Minecraft, a sandbox video game released by Mojang Studios in 2011, has been continually expanded upon via major updates.[1] According to TheGamer, Minecraft's updates added a "wealth of features and systems" to a "relatively bare-bones game".[2] Windows Central wrote, "When Minecraft is updated, Mojang Studios pours time and effort into every iteration to ensure players' feedback is heard."[3]

The scope of this list includes all major Minecraft updates, on the 2 primary versions of the game: Java Edition (PC: Windows, MacOS, and Linux) and Bedrock Edition (Cross-platform: Windows 10 / 11, Xbox One / Series S / Series X, PlayStation 4 / 5, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS).[4][p.s 1] For Java Edition's pre-release, only the major phases of development are included. For Java Edition's full-release and Bedrock / Pocket Edition's release, each major update, or 1.x updates, are included. For Pocket Edition Alpha, 0.x releases are included. Any snapshots or developmental test versions are excluded. In essence, x.x updates are considered major updates, and included on the list, while x.x.x updates, with a third version number, are considered patches, and excluded.

1.13 1.13.1 and 1.13.2 Update Aquatic 22 July 2018[p.s 5] Update Aquatic served to overhaul the game's oceans.[18] According to TheGamer, the update "marked the first of what many players consider "the new updates" – less frequent, but utterly revolutionary updates focusing intently on one specific part of the game."[1] They placed Update Aquatic as #8 out of 17 on a list of Minecraft's best updates.[1] The key features and additions included in the update were: new fish types (salmon, cod, and tropical fish); pufferfish; dolphins; turtles; coral reefs; kelp; the trident weapon; the Drowned mob; underwater structures (caves, treasure chests, shipwrecks, and ocean ruins); modified water physics; and ocean biomes (e.g. frozen ocean, deep cold ocean, lukewarm ocean, warm ocean, etc.).[18][19][20]
1.14 1.14.1, 1.14.2, 1.14.3, and 1.14.4 Village & Pillage 22 April 2019[p.s 6] Village & Pillage was announced on 29 September 2018, during Minecon Earth 2018.[21] The update served to overhaul Minecraft's village system, with the addition of the Pillager mob.[21][22][23] According to PCGamer, the update was "one of the biggest the game has had."[22] TheGamer ranked the update as #1 out of 17 on a list of best Minecraft updates, stating "no update in Minecraft's history has changed the game as much as 1.14".[1] Key features and mechanics added in the update include: 11 new types of Villagers, the Pillager mob (which enact raids on the villages), the crossbow weapon, villages across multiple biomes, an updated villager trading system, the campfire block, the bell block, cats, pandas, foxes, and bamboo.[21][22][23][p.s 7]
1.15 1.15.1 and 1.15.2 Buzzy Bees 10-11 December 2019[24] The main feature of Buzzy Bees was the introduction of bees, and their accompanying honey blocks, beehives, bee nests, and honeycombs.[25][26] According to TheGamer, "while this update appears small on the surface, in reality, it's anything but".[1] They also noticed that the update fixed many long-standing bugs of the game and ranked it #4 out of 17 on their list of best Minecraft updates.[1] Multiple have called the bees "adorable" or "cute".[24][25][26]
1.16 1.16.1, 1.16.2, 1.16.3, 1.16.4, and 1.16.5 Nether Update 23 June 2020[27] The Nether Update served to improve the Nether, the game's alternate dimension. The update was announced during Minecon 2019, which was held in September 2019.[27] The update added four new biomes to the Nether, Soul Sand Valley, Crimson Forest, Warped Forest and Basalt Deltas.[28] As well, multiple mobs, blocks, and structures were added, including, the Hoglin mob, the Piglin mob, netherite, the ruined portal structure, the bastion remnants structure, soul soil blocks, crying obsidian blocks, and more.[29][27][28] As well, the update included 3 new songs by Lena Raine, "Rubedo", "Chrysopoeia", and "So Below".[30][31] About the songs, Lena stated, "I wanted each piece to feel like a progression of emotions, or a journey from place to place within this other world. There's a degree of beauty to the Nether, but it is also terrifying in both its details and scale."[31]
1.17 1.17.1 Caves & Cliffs: Part I 8 June 2021[32] Caves & Cliffs was first announced during Minecraft Live 2020 (previously known as Minecon), which was held in October 2020.[33] Originally, Caves & Cliffs was meant to be released as a single update, but on 14 April 2021, Mojang decided to delay the update, and split it into two.[33][34] According to a statement by Mojang on the game's website, the update was split to prevent compromising "quality, reliability, or functionality for players".[p.s 8] As well, they called it their "most ambitious update to date".[p.s 8] On a list by TheGamer on the best Minecraft updates, Caves & Cliffs: Part I ranked at #5 out of 17. About the update, they stated, "Caves and Cliff's Part I's strong reception is a testament to its quality in spite of its circumstances."[1]

The key features and additions in Caves & Cliffs: Part I included: goats, axolotls, copper (including copper ore and copper blocks), the glow squid mob, deepslate blocks, and a new multiplayer sleeping rule.[32][33]

1.18 1.18.1 and 1.18.2[35] Caves & Cliffs: Part II 30 November 2021[36] Caves & Cliffs: Part II included the features planned for Caves & Cliffs that were not included in Part I,[36] with the exception of the warden mob and the deep dark biome, which were delayed to The Wild Update.[36][37] There were multiple changes to world generation in Caves & Cliffs: Part II, including new shapes of caves ("cheese", "spaghetti", and "noodle" caves); cave biomes, like lush caves and dripstone caves; and an increase to the map's world height, allowing players to dig 64 blocks lower than previously allotted from the map's size.[36][38][39] As well, the height range of the game's mountains were increased, allowing them to generate taller.[38] New mountain biomes were also added, for example, Mountain Meadow, Mountain Grove, Snowy Slopes and more.[38][39]
1.19 TBD The Wild Update TBA As of March 2022, The Wild Update has no confirmed release date, but is to be released during 2022.[37][40] The key features and additions in the update include: the mangrove biome (including mangrove trees), mud blocks, frogs, tadpoles, fireflies, and the Allay mob.[37][40] Information about the update was revealed during Minecraft Live 2021.[37]

Pocket Edition was merged into Bedrock Edition upon its discontinuation.[41] The first version of Pocket Edition was first shown during a demo for the Xperia Play at E3 2011.[42][43] The demo was created in 3 months by a single programmer.[p.s 9] Pocket Edition was released to Android on 29 September 2011,[42] and iOS in November 2011.[44] Windows 10 support began after update v0.12.0 (2015),[45] and Apple TV support began with the Ender Update (2016).[46]
