In The X Factor (UK) there are 4 categories (in the first 3 series there were 3), each category is mentored by one of the judges. The current judges are Simon Cowell, Dannii Minogue, Louis Walsh and Cheryl Cole. The four current categories are called "Over 25's" (solo artists who are over the age of 25), "Groups" (For acts who have more than one member), "Boys" (Solo Male artists who are between the ages of 14 and 24) and "Girls" (Solo Female artists who are between the ages of 14 and 24).

Series 1[edit]
- In series 1 the age limit was anything above 16.
- Categories were called Groups, Under 25s and Over 25s
- Under 25s were mentored by Sharon Osbourne
- Over 25s were mentored by Simon Cowell
- Groups were mentored by Louis Walsh
- 3rd: The Under 25s were first to be completely knocked
- 2nd: The Groups came second
- 1st: The Over 25s won with Steve Brookstein
Series 2[edit]
- In series 2 the age limit was anything above 16.
- Categories were called Groups, 16-24s and 25 and Overs (this is because the name of Over and Under 25s sounded like anyone who is 25 is not aloud to enter.
- 16-24s were mentored by Louis Walsh
- 25 and Overs were mentored by Sharon Osbourne
- Groups were mentored by Simon Cowell
- 3rd: The Groups were first to be completely knocked
- 2nd: The 25 and Overs came second
- 1st: The 16-24s won with Shayne Ward
Series 3[edit]
- In series 3 the age limit was anything above 16.
- Categories were called Groups, 16-24s and 25+
- 16-24s were mentored by Simon Cowell
- 25+ were mentored by Sharon Osbourne
- Groups were mentored by Louis Walsh
- 3rd: The Groups were first to be completely knocked
- 2nd: The 25 and Overs came second
- 1st: The 16-24s won with Leona Lewis (runner-up Ray Quinn was also in the 16-24s category)
Series 4[edit]
- In series 4 the age limit was lowered down to 14. Also, new judge Dannii Minogue joined the panel
- Categories were called Groups, Girls, Boys and 25 and Overs
- Girls were mentored by Sharon Osbourne
- Boys were mentored by Dannii Minogue
- Over 25s were mentored by Louis Walsh
- Groups were mentored by Simon Cowell
- 4th: The Girls this year was the earliest that any category had been completely wiped out
- 3rd: The Over 25s lost out just in the semi-final
- 2nd: The Groups came second
- 1st: Again both winner and runner-up were in the same category (Boys), but the winner was Leon Jackson
Series 5[edit]
- In series 5 the age limit stayed at 14. But Sharon has left and Girls Aloud member Cheryl Cole steps in
- Categories were the same as last year
- Boys were mentored by Simon Cowell
- Over 25s were mentored by Dannii Minogue
- Groups were mentored by Louis Walsh
- Girls were mentored by Cheryl Cole
- 4th: Over 25s
- 3rd: Boys
- 2nd: Groups
- 1st: Girls
Series 6[edit]
- Categories are the same as last year
- Boys 16-24 were mentored by Cheryl Cole
- Girls 16-24 were mentored by Dannii Minogue
- Groups were mentored by Louis Walsh
- Over 25s were mentored by Simon Cowell
