The Defence Academy Royal Brunei Armed Forces (DA RBAF), natively known as Akademi Pertahanan Angkatan Tentera Diraja Brunei (AP ABDB),[5] is a military academy establishment of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF), primarily for commissioned male and female professional training.

Background[edit]

The Defence Academy of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (DA RBAF) has continued to grow. It is located in a newly constructed building with specific goals, which should be finished by May 2013. This 150 acres (61 ha) contemporary facility near Kampong Tanah Jambu would have the newest instructional aids and technologies available. Combining the latest instructional techniques with futuristic design. With its three pillars—the Officer Cadet School (OCS), the Junior Staff Course (JSC), and the Staff College—the Defence Academy's primary responsibility is the professional development of officers in the RBAF.[6]

History[edit]

The first pillar of the defence academy, Officer Cadet School (OCS), was built with an Army Wing, a Midshipman Wing, an Air Force Wing, and a School Headquarters. Construction on the project started in 2007.[7] It opened on 31 August 2008, in line with the RBAF's objective of producing the next generation of officers who possess leadership abilities.[8] On 25 November 2010, the Defence Academy was formally established and its second pillar, the Staff College, was opened.[9]

On 28 July 2011, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah gave his approval for the Defence Academy of the nation to have its own campus in order to meet the growing demand for military training. At the parade square of the RBAF Officer Cadet School at Sungai Akar Camp, during the Sovereign's Parade Ceremony for the 5th Intake of Officer Cadets, His Majesty made the following statement:[10]

The Leadership and Management Centre, the academy's last and third component, was formally founded on 12 September 2011.[11] The Defence Academy Royal Brunei Armed Forces (DA RBAF) opened its doors on 28 April 2016.[12]

Organisation[edit]

Officer Cadet School[edit]

One of the primary objectives of the OCS, which is housed in the Gurkha Reserve Unit (GRU) camp in Sungai Akar, is to teach men and women who have been chosen to become future RBAF officers in the Tri-Service of the Royal Brunei Land Force (RBLF), Royal Brunei Navy (RBN), and Royal Brunei Air Force (RBAirF) in compliance with the demands and specifications. There are three terms in the 42-week officer cadet course: a 14-week Tri–Service term, a 22-week Special to Service term, and a 6-week Final term. Army cadets, midshipmen, and air force cadets move to their separate units to finish their training to become army, navy, and air force officers after completing the Tri-Service general training term together.[10][7]

Junior Staff Course[edit]

In order to ease promotions for younger officers—specifically, lieutenants to the rank of captain—the Junior Staff Course (JSC) was first administered in 2005. It moved to the School of Studies of the Training Institute Royal Brunei Armed Forces (TI RBAF) in September 2008 from its original location in the Civil Service Institute in Kampong Rimba. At the moment, the Military Academy in Sungai Akar hosts the course. The JSC provides courses in geopolitics, military studies, international relations, defence policy, leadership, and communications. The training helps military people become more proficient in information and communications technology (ICT) while also improving their managerial, analytical, and leadership abilities. Captains must pass their exams at this educational facility in order to advance to the rank of major. By the time of the seventh intake, officers from all RBAF services as well as those from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore had joined the JSC.[10]

Staff College[edit]

The Command and Staff Course (CSC) is offered by the Staff College to senior majors in a tri–service setting in collaboration with officers from Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF), the RBAF, and other regional security organisations. The course attracts students from all over the world, including Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, UK, Pakistan, Oman, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, and the USA, in addition to the regional ASEAN partners of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam.[9] The college is taught by professionals from Brunei, the United Kingdom, Singapore, and New Zealand.[6] The Staff College would produce graduates of the CSC who have trained both domestically and overseas for the first time in their history.[10]

The goal of the CSC is to broaden professional and scholarly understanding of the modern strategic environment and how it affects defense and security experts in their line of work. As its principal academic provider, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) collaborates with the delivery of the 40-week course. Upon completion of the program, accomplished learners will receive the UBD Graduate Diploma in Defence and Security Studies, along with the chance to work toward a Master's degree in the same field.[9]

Academic instruction for this genuinely global course is provided by Massey University in New Zealand. The training promotes lateral thinking and a wider perspective among its participants. The agreement, which started in 2010, enables the RBAF Command and Staff College to provide a customised Master of International Security program. The relationship between the Centre for Defence and Security Studies and the RBAF is centered upon the goal of providing students with fresh knowledge and perspectives.[13]

List of commandants[edit]

The first commanding officer (CO), initially a loan service officer from the United Kingdom, served from 1969 to 1970, with a second British officer from 1970 to 1973. From then on, subsequent appointments have all been held by Bruneian officers; Major Mohammad bin Daud became the first Brunei officer in charge from June 1973 to June 1974; with a second appointment concurrent with his promotion to Lieutenant Colonel. The Training Institute was housed in Bolkiah Camp for seventeen years, from 1969 to 1986. Officers selected to head the Training Institute at Bolkiah Camp:[14][15]
