Shrimant Pirajirao alias Bapusaheb Ghatge

Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj from the Ghatge family of Kagal was adopted into the Karveer State. His younger brother was Raje Pirajirao alias Bapusaheb Ghatge. He was born on 3rd January 1876. Pirajirao became the head of Kagal state after the elder brother was adopted in Kolhapur state.

Pirajirao was studious and fond of reading since childhood. Pirajirao's father Raje Jaisingrao alias Abasaheb Ghatge was the head of Kagal State. At the same time, he was also the regent of the Kolhapur State, so he paid close attention to the education of both his children.

Animal love

Both Rajarshri Shahu Maharaj and Raje Pirajirao Ghatge were animal lovers. He loved animals and was very fond of jungle safaris. Like their father, both brothers were very fond of keeping horses and dogs.

Work

Administrative Reforms

Raje Pirajirao Ghatge Maharaj did various things in the company of his elder brother Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj in Kagal State. Pirajirao established Kagal and Murgud municipalities in Kagal in 1908 and 1921 respectively. In 1925, he established Shree Shahu High School, in Kolhapur.

Medical Relief

At his time 1224 vaccinations were done under his supervision in Kagal's clinics. He improved the medical facilities in Kagal. During the year, 8388 patients were treated in Kagal's hospital.

academic work

Shrimant Pirajirao aka Bapusaheb Maharaj started Jaisingrao Ghatge Scholarship in memory of his father. Jaisingrao Ghatge Technical School was established during his tenure.

Work in irrigation sector

Pirajirao Maharaj paid much attention to irrigation and many projects were implemented under his guidance. Radhanagari dam on Bhogavati river in Kolhapur district was built under his direct supervision. He had under him 7 men, 14 clerks and a special engineer at Hyderabad deccan and a superintending engineer PWD chief for departmental work. The lake at Murgud was built by the Raje Pirajirao in the year 1922. Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj himself came to inaugurate this lake.

Work for the underprivileged

Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu's work for the untouchables and downtrodden people was greatly supported by Shrimant Pirajirao aka Bapusaheb.

Music and the arts

Music and art received permanent patronage and honor in the Kolhapur state. Many structures required for this were constructed in Kolhapur. One of these halls was built under the supervision of Shrimant Pirajirao Ghatge. The auditorium was renamed as 'Keshavrao Bhosle Natyagruh' after independence.

Science Exhibition

Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj and Shrimant Pirajirao Ghatge, both brothers organized a science exhibition in Kolhapur to promote the scientific approach. This science exhibition was organized at Rajaram Vidyalaya, Kolhapur. The number of visitors to this exhibition was 30000. Shrimant Pirajirao aka Bapusaheb Maharaj worked tirelessly as secretary for this exhibition

Pirajirao Maharaj was blessed with Shrimant Jaisingrao Pirajirao Ghatge, Lilavati alias Akkasaheb, Hindurao alias Babasaheb, Sakharamrao alias Dajisaheb, Yashwantrao alias Appasaheb Nirmalaraje Mohini was known as Akkasaheb.

Elder son Raje Jaysingrao ghatge was head after him.This legacy of social work later succeed by his grandson Raje VikramSinh Ghatge and great grand son Raje Samarjitsinh Ghatge
