Early career

[edit]

Seth has an LLB from the University of Western Ontario and a Masters in Law (LLM) from Osgoode Hall. Early in her career, she worked as a lawyer in Toronto. She then worked in strategic and corporate communications in the UK and Canada for 10 years, with clients such as The British Council, Hewlett Packard, HSBC, and Factiva. She founded 7 Step Communications, a virtual PR agency.

Current projects

[edit]

She founded MomShift, a project about women who manage to combine being a mom with career success. She wrote The MomShift: Women Share Their Stories of Career Success After Having Children (Random House, 2014) In an article about MomShift for the Calgary Herald, Seth notes that "...like so many young mothers in North America today, was brought up to want it all: a happy family and a satisfying career." Her book argues that the "...tension between career and family ...has intensified.” [1]

Her earlier book is First Comes Marriage: Modern Relationship Advice From the Wisdom of Arranged Marriages (Simon & Schuster, June 2008), which explored how the old traditions of arranged marriages can guide modern marriages to happiness. A 2012 Atlantic article refers to Seth's book First Comes Marriage..., and notes that in an arranged marriage, "both people come into the relationship with a sense that this is forever", rather than "constantly asking ourselves: Could I do better? Would someone else make me happier?"[2] In a 2008 Globe and Mail interview with Seth about the book, Seth says "...women should seek the inverse of what Hollywood and the culture in general dictate they should expect..."[3]

The Daily Mail calls First Comes Marriage..." a "controversial new book [that] argues that love and attraction are the last things to consider when you want to get married". [4]Seth states that the most important things in a marriage are a list of "'must haves' she'd drawn up as non-negotiable in her search for a suitable life partner." [5]Seth argues that the "principles behind the Asian tradition of marriages, ...can be adapted by Western women to protect themselves against the pitfalls of modern romance and the misery of divorce."[6]

First Comes Marriage.... was "featured on 20/20, CBS: Sunday Morning, CTV’s Canada a.m., The Steven & Chris Show, the Huffington Post, Redbook Magazine, Readers Digest, The Times (UK), The Daily Mail (UK), The Times (India); The Globe and Mail (Canada); The National Post (Canada); The Christian Science Monitor as well as numerous national and local radio shows and blogs."[7]

She writes blogs for the Huffington Post.[8]Most recently, Seth "has been the lead writer for the online project, “The Cities of Migration” which is focused local initiatives that create positive benefits from immigration."[9] Her writing examines "social trends and cultural norms" regarding "shifting pattern of careers." [10]She is on the board of the Trudeau Center for Peace and Conflict Studies and the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto.

She lives in Toronto with her husband and three sons.

2014 allegations

[edit]

Seth was one of nine women who went to the media in October 2014 to make allegations of abuse from former CBC radio host Jian Ghomeshi. Seth went on the record with abuse allegations against Ghomeshi.[11] As of October 30, Ghomeshi is not under police investigation relating to the allegations, however the CBC announced that they would hire a third party to conduct an investigation.[12] Ghomeshi's lawyer has said his client "does not engage in non-consensual role play or sex and any suggestion of the contrary is defamatory."[13]
