Wolverine[edit]

Discussion[edit]

Following the third episode of X-Men '97—"Fire Made Flesh"—it was speculated that Morph's feelings for Wolverine weren't platonic. When Madelyne, as the Goblin Queen under Sinister's influence, causes the X-Men to experience various hallucinations, Morph sees Wolverine naked in the showers and plaufully asks if he wants them to join him.[1] Wolverine's apparition criticizes Morph's constant joking, "as if I [Wolverine] don't know. As if we all don't know".[2] Comic Book Resources' Andrew Gladman argued that while this could be referring to Morph's trauma from Sinister's experiments, it could also be interpreted as inferring to their romantic feelings for Wolverine.[2]

After the first season's finale, DeMayo confirmed that Morph's feelings for Wolverine romantic and that they were using Jean's form as "a shield".[3] According to DeMayo, Morph taking on Jean's form was both for the character to confess their own feelings to Wolverine, and also to convince him that he had something to live for; given Wolverine's own romantic feelings for Jean.[4] DeMayo also clarified that Morph took Jean's form because they are afraid of being honest about their feelings with Wolverine and haven't fully accepted that they are in love with him yet;[4] DeMayo also stated that Wolverine is unaware of Morph's romantic feelings for him.[3]

Reception[edit]

Andrew Gladman of Comic Book Resources praised the series for highlighting Morph's friendship with Wolverine, lamenting that the original series didn't show it often.[2]

Collider's Cameryn Barnett, although praising the depiction of Morph as non-binary, argued that the show's first season didn't explore this part of their identity enough.

Barnett criticized Morph's role during X-Men '97's first season, arguing that the series didn't adequately utilize their past history with Sinister; Barnett also argued that as the only X-Man to have been killed by the Sentinels, they should have been more heavily involved following the Sentinel attack on Genosha.
