Introduction[edit]

Gemischtes Hack is a German-language comedy show by the author and presenter Tommi Schmitt and the comedian Felix Lobrecht, which is published on Spotify on a weekly basis. It is considered the most successful podcast amongst the German podcasts on Spotify and was the only non-English-speaking show in Spotify's top 10 global podcasts in 2020. [1]

Gemischtes Hack is a figurative meaning that means the two different personalities of the podcasters are like pork and beef in gemischtes Hack which would translate as "mixed minced meat" into English.

The first episode of Gemischtes Hack was released on September 27, 2017 via the online music service SoundCloud. The title of the podcast had not yet been decided on when recording the first episode. In addition to Gemischtes, the name Halb/Halb was also up for discussion. Both titles are meant to express the fact that the podcast is a collaboration between the hosts, in which both partners contribute to the character of the podcast through the idiosyncrasies of their biographies. [2] Later, the title Gemischtes was expanded to include the English meaning of the word "hack", in that lifehacks became an essential component of the podcast. These come either from Tommi Schmitt, Felix Lobrecht or the community of Gemischtes Hack.

After the first episode was released, both presenters were surprised by the positive feedback.[3] The number of regular listeners increased steadily and made Gemischtes Hack the most popular German-language podcast at times.[4] Since September 2019, the streaming service Spotify holds exclusive rights to the podcast.[5]

Lobrecht starts each episode with a rap quote that sometimes has current relevance or is connected with the topics of the podcast. In this respect the episode #74 ICH BRAUCH NE GUN (English: I NEED A GUN) is an exception, as Lena Meyer-Landrut reads out an ironic, disrespectful rap quote about herself by the artist Tarek from K.I.Z. [6]

The episodes constantly represent a dialogue between both artists and don't follow any fixed pattern apart from some recurring categories. Rather, Schmitt and Lobrecht tell anecdotes from their past and their everyday professional life. The humor often arises from the biographies of the two moderators.

While Lobrecht spent his childhood and teenage years in Berlin-Gropiusstadt, Schmitt grew up as a doctor's son in the district of Lippe. Their respective socialization is usually a topic of the podcast and often the subject of their jokes. [7] The only category that occurs in almost all episodes is 'Fünf schnelle Fragen an...' (english: Five quick questions for...). Ever since April 2020, this category has been continued in a weekly interview format with differing guests. [8] Guests in the first season of this format were Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim, Mats Hummels, 'Social Entrepreneur' Simon Böhnlein, Juju, Christian Ulmen and Linda Zervakis. Featured in the second season were RIN, Sara Nuru, Luisa Neubauer, Hassan Akkouch, $ick and Raul Krauthausen.

During the format, the producers say whether the shared life hacks alluded to in the Podcast's title comes from the producers themselves or from their Twitter and Instagram communities. Some categories, such as "Success Stories" and "Fail of the Week," were removed from the recurring episode programs and now only appear once in a while. In November 2021, Lobrecht and Schmitt, as the fictional Ballermann duo Die Sacknähte, worked together with Ikke Hüftgold to publish the song "Unten kommt die Gurke rein," which is based on audio tracks of episode #162 SEX-CORONA. The song's publication revenue will be donated to sea rescue operations in the Mediterranean sea.[9]

  • Tommi and Felix call things that are actually very rare, “Things that are constant”.
  • “Things that are kind of right wing” is what they call behaviors that are not necessarily politically right wing, but that often get associated with the party or just seem like they are in their opinion.

  • Somehow right-wing: This category, created by Lobrecht, is about things that are somehow right-wing.
  • What is ... doing right now?: Lobrecht and Schmitt speculate about what different celebrities are doing at this very moment.

Music[edit]

Tommi Schmitt and Felix Lobrecht published a pop song under the name of Die Sacknähte titled Unten kommt die Gurke rein (El Arenal) in cooperation with Ikke Hüftgold. The lyric „Malle ist nur einmal im Jahr, außer man fährt öfters“ is based off of episode 162 of the podcast.[11] The single reached rank 48 of the German music charts.[12]

Reception[edit]

Influence

Gemischtes Hack has about 1.1 million weekly listeners and is among the most successful German-speaking Podcasts, alongside Fest & Flauschig by Jan Böhmermann and Olli Schulz.[13] In Spotify's annual top charts of 2019, Gemischtes Hack placed on the 3rd spot of the most streamed podcasts worldwide. In Germany it ranked number one.[14]

Some of the actions of Gemischtes Hack receive a great response on social media, such as the ironic hashtag #unsereweiber, which the two artists use to express solidarity with the German women's national football team and, at the same time, condemn sexism towards women's sports. ARD Sportschau picked up the podcast's action and female players of the team shared the hashtag. The two artists commented on their hashtag action as part of the Sportschau.[15] Several active fan accounts exist on the social media platform Instagram, which, for example, collect and upload lifehacks from the episodes,[16] create painted episode summaries[17] or upload quotes and to enable searching for an episode.[18]

Critical Response

Janina Lambrich from Puls says that Gemischtes Hack balances flat gags with serious and current topics. Moreover, the two "can not only be funny, but also take a very clear position on more serious topics, such as meat consumption by Germans or any form of extremism."[19] The executive editor of the magazine Stern, Lena Steeg says that with contrasting biographies, the two presenters discuss current issues and "strike a note that is missed by many in the rest of the media landscape."[20] Toni Lukic from Watson concludes that it is a miracle that Tommi Schmitt and Felix Lobrecht found each other. What they have in common, however, is dark humor. He sees in Gemischtes Hack the "conversation of two guys who push each other to intellectual heights in their theories and squeeze the funny out of every corner of life, no matter how small."[21]

Awards

It was only in 2020 that a podcast was first honored with an official award in Germany. Gemischtes Hack won the German Podcast Award in the category Audience Award [22] as well as Best Comedy Podcaster at the German Comedy award in 2020[23]. Moreover, they won the Comedy-Crown of German pop radio station 1LIVE's first Live Crown awards in the same year [24]. In 2021, the audience once again rewarded Gemischtes Hack with the German Podcast Award in the category Best Entertainment [25] as well as with the German comedy award 2021 in the category Best Comedy Podcast[26] .

Some of the actions of Gemischtes Hack receive a great response on social media, such as the ironic hashtag #unsereweiber, with which the two artists express solidarity with the German women's national football team and ,at the same time, condemn sexism towards women's sports. ARD Sportschau picked up the podcast's action and female players of the team shared the hashtag. The two artists commented on their hashtag action as part of the Sportschau.[14]

Several active fan accounts exist on the social media platform Instagram, which, for example, collect and upload lifehacks from the episodes,[15] create painted episode summaries[16] or upload quotes and enable episode search.[17]

Janina Lambrich von Puls sagt, bei Gemischtes Hack halten sich platte Gags sowie ernste und aktuelle Themen die Waage. Zudem können die beiden „nicht nur witzig sein, sondern beziehen bei ernsteren Themen, wie zum Beispiel dem Fleischkonsum der Deutschen oder jeglichem Extremismus, ganz klar Stellung“.[18] Lena Steeg von Stern meint, die beiden Moderatoren mit ihren gegensätzlichen Biographien erörtern aktuelle Themen und „treffen dabei einen Ton, den viele in der restlichen Medienlandschaft vermissen“.[19] Toni Lukic von Watson urteilt, es sei ein Wunder, dass sich Tommi Schmitt und Felix Lobrecht gefunden haben. Section 14 : Auszeichnungen[edit]

Gemischtes Hack ist eine deutschsprachige Comedyshow von Autor und Moderator Tommi Schmitt zusammen mit Comedian Felix Lobrecht, die als wöchentlicher Podcast beim Streaminganbieter Spotify erscheint. Sie gilt als erfolgreichster Podcast im deutschsprachigen Raum und war 2020 der einzige nicht-englischsprachige in den weltweiten Podcast-Top-10 von Spotify.[28]

Geschichte[edit]

Die erste Folge von Gemischtes Hack wurde am 27. September 2017 über den Online-Musikdienst SoundCloud veröffentlicht. Der Titel des Podcasts stand zum Zeitpunkt der Aufnahme der ersten Folge noch nicht fest. Neben Gemischtes stand auch der Name Halb/Halb im Raum. Beide Titel sollen zum Ausdruck bringen, dass der Podcast eine Zusammenarbeit der Moderatoren darstellt, in der beide Partner durch die Eigenheiten ihrer Biographie zum Charakter des Podcasts beitragen.[29] Später wurde der Titel Gemischtes um die englische Bedeutung des Wortes „hack“ erweitert, indem Lifehacks eine wesentliche Komponente des Podcasts wurden. Diese stammen entweder von Tommi Schmitt, Felix Lobrecht oder der Community von Gemischtes Hack.

Nach Veröffentlichung der ersten Folge waren beide Moderatoren von der positiven Resonanz überrascht.[30] Die Zahl der regelmäßigen Hörer stieg stetig und machte Gemischtes Hack zum zeitweise meistgehörten deutschsprachigen Podcast.[31] Seit September 2019 hält der Streaming-Dienst Spotify die Exklusivrechte am Podcast.[32]

Inhalt[edit]

Lobrecht beginnt jede Folge mit einem Rapzitat, das teilweise aktuelle Relevanz hat oder eine Brücke zu den Themen des Podcasts schlägt. Die Folge #74 ICH BRAUCH NE GUN ist insofern eine Ausnahme, als Lena Meyer-Landrut ein ironisch-despektierliches Rapzitat über sich selbst vorliest, das von dem Künstler Tarek von K.I.Z stammt.[6]

Die Episoden stellen stets einen Dialog der beiden Künstler dar und folgen, abgesehen von einigen regelmäßigen Rubriken, keinem festen Schema. Vielmehr erzählen Schmitt und Lobrecht Anekdoten aus ihrer Vergangenheit und ihrem beruflichen Alltag. Der Humor ergibt sich häufig aus den Biografien der beiden Moderatoren. Während Lobrecht seine Kindheit und Jugend in Berlin-Gropiusstadt verbrachte, wuchs Schmitt als Sohn eines Arztes im Kreis Lippe auf. Die jeweilige Sozialisierung der beiden ist häufig Thema des Podcasts und Gegenstand der Witze.[33]

Die einzige Rubrik, die in nahezu allen Folgen vorkommt, ist Fünf schnelle Fragen (an …). Seit April 2020 wird diese Rubrik in einem wöchentlichen Interview-Format mit wechselnden Gästen weitergeführt.[34] Gäste der ersten Staffel dieses Formates waren Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim, Mats Hummels, der Social Entrepreneur Simon Böhnlein, Juju, Christian Ulmen sowie Linda Zervakis. Gäste der zweiten Staffel waren RIN, Sara Nuru, Luisa Neubauer, Hassan Akkouch, $ick und Raul Krauthausen.

Im Laufe des Formats hat sich zudem verankert, dass die beiden, in Anspielung auf den Podcast-Titel, Lifehacks teilen, die entweder von ihnen oder aus der Community stammen, mit der sie über Twitter und Instagram kommunizieren. Manche Kategorien wie das Erfolgserlebnis und der Fail der Woche wurden im weiteren Verlauf wieder aus dem regelmäßigen Programm einer Folge genommen und werden nur noch unregelmäßig behandelt.

Im November 2021 veröffentlichten Lobrecht und Schmitt, als fiktives Ballermann-Duo Die Sacknähte, zusammen mit Ikke Hüftgold, den Song Unten kommt die Gurke rein, welcher auf Tonspuren der Folge #162 SEX-CORONA basiert. Die Einnahmen aus der Veröffentlichung sollen für die Seenotrettung im Mittelmeer gespendet werden.[35]

Running Gags[edit]

  • Lobrecht erzählt, er habe in Marburg Politikwissenschaft studiert, was die wenigsten wüssten.
  • Die letzten Worte der Sendung werden Schmitt von Lobrecht zugesprochen, das tatsächlich letzte Wort ist meistens dann doch von Lobrecht.
  • Lobrecht nimmt Bezug auf ein "Bit", eine thematische Einheit in einem "Set" des Stand-Up-Comedians Louis C.K.
  • der Kindheitsfreund, welcher nicht mehr gegrüßt wurde, da Schmitt zu cool geworden ist

  • Felix bewertet Aussagen mit dem Namen des Sprechers des Bundesinnenministers Horst Seehofer, Steve Alter. Hintergrund ist die Assoziation des Vornamens mit der sich anschließend in der Jugendsprache als Beleidigung bzw. Anrede angesehenen Ergänzung „Alter“. „Steve, Alter“ wird damit zur Redewendung einer humoristischen Nachfrage.
  • Alle Deutschen der Altersgruppe der über 45-Jährigen werden kategorisch als „Ingos und Monis“ bezeichnet.
  • Als „Dinge, die andauernd sind“ bezeichnen Felix und Tommi die Ergebnisse, die eigentlich sehr selten sind und als Übersetzung dargestellt werden.
  • Als „Dinge, die irgendwie rechts sind“ bezeichnen Felix und Tommi Verhaltensweisen, die nicht per se politisch rechts einzuordnen sind, jedoch häufig damit assoziiert werden bzw. ihrer Meinung nach so wirken.

Einige Aktionen von Gemischtes Hack erfahren große Resonanz in den sozialen Netzwerken, wie etwa der ironische Hashtag #unsereweiber, mit dem die beiden Künstler Solidarität mit der Deutschen Fußballnationalmannschaft der Frauen bekunden und Sexismus gegenüber dem Frauensport verurteilen. Die ARD Sportschau griff die Aktion des Podcasts auf und Spielerinnen der Mannschaft teilten den Hashtag. Im Rahmen der Sportschau äußerten sich die beiden Künstler zu ihrer Hashtag-Aktion.[40]
