The rich history of the Nathan Hale school began when Nathan Hale begun teaching at the then-called Union School in 1774[2][3]. Hale only taught at this school until 1775, when the Revolutionary War began[2]. This schoolhouse was built in 1773, on the corner of State and Union streets[4].

In 1951, the Nathan Hale Grammar School closed, sending students to other district schools, such as the Bulkeley School (which was a junior high at the time). The Nathan Hale building became part of the New London High School[6] and later became part of the Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School in 1993[7].

In 2011, Nathan Hale went through a 30.4 million dollar renovation that added about 20,000 square feet to the building[9]. This renovation added a dance studio, two art rooms, two music rooms, and additional rooms aimed to help the school with their new Arts and Technology theme[9]. In 2013, Nathan Hale became the second elementary magnet school in New London, and had a focus on the arts[10].
