Nathan Hale Arts Magnet School (Connecticut) is a K-5 magnet school in the New London School District in New London, CT[1].
History
[edit]Nathan Hale and the original schoolhouse
[edit]The rich history of the Nathan Hale school began when Nathan Hale begun teaching at the then-called Union School in 1774[2][3]. Hale only taught at this school until 1775, when the Revolutionary War began[2]. This schoolhouse was built in 1773, on the corner of State and Union streets[4].
Nathan Hale Grammar School

In 1891, The Nathan Hale Grammar school was built[5]. In 1951, the Nathan Hale Grammar School closed, sending students to other district schools, such as the Bulkeley School (which was a junior high at the time). The Nathan Hale building became part of the New London High School[6] and later became part of the Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School in 1993[7].
Nathan Hale Elementary School
[edit]In 1970, a new Nathan Hale Elementary School opened at its current address on Beech Street (off of Ocean Avenue, New London)[8].
Nathan Hale Arts Magnet School
[edit]In 2011, Nathan Hale went through a 30.4 million dollar renovation that added about 20,000 square feet to the building[9]. This renovation added a dance studio, two art rooms, two music rooms, and additional rooms aimed to help the school with their new Arts and Technology theme[9]. In 2013, Nathan Hale became the second elementary magnet school in New London, and had a focus on the arts[10].
Magnet Curriculum
[edit]At NHAMS, students get to experience several opportunities that dive into arts such as resourceful community partners, media arts, dance, theater, and music programming.
Enrollment Characteristics
[edit]All of the following demographic tables are using Nathan Hale Arts Magnet enrollment data from the 2021-2022 school year. Other important enrollment characteristics include students who are eligible for free or reduced lunch and gender. For the Nathan Hale Arts Magnet School in the 2021-2022 school year, 301 students were eligible for free lunch (66.6%) and 49 students were eligible for reduced-priced lunch (10.8%)[1]. In the 2021-2022 school year, 212 students enrolled in Nathan Hale were male (46.9%) and 240 were female (53.1%)[1].
