The suburb is mainly residental and there has been a lot of recent residental projects along Warringah Road. There are many schools in and nearby Forestville. The nearby high school is Killarney Heights High School but there are other high schools nearby such as Forest High School which is near to Frenchs Forest and Davidson High School which is located in Davidson. Local businesses thrive in the recently redeveloped local shopping centre and nearby Forestway shopping centre. Flora and fauna thrive in nearby national parks such as Davidson National Park and Garigal National Park. Sporting facilities in Forestville include sporting fields and netball courts which local teams such as Forest Killarney Soccer Club, Forest Killarney Netball Club and Forest Rugby Club call home ground. There is a Returned Services League Centre nearby called The Forest Club. The suburb is in the Warringah Federal Electorate and the electorate generally is a safe Liberal Party seat, as is common in Northern parts of Sydney. Forestville is home to the Federal MP for Warringah, Tony Abbott.

In the 2001 Australian Bureau of Statistics Census of Population and Housing, the population of Forestville was 7510 people, in an area of 4.8 square kilometres. The population was 51.5% females, 48.5% males. 27.8% of the population was born overseas (see chart for a breakdown of ancestry). The eight strongest religious affiliations in the area were in descending order: Anglican, Catholic, No religion, Uniting Church, Presbyterian and Reformed, Oriental Christian, Orthodox Christian, and Buddhism The three most common forms of dwelling were in decreasing order: a separate house; a flat, unit or apartment; a semi-detached, row or terrace house, or townhouse.

Transport[edit]
In the 2001 census, for people travelling to work using just one method of transportation from Forestville, 77% travelled in a car as the driver, 9.5% took the bus, 6.7% travelled in a car as passenger, 2.1% walked, 2.0% travelled by truck, 1.0% travelled by motorbike or motor scooter, and 0.5% travelled by bicycle. Forestville straddles Warringah Road - a major traffic artery between Sydney and the Northern Beaches, and is close to Wakehurst Parkway and Forest Way. All these roads are quite congested in peak hour.
Forestville is poorly served by public transport. Public transport is limited to a private bus service run by Forest Coach Lines. This provides services to Chatswood and Warringah Mall, as well as peak hour services to the Sydney CBD.

For federal elections, Forestville in the safe Liberal electoral division of Warringah. This seat is currently held by Tony Abbott, of the Liberal Party, and he was last re-elected in the 2004 elections. The seat has been held continuously by conservatives since the seat was created in 1922 (by the Liberal Party since the party was formed in 1945).
For NSW state elections, Forestville is split, roughly equally, between the Electoral district of Davidson, currently held by Andrew Humpherson and Electoral district of Wakehurst, currently held by Brad Hazzard. Both sitting members belong to the Liberal Party.
