David Rutherford Dow (1887 – 1979) was a British physician and academic. He is most notable for his tenure as the first Master of Queen's College of St Andrews University from 1954-1958, the predecessor institution of the University of Dundee.

Early life

Dow was born in Crail, Fife on the east coast of Scotland in 1887. His father was the GP and medical officer in Crail. Dow studied at Waid Academy in Anstruther before enrolling in St Andrews University, he graduated with a degree in medicine in 1911.

Career

After graduation Dow worked as a surgeon in Dundee Royal Infirmary and later at the Hospital for Sick Children in London. He also acted as surgeon aboard the ocean liner RMS Mauretania.
