work on a list of Former names of United States counties

Here are the mere name changes for counties (and county-equivalents) in the decennial US Census reports of 1870 and 1880, reported in footnotes to the tables of aggregate population by county. Those tables are historical, covering all censuses 1790 to date, one in each column. Former counties including most former names of current counties are represented by rows with null population counts in the current column.

The mere name changes occurred within one state or state-equivalent. Other county name changes may have occurred with transfers of territory from one state to another, or creation of a new state. They are not listed here.
