Billy Seamon

In teams-of-four competition at the highest level, Seamon played for the Bermuda Bowl on the 1957 United States team, defeated by Italy. In the Bermuda Bowl series, which was then annual, it was the last head-to-head match between representatives of North America and Europe and the first of ten consecutive Bermuda Bowl wins by the Blue Team. Seamon played as the partner of Helen Sobel, Peter Leventritt, and finally Boris Koytchou.

As of 1966–1967, he wrote a newspaper bridge column, "Miami News by William Seamon". A death notice in the Orlando Sentinel credits him with a syndicated bridge column.

books and articles - which first? articles published where?

David Marlowe 1947 - we should know more, especially if this was a break preceding an established reputation from articles

1948 Christopher Johnson LCCN 56-8163 --"2nd ed." is my inference from this LCCat record and our previous listing 1947 David Marlowe

no LCCN[edit]

2014-06-11, among the 92 biogs (95 pages in cat), there are seven I did not find at VIAF as identified by any cooperating authority ("No, May 2014") and seven more whom I did not find identified by LC (no LCCN). Thus the first seven do not carry footer template {{Authority control}} and the second seven have the template without the WorldCat and LCCN links. All 14 lack the convenient point of entry to LC Catalog(ue) listings {{LCAuth}}.

WorldCat does have top pages for some "authors" not identified by LC, perhaps not by any authority, but I don't know how to find them (and they may be less reliable).

BOLS Bridge Tips[edit]

OEB7 19 is ignorant of 1994 and 1995

  1. Bridge Ace: BOLS Bridge Tips
  2. Harold Schogger: BOLS Expert Tips
  • Bridge tips by world masters: Terence Reese develops and enlarges the famous Bols bridge tips, Reese (London: Robert Hale, 1980), 174 pp. OCLC 9953239
  • Bols bridgetips 1987-1990, André Boekhorst (Rijswijk: Elmar, 1991), 149 pp. OCLC 65662599
  • The second BOLS book of bridge tips, compiled by André Boekhorst, edited and introduced by Derek Rimington (Robert Hale, 1993), 183 pp.

OCLC 60108825

Talk:Bobby Wolff#BOLS bridge tip(s)

DHTruscott 1 @Bridge Ace; DHTruscott 2 @Harold Schogger citing IBPA permission.
After reading all of DHTruscott1 and DHTruscott2 linked above, two versions of the tip by Dorothy Hayden Truscott (1976), I see that the second is from a collection by Terence Reese, who is certainly the writer of the commentary that follows the tip (" Dormer and I once proposed yet another scheme of this nature ...").
I suppose the print source is Bridge Tips by World Masters: Terence Reese develops and enlarges the famous Bols bridge tips (Hale, 1980; 1987) --so identified at Terence Reese bibliography.
The tip itself, version 1—Reese?, is presented in third person with British English spelling, without mention of the original sponsor BOLS.
  • "there has been a serious gap in signalling methods available to the defenders. Her tip, a modification of a suggestion by T.R.H.Lyons, of England, is an attempt to fill that gap."
  • "in all that time there has been a serious gap in the signaling methods available to the defenders. My BOLS tip, a modification of a suggestion by T. R. H. Lyons of England, is an attempt to fill that gap.
Two book titles attributed to British bridge expert Sally Brock plausibly and certainly fit the BOLS tips.
  • Bridge Tips, 1998, 166 pp.
  • The Complete Book of BOLS Bridge Tips, ed. Sally Brock --Goodreads: Sally Brock gives dates 1997, 178pp. ppb and 2011, 418pp. Kindle; publisher Master Point Press of Toronto.
"For the first time ever, the entire collection of BOLS Bridge Tips are gathered here in one volume, edited and organized for easy access by the average player. Included too are biographies and photographs of all the contributors."
I wonder whether our second source --whose biographical prefaces are trivial to minimal Stubs-- is copied from one of these Brock/Master Point editions.

Steen Møller, 1987 winner. No commentary (too late for Reese). Differ only by Schogger extension of the preface "He is married to Kirsten who won the World Teams Olympiad in 1988 and has represented Denmark internationally more than any other woman."

"International record for Steen". World Bridge Federation.
"International record for Kirsten". World Bridge Federation.

Jean Besse, 1994 winner. identical "Jean Besse of Geneva died in 1995 aged 81. ..."
Jean Besse, 1975 winner. Schogger gives lengthy preface including:

"In 1954 Besse, and the legendary Karl Schneider, were enlisted by the French, winners of the European that year, to represent Europe against the U.S.A in the Bermuda Bowl. The experiment was a mixed success and since then Europe has always been represented by a complete team from the winning country."

"The selection process for the International Olympic Committee's Grand Prix immediately preceding the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in February was complicated by the fact that there are two bridge organizations in North America. One is the American Contract Bridge League and the other is the smaller American Bridge Association, which was founded in 1932 by African-American players at a time they were barred from many competitions."
