Tanimbar Islands Regency (Indonesian: Kabupaten Kepulauan Tanimbar) is a regency of Maluku province, Indonesia, consisting primarily of the Tanimbar Islands. The Regency covers a land area of 10,102 km2, and it had a population of 105,341 at the 2010 Census[3] and 123,572 at the 2020 Census.[4] The regency seat lies on town of Saumlaki, where most of economic and political activities of the regency took place.

The regency was previously part of Southeast Maluku Regency, from which it was created on 1999. The regency was formerly known as Southeast Western Maluku Regency, before being renamed to Tanimbar Islands Regency on January 2019. It is one of the outermost regency in Indonesia, bordering Australian water in the south.

The regency was formerly named Southeast Western Maluku Regency (Kabupaten Maluku Tenggara Barat), until it was renamed as Tanimbar Islands Regency (Kabupaten Kepulauan Tanimbar) on 23 January 2019 (2019-01-23); the legislation for this was passed on 28 January 2019.[5][6][7]

Geography[edit]

Tanimbar Islands Regency is comprised of the so-called Tanimbar Archipelago. The regency has total area of 52,995.20 square kilometers, of which 10,102.92 square kilometers are land area or around 19.06% and 42,892.28 square kilometers are water or around 80.94%.[8] The entirety of the regency is noted to have 81 islands. The regency is one of the most southern island group which made the Maluku province together with Southwest Maluku Regency.

As at 2010 the regency was divided into nine districts (kecamatan), tabulated below with their areas in km2 and their 2010 Census populations:[9] Subsequently, a tenth district - Molu Maru (consisting of the two northernmost islands in the Tanimbars - Molu and Maru - with a combined land area of 63.8 km2) - was by 2017 created from part of the existing Wuorlabobar District. The districts' populations at the 2020 Census are also shown.[10]

Local government and politics[edit]

The Tanimbar Islands Regency is a second-level administrative division equivalent to a city. As a regency, it is headed by a regent who is elected democratically. Heads of districts are appointed directly by the regent on the recommendation of the regency secretary. Executive power lies with the regent and vice regent while legislative function is exercised by the regency's parliament.[11][12][13]

The regency is part of 7th electoral district for provincial parliament together with Southwest Maluku Regency, which combined has 5 representatives out of 45 in the Maluku province's parliament. For the regency's parliament, it is divided into three electoral districts with total members of the regency parliament being 25 representatives. As of 2023, the last election was on 17 April 2019 and the next one would be in the year 2024.

Healthcare[edit]

The regency in total has four hospitals, three of which are located in South Tanimbar District where Saumlaki, the regency seat and main town of the region located. The regency also has in total 55 puskesmas, four registered pharmacies, and 145 healthcare posts.[14] One of the main hospital in the regency is Dr. P.P Magretti Saumlaki Regional Hospital. The hospital is a public hospital located in town of Saumlaki, operated by the regency government and classified as D-class hospital.[15] Another hospital in the regency includes Dr. D. Anatototi Regional Hospital, which is also a public operated by the government and located in North Tanimbar District, and Fatima Saumlaki Hospital located in Saumlaki which is private and operated by a Catholic organization.[16][17]

Education[edit]

The regency has in total 31 kindergartens, 121 elementary schools, 68 junior highschools, 23 senior highschools, in addition of 8 vocational highschools. The regency also has in total three registered higher education institutions, from which two are located in South Tanimbar and one in North Tanimbar.[14] All of the colleges are private and mostly owned by Rumpun Lelemuku Saumlaki Higher Learning Foundation.[18]
