Family background[edit]

Olalekan Rahim Abari is the 6th child of Taofiq Olanrewaju Abari and  3rd Generation descendant of Sheikh Muhammed ABARI of Epetedo, Lagos..[1] Sheikh Muhammed Abari was a Muslim scholar from a Royal family who had migrated from his native Dikwa in Maiduguri, Borno state to Lagos in the middle of the 19th Century. His fame and teachings spread so rapidly thus before long he became an Alfa and spiritual adviser to the then Oba of Lagos (King Kosoko ).[2] His function and his role were well defined i.e. preparing the King spiritually for any war engagement.

Sheikh Muhammad Abari’s loyalty to King Kosoko soon ensured he was embroiled in the battle for the throne between Kosoko and Akintoye. King Kosoko was to be later dethroned and exiled to Epe, a waterside town, in the present day Lagos State[3]. Whilst in exile, Kosoko continued to surround himself with his lieutenants whom included Chief Oshodi Tapa, Chief Ajagun, Chief Osho-Anifowoshe, Chief Alayaki, Chief Mogaji, Chief Dosunmu Ajiweforisha and Sheikh Muhammed Abari. After some years, pressure was mounted on King Akitoye to forgive his brother. He yielded and king Kosoko and his lieutenants returned to Lagos. On his return, King Kosoko settled at Ereko and was conferred with the title Oloja of Lagos. Kosoko in appreciation of his lieutenants' solidarity and loyalty especially during his exile at Epe compensated them with landed property. The large area of land on which they settled is now known as Epetedo (the land occupied by Epe returnees)[4]. The land given to Sheikh Muhammed Abari is the part of Epetedo as it is known today. On his land, Sheikh Abari built Abari court[5] and the popular Abari Cemetery [6]amongst other Landmark Abari sites in the Lagos Island area.

Sheikh Muhammed Abari had 12 children, one of whom was Kelani Kadiri Abari, Who was Olalekan Rahim Abari’s Grandfather.
