Government and History (1990's -> Present)

1990's[edit]

1990 - August 2 - Iraq invades its neighbor, Kuwait, setting into motion the beginning of U.S. involvement in the Gulf War. Four days later, the United Nations begins a global trade embargo against Iraq. On November 29, the United Nations passes a resolution, #678, stating that Iraq must withdraw its forces from Kuwait by January 15, 1991 or face military intervention.

1991 - Before the deadline on January 12- U.S. Congress passes a resolution authorizing the use of force to liberate Kuwait. Operation Desert Storm begins four days later with air strikes against Iraq. Iraq responds by sending eight Scud missiles into Israel. On February 27 - The Gulf War ends one day after Iraq withdraws its forces from Kuwait and sets the oil fields on fire. A cease fire is declared and Iraq accepts the condition of disarmament after one hundred hours of ground fighting. On April 3, the United Nations Security Council passes Resolution 687, calling for the destruction and removal of the entire Iraqi chemical and biological weapons stockpile, plus ballistic missiles with a range greater than 150 kilometers. Iraq also agrees to withdraw its support of international terrorism.

2000's (G.W.Bush Era)[edit]

From 2000- 2008 America had a lot of up and downs whether it was the boom of the internet and financial prosperity, or the horrific terrorist on 9-11, or even the Great Recession in 2008. There were a lot of things that happened from those span of 8 years that really changed the way America is looked at.

2000 - In 2000 the US and world market were booming due the internet rapidly growing. The USS Cole was bombed in Yemen waters.

2001 - Obviously a lot transpired in this year. An Economic growth and tax relief program was put into effect. On September 11th, the terrorists attack when hijackers took control of commercial jets and crashed them into the WTC, the Pentagon and a plane that was crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, that was on its way to the White House. On October 7, Congress agreed and signed the bill on the War of Afghanistan.

2002 - The US officially withdraws from the Anti-Ballistic Treaty. Also the US Homeland security is created.

2003 - On February 1, a tragic accident happened when the space shuttle Colombia exploded in re-entry over Texas. In March the UK, Australia, and the US invade Iraq. On December 13th Saddam Hussein was captured.

2004 - In extremely unimportant news, on February 4, Facebook was created. Probably wasn’t for the better. And George W. Bush was reelected into office for his second term.

2005 - The natural disaster Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast as a category 5 grade Hurricane killing almost 2000 people and dealing a total of $81 billion in damage.

2006 - The Democratic Party gained majority in Congress and Governors of states.

2007 - Nancy Pelosi became the first women to be the speaker of the house. A huge troop surge was ordered to Iraq. On April 16, the Virginia Tech massacre took place, where a South Korean student shot and killed 32 students and professors. Later that year the Great Recession begins to unfold.

2008 - In September the global financial crisis hit with the stock market crashing. Oil prices hit an all-time high in the US as well. The Lehman Brothers Investment Bank files for bankruptcy. On November 4 Barack Obama is elected to office as the 44th president.

2010's (B.H.Obama Era)[edit]

2009 - Barack Obama inaugurated as 44th President; Hillary Clinton becomes Secretary of State; Timothy Geithner becomes new Secretary of Treasury; Obama bans human-cloning and overturns a Bush-era policy that limited federal funding for embryonic stem cell research; Three Somali pirates are killed in a sniper operation authorized by President Obama, freeing Captain Philips and ending a multi-day standoff between the United States Navy and the pirates; Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize.

2010 - Supreme Court rules the First Amendment prohibits restrictions on independent political expenditures by corporations, associations, and union; Incident at SeaWorld Orlando where an employee is killed by a killer whale during a live performance; BP Oil Spill is stopped for the first time, 86 days after oil started leaking into the Gulf of Mexico; Obama signs the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare); Obama declares an end to combat operations in Iraq.

2011 - Obama meets with Chinese President Hu Jintao for a four-day meeting; Obama releases his original birth certificate form admists conspiracy theories; Osama bin Laden is assinated. Obama deploys 100 troops into Uganda to assist with the capture of Joseph Kony, leader of Lord's Resistance Army.

2012 - Obama becomes the first sitting U.S. President to announce support for gay marriage; Obama announces that the U.S. will stop deporting some illegal immigrants; Obama reelected over Republican nominee Mitt Romney; Washington and Colorado become first states to legalize marijuana; The New York Stock Exchange is sold to IntercontinentalExchange.

2013 - American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 signed by Barack Obama to avoid "fiscal cliff"; US stock market undergoes flash crash.

2014 - Thirteen states increase minimum wage (Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington); Obama signs an executive order raising the minimum wage for federal contract workers from $7.25 to $10.10; Obama delays employee mandate for Obamacare for the second time; Obama announces new sanctions targeting Russia's banking and energy sectors over involvement in the Ukraine Crisis and annexing Crimea; Ebola virus crisis; ISIS Militants declare worldwide caliphate; One World Trade Center building in New York City opens.
