Lars Johan Brodtkorb (born 14 June 1995) is a Norwegian competitive sailor and chess player, born in Trondheim and grown up in Horten. He started to sail the Optimist dinghy at the age of 9 and qualified to the World Championships in Cesme Turkey in 2008 and in Niteroi Brasil in 2009. In Cesme he finished on 37'th place and in Niteroi he finished on 172'nd place. [1] His best result in a national championship in the Optimist was obtained in the Open German Championship in Ribnitz-Damgarten in Germany in 2008.[2]

In 2009 he started to sail the Europe dinghy and won his first gold-medal in the Junior European Championship in Brest in 2013. He also won in Nieuwpoort in 2014.[3] In the World Championship he has won the gold medal three times (2014, 2015, 2021), the silver medal four times (2013, 2016, 2017, 2018) and bronze medal once (2019).[4] [5]

In 2013 he started to sail the Finn dinghy and won the Norwegian championship in 2014 and 2016 and the silver in 2013 and 2015.[6] [7] [8] [9]

In 2015 he won his first bronze medal in the Finn Silver Cup.[10]

In 2017 he started to sail the OK dinghy for the first time in the European Championship in Fåborg and became the first Norwegian to win the championship.[11]

In 2018 he got the bronze with Abhinav Martha in the Four-player chess Teams World Championship. The year after he won the Teams World Championship with Dmitry Kononenko.[12] In 2020 he defended the title with his former partner Abhinav Martha.[13] However, in 2021 Lars Johan and Abhinav Martha lost the final and got the silver-medal.

He has also won the Four-player chess Solo World Championship in 2019 and 2020.[14]


Awards and honours[edit]

Norwegian sailor of the year 2013.[15] Norwegian youth sailor of the year 2014.[16] He received bragdmerket in 2014 and 2015 for winnning the World Championships in the Europe (dinghy).[15]
