too fussy to work with. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:02, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

Samode Palace would be awesome. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:24, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

Ah, one thing when you upload commons images you need to cateogrize them!! Just writing Palaces in Rajasthan at the bottom diesn't work! You need to add Category:Palaces in Rajasthan!! DOn't worry I'll organize the Samode images into one cat but please remember when you upload again to categorize them!! Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:28, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

Do you follow? Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:31, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

I've sorted that out and organized them in the commons. Hawa Mahal and City Palace, Jaipur are also in desperate need of expansion. Whatever of the three you feel like doing first! Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:40, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

Free images. I'll upload Samode bathroom image!. Mmm maybe you could kindly ask to use this image for wikipedia? Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:49, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

OK nice work, I'll copyedit it this afternoon. I'm a little tied with developing Tibet/Sichuan at the moment. Why don't you create a "to do list" on your user page. A list of articles you intend to develop/create? Dr. Blofeld White cat 11:53, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

Wow you move quickly. Sorry I couldn't edit yesterday I was busy. I'll read the two of them now. Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:31, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

I'm a bit confused. User:Nvvchar/Sandbox 5. You say it was completed 400 years before? 15th or 19th century in infobox?? Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:53, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

Excellent, you're doing well. I'll look at your next article shortly. Are you still up for the Kathmandu article? The article could be greatly improved, focusing more on the city itself rather than purely the valley but the article is a world capital city so should be much better than it is at present... Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:54, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

What always impresses me about your writing is the breadth of sources you use, exactly how encyclopedia article should be written. When I look for more information to add I generally find you have it all covered which is testament to a very able writer. I've also noticed that your english is improving all the time and your vocabulary is becoming quite distinguished. A citation is need to support the 953 windows claim as I intend to use part of that for the DYK hook. I was thinking of something like DYK that the Hawa Mahal palace in Jaipur, India, has 953 small windows (Jharokhas) which were built with the intention to allow royal ladies to view the street below without being seen? Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:21, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. I have started the Kathmandu expansion. But may take a few days. I will introduce the citation for the hook you intend to use. --Nvvchar (talk) 15:38, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

Great, we could also do with uploading some more images of Kathmandu, there should be tons on flickr. Is "Honeycomb" Palace OK for moving to the mainspace? No rush working on the Kathmandu article. A good article will probably take a week to write... Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:08, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

Yes that an ideal layout although I've added a Landmarks and cityscape which summarises the most notable landmarks, see Bratislava for an example. Yes feel free to work on the article in the mainspace, that's what I've been doing with the Clint Eastwood article and have reached 1969 so far.... Although you might want to construct a section in your sandbox first and then post it gradually building up the article.... Look forward to seeing your developments. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:15, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

Glad you are patient with them. I sometimes find them too picky at DYK. I really not think the public will care whether it has only been 4.6 not 5 but "rules" are "rules" I guess. Thanks. Dr. Blofeld White cat 10:58, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

Don't worry I haven't given up on DYK, just at times it seems some people intentionally seem to try to stop articles appearing on the front page.... Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:49, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

Lovely. I uploaded a few pictures and added them as we are pretty spoilt for choice! If only all topics had an abundance of images like this!! I've also removed/fixed some things and added a reference to support the Guiness Workd Record which is the subject of the DYK hook. Next I think we are due a river or lake article....I request Manas River. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:38, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

Look, if you really want your name to be stamped all over the editing history I strongly suggest you write the article in the mainspace and do it all yourself if you are going to be picky about such a trivial thing as that....If it is that important to you I will esnure I always say "expanded from Nvvchar's sandbox" in future. I was not aware this was of major importance to you. OK?? Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:58, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. Don't bother with my note. I am feeling low at 3AM here with some health probelms. --Nvvchar (talk) 22:09, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

I wish you a speedy recovery!! Take care. I hope you feel better in the morning. Best. Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:10, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

Well the problem with Indian and Pakistani articles in particular are that they attract a great number of people who don't speak very good english and there is a tendency to implant their own POV into articles saying "it is very beautiful village and local taxi driver is very famous man" things like that. Most of the additions are poorly written and unreferenced but the task requird to watch all of the articles is too great. Hey, you interested in old english architecture? Check out my recent articles Virginia House and Wormleighton Manor. I need images of Virginia House!! Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:46, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Look forward to seeing your Kathmandu draft. Oh no, I'm not requesting a collaboration or for you to write about english articles, you;ve got your work cut out with India! I was just asking if you are interested in architecture in general or whether it was just specifically Indian architecture!! Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:57, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

That's great! Oh Rishikesh is another which should be a balanced fully written article. I wish we had more decent editors on here from India like yourself. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:16, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

Looks good, although it needs more images dispersed throughout the article whether in double images or singular and history in my view should come after naming and before geography... Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:35, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

I'll upload these old photos to put in the history section here. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:50, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Images are cluttering at the mo as the sections are yet to be written. Once filled out it will look fine.... This article has big potential, and if it takes several weeks to write amongst our other work so be it. But it needs to be worrked on every day or two whenever we feel like it I guess.. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:21, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

I'm just adding the meat to the history section at the moment. It can be reduced and cut down to the most relevant points later and sources found. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:57, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

Jag Mandir

[edit]

From what I can see, I gathered you didn't need my help with it... Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:05, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

I'vr finished for the day on Kathmandu now. I've done a lot today on it. If I have time tomorrow I'll take a look at Jag Mandir. Hopefully you can write a good history for Kathmandu with John... Dr. Blofeld White cat 23:20, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

Looks good. Yes I'll sort out those old pics. There is a still a little info about bus travel etc from Lonely PLanet I wanted to add. If its OK with you I'll move it into the main space now and make the tweaks there. Still needs a bit of work, I'll condense the Anglo nepalese war history I bit and reference the modern history info, some of which can be removed... Going live now, it can be worked on in the next few days then and then DYK'd... Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:41, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

I'll see if I can expand the Durbar section tomorrow, I think it could be made a bit better. just a few tweaks for today. Looks 100 times better than the former article did already so mission accomplished eh?. Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:03, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

The history is the worst part. I think maybe we should remove all the stuff about prime ministers in the 20th century, it doesn't really seem reelvant. The stuff about embassies though is. Sources also need to be added to sections like sports, media and theatre too. Quick google search should find some. I'll look at your article tonight.. Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:45, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

Patience my friend. I'm working on the history at the moment. Once fully written and copyedited and John has made his additions then we can decide to split and condense the section as with the others. I am not really bothered about a DYK with this, rather I think it will be possible to attain GA status with some work. Yes a lot of clarifications and references are needed, but this will be an ongoing development and there shouldn't be any need to rush. Thanks for your further edits today, they are greatly appreciated. As for the notable people, this is very common to articles about cities. However, they need to all be referenced. The best solution indeed would be to split into List of people from Kathmandu. Best. Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:35, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

For some reason reference 15 and 12 are blanked out. Can you fix this? Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:46, 20 December 2009 (UTC) Please don't remove red links. Most of the red links are on notable topics that should have articles and I intended doing a stub spree to blue link them. It is far better they are linked and with articles than not. I agree red links look ugly but they are important for growth! Good work otherwise! Dr. Blofeld White cat 11:26, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

Everything OK with this article now? Dr. Blofeld White cat 11:55, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

Have a great Christmas andHappy New Year too mate!! Very pleased with the Kathmandu article, I'm sure it can be polished off, the main problem at the moment is that the history is unbalanced its needs a lot more info about the Malla, needs an expert to write it. I have a book on the history of Nepal dated to 1877 but it is quite unreadible not to mention confusing. It was written by native Nepalis and translated in India but the quality is lacking...! Even if we don't go for GA or higher, I think our initial mission was accomplished. I'll finish cleaning up the history today and DYK nom it... Did you look at the southern India river article afterwards? Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:30, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

I think the best thing is to leave the split for the moment, once JOhn has done what he has to do and I've dug out possible sources to even it u[ then we can consider splitting. It still needs to be written so best wait... Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:48, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

I have no idea about Mattu Pongal, it with a pic will be a good jalikattu DYK (though needs ref, i will search). I can not help much in expansion, i will clean up a bit. Nominate Mattu pongal in Special occasion holding area of T:DYK. Add reference to the date like the calender where the 16 jan date is confirmed. In Paduka, footprints of Vishnu, Buddha etc. are not padukas (footwear), so needs to be removed. --Redtigerxyz Talk 04:23, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
For Mattu Pongal, the reference used for jallikattu is not a WP:RS. In fact, [1] and [2] says jattikattu is observed before or after the mattu pongal. --Redtigerxyz Talk 05:10, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
It seems jallikattu is observed on, before, after mattu pongal depending upon place. Though the first web ref in the article can be removed as other books say almost the same and it can not be treated a RS. --Redtigerxyz Talk 05:35, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
Padukas also denote footprints [3]. I got confused. --Redtigerxyz Talk 06:04, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
I will add to Paduka after 31st. A little busy now. --Redtigerxyz Talk 16:10, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
Happy New Year. Mattu Pongal: this para is supported by Bhalla ref, please check and add appropriate ref: "The cow–keepers dressed in their regale sprinkle the cattle with saffron water with mango leaves with prayers to protect them from evil and shout the popular slogan of the festival, “Pongal! Pongal!”. This prayer is a special wish for the progressive prosperity and growth of the cattle population, with the blessings of Indra and Krishna (Gopala), who was a cow-herd. Devotees pay their respect to cows by bending down, like praying in a temple, and touching their feet and foreheads, followed by an aarti (showing camphor flame to the object of praise) and offering the cattle prasad (food offering, in this case is called Sakkar Pongal – a delicacy cooked of rice, moong dal (green gram) with jaggery and dry fruits). The cattle are taken in a procession, attended by bands of music, through the village streets to a public space in the village. The resounding of their bells attract the villagers as the young men race each other's cattle. Then the entire atmosphere becomes festive and full of fun and revelry. Big commotion is seen when the game "Jallikattu" or "Manji Virattu" starts in which groups of young men chase the running bulls." --Redtigerxyz Talk 12:30, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
Mattu Pongal is ready to go on mainspace. I suggest a DYK about Jallikattu with that img. --Redtigerxyz Talk 06:28, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Lakes come under Geography category in GAN. But before posting, I suggest adding a reference in place of [citation needed] tag and converting the point-lists into text (prose). Yeah, sure I'll look into it a bit later. I'll still gladly create a few DYKs with you, although much of my work this year will be destubbing African related articles and transwikying various articles from different languages so I won't be creating many at all singularly because of the mass of cleanup work I have to do, so pretty soon you are going to have double the number of DYKs I have!. But, whenever you have anything Buddhist/northern India related or geographical related going on I'll gladly help!! Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:16, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Nice one. You need a citation though for "It is said[who?] to be the earliest known Panchayatana temple in North India.[citation needed] Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:56, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Excellent. Funny you should say that actually as I was readin my DK book on India last night and it pays special attention to Alchi in the discussion of monasteries and evn has a birdeye view drawing of the place. I'll have a look at your new GA candidate shortly. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:14, 17 January 2010 (UTC)

Beautiful work!! I'd recommend changing the title to Buddhist monasteries of Himachal Pradesh. Monastery also doesn't need to be capitalized when discussing them in general.. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:24, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

I've moved it to a general article Buddhism in Himachal Pradesh as a lot of it is about Buddhism in the region. One thing though can you add a Festivals section at the bottom. It needs to cover Buddhist festivals and culture practised in Himachal Pradesh too. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:15, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

Isn't Hemis Monastery and a few of the others discussed in Jammu Kashmir? Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:37, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

Sharabha warning

[edit]

I don't know any other alternative source, unfortunately. Google suspects that is a suspicious site; Norton thinks it is clean. I had referred to that site in the past when Google identified it as clean.

Raj2004 (talk) 22:31, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

yes, Nvvchar the dvaita site was clean many years ago. It did have a warning a year and half ago then the site was declared clean by Google, just recently. But now Google has started a new warning, for some reason. Raj2004 (talk) 01:51, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Just to let you know, Nvvchar I am not Madhva so I am not advocating a Vaishnavite point of view and neutral towards religious points of view as every group has its own point of view. I have also written article on Shaivism such as Rudram.I truly believe in this Advaita point of view: http://www.kamakoti.org/hindudharma/part14/chap9.htm Raj2004 (talk) 01:59, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

I am removing the web reference as anywhere the reliability and neutrality of the web reference may have been questioned in GAN. The book ref anyway is a good ref for the Dvaita POV. --Redtigerxyz Talk 04:32, 21 January 2010 (UTC)
If we can find Shaivasarvasvakhandanam of Vijayindra Tirtha, the details can be filled in. --Redtigerxyz Talk 04:36, 21 January 2010 (UTC)
I thought, the debate was about just the "not-safe" reference. right? you and Raj2004 only speak the link on my talk. What part of Trimurti and Vishnu sahasranama are you talking about? I am confused. --Redtigerxyz Talk 05:21, 21 January 2010 (UTC)
OK. But, the dvaita site checked from Modzilla is really giving the "Reported Attack Site" warning. (by clicking on site link from Sharabha and Trimurti articles) + if you check through Google, then you get "This site may harm your computer.". Someone's computer would be harmed if there is no anti-virus software by clicking on it. We can search for a safer reference. --Redtigerxyz Talk 05:41, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Nvvchar, you misunderstood my silence as having a prefernce for Advaita idelogy, as I just got your message late Eastern standard time US. I have no preference for idealogy. Please add the Srivaishnavite interpretation of Vishnu sahasrnama. Thanks, Raj2004 (talk) 12:18, 21 January 2010 (UTC) Thanks. I will.--Nvvchar (talk) 12:46, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Raj2004, left a message on my talk about Vishnu sahasrnama, I am ignorant about Srivaishnavite interpretation of Vishnu sahasrnama and I leave it to you two to sort if there exists any pending dispute. I hope all issues in Sharabha are settled. --Redtigerxyz Talk 12:56, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the comments. I clarified that the comment on the first verse was by Parasara Bhattar or Sri Bhattar. Raj2004 (talk) 13:35, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

You're welcome. I condensed it further to be more readable. Raj2004 (talk) 20:31, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Since the last line after Parashar Bhattar's interpretation is not sepfically referenced, you may consider deleting it. as you have done with another sentence in the same vein in earlier section.--Nvvchar (talk) 01:35, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Ucucha 06:00, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

HI, yes can you find a hook. I couldn't think of one for the Buddhism in Himachal Pradesh. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:39, 22 January 2010 (UTC) I would suggest a hook like DYK that "Buddhism in Himachel Pradesh dates back to the 3rd century". However most of the article claims the 8th century yet in the history section it says 3rd century somewhat confusingly. Can you please clarify this, maybe specifically say Tibetan Buddhism was widely introduced to Himachel Pradesh in the 8th century and use this in the hook, specially Tibetan Buddhism. You'll need to claim this in th intro and in the history section that although it began to appear in 3rd century it wasn't until 8th century that Tibetan Buddhism was introduced. SOmething like that. I'll look at Palcho and Alchi this evening if I have time. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:14, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay I've been busy. Did you find an approved hook for Buddhism in Himachal Pradesh after? I'll look at Palcho and Alchi and then pushkar late shortly, phew you work quickly!! Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:52, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

Pushkar

[edit]

The Padma Purana of Pushkar is the most famous, which is already discussed. However, Legend is WP:UNDUE in the lake article. Also, History in the sandbox reflects History of Pushkar. I would like to collaborate with you on expansion of Pushkar Lake and Brahma temple at Pushkar where legend can be transferred in detail (of course if you and Blofield is OK with it). In lake, only legends about creation of lake like the one about Brahma's lotus falling there and creating the lake can be discussed in detail. --Redtigerxyz Talk 04:03, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

Another point: various legends give different names to Brahma's wife: Sarasvati (sometimes Brahma's daughter, NOT consort), Brahmani, Savitri and Gayatri, being the most common. --Redtigerxyz Talk 04:07, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
Instead of deleting, I suggest we move it to another userpage so temple and lake articles can be created in parallel. --Redtigerxyz Talk 06:56, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
Please post a link of the sandbox on my talk. --Redtigerxyz Talk 07:13, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
Saw both pages. You sure do create articles quickly. I need to inform me that since I am already working with another editor on goddess Varahi article, I will be able to give full attention to 2 Pushkar tomorrow or day after. --Redtigerxyz Talk 13:08, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
Lets worry about the hooks after we complete the articles, as now we do not the complete picture of how the articles are going to be shaped. --Redtigerxyz Talk 15:04, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
The major obstacle for Salimgarh Fort GA is lack of detail in Structure (criterion 3a: boad in coverage). --Redtigerxyz Talk 05:12, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
I had remove the detail in legend in lake article as the detail is UNDUE there, but the detail would be needed for the temple article. --Redtigerxyz Talk 15:19, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
As Pushkar legend, Brahma's wife is Savitri and Sarasvati, his daughter. I distinctly remember the temple on the hill is for the enraged wife. --Redtigerxyz Talk 14:58, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
What ref does Pushkar p. 195 etc. imply??? --Redtigerxyz Talk 15:04, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
OK. will correct the formatting of ref. --Redtigerxyz Talk 15:39, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
I was a little busy for some days so I have restricted myself minor typos corrections, not much research. Will complete my edits on lake and temple latest by wed. --Redtigerxyz Talk 15:51, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
I will to then complete by tue evening. What about Blofield's edits? If he collaborating on both articles? We need to wait further if he wants to add/subtract content. --Redtigerxyz Talk 16:13, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

Go ahead and post them. Don't worry about me. You two have put the solid work into them so you two should get the credit. Keep up the good work! Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:38, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

Yes it more than satisfies 5x expansion rule, but is there a hurry for DYK nom? I will complete by tue morning.--Redtigerxyz Talk 12:15, 30 January 2010 (UTC)
The red crosses came as the 25, 40, 50 DYK medals are now abolished and substituted by corresponding creations/expansions and nominations medals. --Redtigerxyz Talk 03:28, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
Work complete on temple article. Move it to mainspace and nominate. --Redtigerxyz Talk 13:22, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
Moved to main space. But I have not changed the name of the old artcile. I would appreciate your nominating it on DYK. Thanks.--Nvvchar (talk) 14:24, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
No need of changing the title as article title is the popular name, but bold name in lead should be the proper name. I have not completed my input to lake article. will try to complete by tomo. evening or tue morning latest. Nominating temple for DYK.--Redtigerxyz Talk 16:07, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
I have nominated the temple, but maybe a better hook is possible. Which caves are you talking about? --Redtigerxyz Talk 16:35, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
I am not well-acquainted with the Junnar caves, but it is a good article to create. I will to collaborate on it. I have also located foll. expansion candidates: Elephanta Caves, Jogeshwari Caves, Mahakali Caves, Gundicha Temple. Are you interested in collaboration in expansion in 1/more of these? --Redtigerxyz Talk 12:31, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
May be you were misled by 8KB file size, but the "readable prose size" is 3.2KB, which when expanded 5x would be 16kB prose, which is much lower than 104KB prose of Kathmandu, you expanded and slightly lesser than Khandoba is 18kB in prose size. Elephanta Caves then can be nominated for GA too. When are you returning, till then I can start Elephanta, since it will be a long expansion. I am currently completing lake article.--Redtigerxyz Talk 13:12, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
Use User:Dr pda/prosesize.js script. Easier to calculate prose size. --Redtigerxyz Talk 13:15, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
I have almost completed the lake article. Just need to complete lead. Great research Nvvchar. Worth a GAN. --Redtigerxyz Talk 05:59, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

..that man-eating crocodiles used to be a menace in the Puskhar Lake (pictured) in Rajasthan, India; resulting in deaths of pilgrims but many considered it lucky to be eaten by crocodiles? (minor rewrite). --Redtigerxyz Talk 06:57, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
Also immediately nom for GA. --Redtigerxyz Talk 07:01, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
A request. Can you pl post a format here for a joint nomination on GA since I am not fully familar with the procedure. You wanted me to record my acceptance of nomination for Sharabha, which I have not been able to do. Thanks --Nvvchar (talk) 07:19, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
Put # {{la|Pushkar Lake}} with [[User:UserName]] ~~~~ under geography section in WP:GAN, add {{subst:GAN|subtopic=geo}} on article talk. A talk page about collaboration on user's page, IMO is enough to suggest consent in a joint nomination (like this one by me). --Redtigerxyz Talk 12:01, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
No need to add "with User:Nvvchar" in "Pushkar Lake (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) with User:Nvvchar Nvvchar (talk) 12:25, 2 February 2010 (UTC)" if it is an one person nomination. Add "with User:xyz" if joint nomination. Also no need to sign after {{subst:GAN|subtopic=geo}}, your name comes automatically on the talk. Should I start Elephanta? --Redtigerxyz Talk 14:36, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
OK. Please correct Wikipedia:Good article nominations of Pushkar Lake. About Junnar Caves, it will be after 7th, I presume. Can you still assign an userpage, so I can add Junnar links to it or should I assign one of my userpages for it? --Redtigerxyz Talk 16:14, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

The DYK project (nominate) 06:00, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

Very impressive work. I don't want to pile up the work load as that Manas River article I know we plan on doing, but I was going to say that if we do another monastery soon it should be Sera Monastery. It is pone of the most important monasteries and I am certain a great deal could be written about it. I've wanted it to be expanded since 2006 as the current state of its is very poor. I know info for each of the hermitages using the Tibetan Himalayan library could be used, probably to create a summarised info on them along with the history/structure etc of the overall monastery. Potentially it could be a very good article... I'm back editing as Himalayan Explorer now!

See here. Actually if you click on any of the Sera Hermitages in the nav box the external links to each should be there...

Enjoy your trip. Take some photographs if you can!! See you in a week then.. ‡ Himalayan ≜ ΨMonastery 13:05, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

OK I'll look at it shortly. I didn't know what you meant about the suggestion for a 15 articles hook for the Sera Monastery. Do you mean expand the main articles and all of the seperate hermitage articles into one super hook? Sounds like a good idea but will take us a while to write them all...But its a core Tibetan article so why not.. Sometime I will try to get the Kathmandu article promoted, my concern is the history which I think is uncomprehensive and poorly balanced. ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 13:40, 12 February 2010 (UTC) Excellent. But will we be credited for every article so it will count as 15 rather than 1? ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 13:55, 12 February 2010 (UTC)

DYK about opportunities for new articles on Dams in Burma?

[edit]

தை பிறந்தால் வழி பிறக்கும்

Nvvchar,

Greetings and Happy New Year. We haven't been in touch for almost a year. I thought you may be interested that I have been working on Myitsone Dam which is now advanced to DYK Prep area 1. Most recently I have have been working on Dams in Burma and Weigyi Dam, neither of which are ready for the main space. If you are interested, you are welcome to work on those articles in my user spaces.

Knowing your interest in DYKs, you will find the List of Operating Hydroelectric Dams in Burma a good source of material for new articles. I have already started Yeywa Dam, and would like to see articles on the other dams in order of decreasing MW size. A template for these Burma Dam articles is: Tamanthi Dam.

I bit off more than I can chew with these Burmese Dams. I should be back in my usual territory, Protected areas of Tamil Nadu. If you are interested in quick opportunity for a few new articles, go for it. Regards, -Marcus334 (talk) 20:45, 17 February 2010 (UTC)

Seems like a good scientific article. Coverage is good.

  • Wikilinking only the genus: I am not so sure about that.
  • Incorporate some of the images to the body of text. I'm afraid the rest has to go.
  • Some references are dead. [10]
  • Some references need author, work, pub date etc.
  • Definitely disambigs need to correct. Redirects little too much. [11]

I'll do a review for Keibul Lamjao National Park later. Best of luck in GAN.--Chanaka L (talk) 07:11, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

Sera

[edit]

Excellent start. You may want to speak to User:John Hill about that. I believe Sera was partly rebuilt in the 80s. A good articles would cover the historical monastery and the renovated one. Actually some of the hermitages have little info available, it might be best to redirect them into the main article. Unless of couse you can find further sources than the Himalayan library to fully expand them..

Do you think there is enough info to expand all of the hermitage articles too? From what I've found I'd say its probably best to redirect at least half of them... Unless you can add more content that is.... ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 14:07, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Sera and the nunneries

[edit]

Greetings! Nice to meet you at last! I feel like I should introduce myself properly - but perhaps you could look at my user page and read the notes I have written about myself there. I still find it a bit strange getting to know people via the internet!

Now, about these articles - you have certainly taken on a big task with some very difficult subjects. First, let me say that it is very difficult to get much information on most of the nunneries in Tibet - this is for several reasons. Firstly, before the Chinese invasion they were mostly very small and poor compared to the monasteries and, therefore, had little written about them. Since the Chinese arrived, and especially since the Cultural Revolution, very few, if any, of the old nunneries survived and, in fact, almost all the living lineages of nuns were broken. This was caused by the deaths of most of the lineage-holders and the lack of on-going teaching and support in Tibet.

In recent times, largely through the efforts of nuns who have escaped to India and interest from foreign women who had become involved with Buddhism (some of them wanting to become nuns), there has been a revival of sorts, and this has been supported by H.H. The Dalai Lama. Some years ago a few nuns went to Hong Kong to receive teachings from properly qualified Chinese nuns and, I believe, managed to restore some lineages. These nuns then came back to India and have been training other nuns there. But, of course, this is a slow process. Then, most nuns in Tibet, have had to continue without properly trained teachers and direction. I believe some of the qualified nuns from India have returned to Tibet and given teachings there - but I have little information on all this.

So, dear sir, it is extremely difficult to get full, accurate, and up-to-date information on the few nunneries which are being restored in Tibet. I would suggest trying to contact some nuns and asking if they can supply any information. You might start by contacting people through sites such as: http://www.thubtenchodron.org/BuddhistNunsMonasticLife/western_buddhist_nuns.html and http://www.buddhanet.net/l_women.htm . Finally, unfortunately, I don't have any photos of nunneries in Tibet - in fact I never visited any there when I visited briefly in 1993, though I did have the good fortune to meet a few very cheerful and lovely nuns.

About Sera: as one of the very biggest monasteries in the world with many schools and associated institutions, it is very difficult to write it all up satisfactorily. I think you are doing a fabulous job - but it is very difficult to write about what did exist before the Chinese arrived and how things are at present (especially as this keeps changing as there has been a lot of reconstruction). Also, I find it difficult often to know what is reconstruction of landmark sites by the Chinese (which is often mainly aimed at preserving places as museums rather than as living institutions), and actual reconstruction by Tibetans to restore funtioning Buddhist institutions.

If you like (and don't mind me interfering) I will from time to time check in to your "sandboxes" and make small edits and additions (mostly just "polishing up" the English grammar and spelling) but, unfortunately, I may not have much time and energy to spare over the next few week as I have not been well and have a lot of things happening in my personal life including visitors coming from overseas to visit. However, if you have any questions please feel free to contact me on my user page at any time.

I send you my very best wishes and look forward to working with you in the future.

Sincerely, John Hill (talk) 08:27, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Excellent job on the nunneries. I'd suggest we expand as many of the hermutages as possible and if there isn't enough info for seperate articles then we redirect... ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 11:47, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

I'd recommend we redirect those hermitages which have little info and only have seperate articles on those which can be expanded beyond stubs. I'm not feeling very well at the moment I've had a persistent throat infection for sometime now and have flu like symptons but the antibiotics aren't working... Thanks. ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 12:09, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

I agree with Himalayan Explorer on all the excellent work you have been doing. Unfortunately I am not able to help much at the moment - just too busy here and I have little information on the nunneries. However, I came across an interesting couple of downloadable papers today which you might like to check out here: [12] and [13] . Cheers and all best wishes, John Hill (talk) 03:59, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Now if we had a book like this .... ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 12:29, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

OK great, there are some referencing errors though in some of the hermitage sections... I had a look in my book on Tibet which is a guide to Tibet from the 1980s and there really was nothing more I can add to it. Some time in the future I hope somebody will be able to expand the early history into the detail it deserves.. ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 17:43, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

That's OK. Get better soon. I still have a bit of a sore throat and temperature but am feeling a little better today. Salt water, honey and limes have greater medicinal benefits than one might imagine.DO you want to expand any more of the hermitages or are you happy to go live with the ones we've so far worked on? ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 13:58, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Good idea. Once I've copyedited Negodong the four articles shoulod be ready for posting. In fact I'll move them into the main space now. ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 17:09, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Perhaps we could try to contact him and request who permits wikipedia to use the images of the hermitages?

DId he? I thought John said he didn't have any info on the early history or was too busy? ONy minor edits like this.. I don't think he'll be too heartbroken if he isn't credited. In fact I credited him previously on an article he adde dmuch more content to and actually removed the DYK from his talk page as he said he didn't feel he deserved credit. Jakpo, Jokpo

[edit]

Thanks so much for your kind comments on my talk page. Now, to try to answer your question - the Pangri Jokpo hermitage in Gyurme Dorje's guidebook would seem unlikely to be related to the Jakpo Hermitage if the latter is indeed "near Lhasa", as the Pangri Jokpo hermitage is some 200 km north of Lhasa. The romanisations of Tibetan names (as you are undoubtedly well aware) are often very difficult to follow and come in many different forms. I have been unable so far to find any information on the "Jakpo Hermitage" near Lhasa - but I will keep looking to see what I can discover. BTW, I have just recently ordered two new reference books - Gyurme Dorje's latest version of his excellent guidebook - which was published in 2009 and is the second update since the copy I have now which was published back in 1999 - so, hopefully, I will be able to update and, perhaps, correct some articles when that arrives. Also, I have ordered Mapping the Tibetan World, which I am told is also excellent - so I hope to be able to resolve some questions I have been puzzling over for a long time.

I notice you say that you are a Hindu by birth but a Buddhist at heart. I can really empathise with that. I was raised in Trinidad as an atheist, with a Hindu family next door, and with many close Muslim friends, but I am really a Buddhist at heart (though there does not need to be any contradiction with atheism there). However, I am hardly what one would call a "practising Buddhist". A very senior Tibetan monk once asked me if I was Buddhist - I had to think for a while, before I blurted out that I was "an extremely lazy Buddhist". (Being lazy about trying to reach enlightenment is, of course, just about the worst thing a Buddhist can do!). But I have a deep regard for Buddhism and have been fortunate enough to have lived amongst Tibetans and there is much that is very dear to my heart and which gives me courage to keep on travelling through this "vale of tears", which is our world. I also have been greatly influenced by, and my life made much fuller and richer by, my contact with various forms of Hinduism. Cheers and all best wishes, John Hill (talk) 22:49, 7 March 2010 (UTC) Oh, and thanks for your kind offer of help - I may well call on you sometime. John Hill (talk) 22:49, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Excellent its raining DYKs!!! ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 12:17, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Purbuchok Hermitage needs a citation. Another thing, I notice you keep referring to the 1959 invasion as the "Cultural Revolution". It wasn't, not technically anyway even they this informally refers to it. It was an angry response to the 1959 Tibetan uprising. The cultural revolution took place under Mao Zedong from 1966 to 1976 and was an era of economic upheaval. Granted though the cultural revolution was just part of China's reunification of its "homelands" but was seemingly more economically than politicially oriented although one could say the two go hand in hand. The 1959 invasion actually took place during the Great Leap Forward phase, but the efforts to reunite Tibet began around 1910 to my knowledge but they were resisted. I would just refer to it as the "1959 invasion". ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 12:38, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Can you think of a hook to connect them as a double nom? If so once the citation has been added they are good to go. ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 12:56, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

10-12 articles eh? You are very ambitious! Offhand I could think of something like a Rivers of Assam or another Indian state series to write articles on each of the rivers and include them in a hook... ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 13:19, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Don't be silly LOL! Of course it hasn't been posted. Do you think they would accept it as a short stub? Somebody is confusing the hermitage with Sera Monastery, I'm sure. It seems John Hill copied and pasted the project tags from the Pabongka article talk page and included the DYK hook by accident...

As for the multi hooks Template:Architecture of India would provide some potential. An article about architecture for each state, or an article about architecture in one state and multiple articles on landmarks within them. ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 13:22, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

How about a Architecture of Sikkim series? ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 13:26, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

You take things too literally. I know you were not being "silly". There was just a mix up thats all with the tagging. Well spotted. ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 13:39, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

BTW nice find with this.. ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 13:52, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

I did get that impression actually and thought it was because of your profession. Given that you worked in this field for decades you want something else to whet your appetite. A pity though, as you undoubtedly have a lot of expertise to improve articles in this field, important ones too. ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 07:24, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

OK. I'm working on the Bobby Deol article at the moment. I'm not sure about the information you added. I like the pictures but I think a lot of it it not relevant to Sera monastery itself and would be better suited to an article about Debating in Buddhism. I would condense it down and only briefly draw upon the concept of debating in Buddhism in context. If there is not much information to be added on Sera's debates itself then a shortish section is OK, its better that than the section not being concise and sticking to the main subject of the article... I'd recommend moving a lot of the info to a new article on Debating in Buddhism perhaps? I'll be free this evening and tomorrow perhaps to help you polish it off for a GA anyway..

Sure I'll look for some photos in an hour or two... ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 10:47, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Perhaps a multi-image thing with three or so photos of the debates like in the Thikse article would be more suitable than the big box? ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 11:20, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks! Bollywood or any Indian cinema is not easy to write about as most sources online are fan blogs. Can you think or a hook for the latest two articles as a double? ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 16:13, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

I think the Deol article is almost GA standard now. Just needs a few fixes and minor copyedits I think. I think I'll propose it shortly. I'll begin copyediting Sera tonight for GA, I need a break right now.. ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 16:51, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

OK they'll need citations to support the Dode valley claim. ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 13:45, 12 March 2010 (UTC) My beautiful book this arrived yesterday. Re: Chittaurgarh Fort

[edit]

I began the review, but got held up due to RL. Will complete it by this weekend. Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 07:44, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for your response. While I appreciate your enthusiasm to work on the article and bring it up to GA standards, I am of the opinion that it requires some sustained effort, especially w.r.t. copy-editing and sourcing. In my opinion, this would be better achieved if you (and other involved editors) worked on this at your convenience over a longer period, and then renominated the article at WP:GAN. A review period is typically short and in the present case, given the number of issues with the article, would not be adequate to satisfactorily address all of them. That is the reason I failed the article instead of putting it on hold. Once again, I suggest that you take your time to edit the article and address all concerns, and subsequently re-nominate it. Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 12:09, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
