From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I am an 18-year-old female college student in her freshman year who is residing in the Pacific Northwest. I am currently working towards a degree in Human Services, as my interests in helping people and giving back correlate with this field. Some things I am passionate about and enjoy are: my education, music, visual media, kickboxing, and spending time with family, friends, and my dog Bella. Kickboxing is a sport I take part in 3 days a week, and have been doing so for over half a year.

Taking my English Composition class has been my first time delving deep into the world of Wikipedia and its seemingly infinite resources, information, and article editors. I am at the beginning stage of being actively involved in Wikipedia, so I am still learning. However, by the end of this class, I am hoping to develop the skills to positively improve articles and possibly start them. Some subjects I am interested in writing about are: famous or lesser-known people I look up to, my home town, and notable musicians I enjoy that may or may not have their own Wikipedia page.

Article Critique

[edit]

Steven Anthony Lawrence is a fairly distinguishable actor, that every viewer of the Disney Channel around the 2000’s will instantly recognize. His most iconic, reoccurring role was his character in the TV series Even Stevens, where he plays a boisterous, irksome side character nick-named “Beans”. I visited the Steven Anthony Lawrence page on Wikipedia, and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: the absence of information and detail, the unnecessary facts despite said vagueness, and the absence of any sources at all.

Lack of Information

[edit]

The article begins with an introduction of two sentences, only noting the actors age and his most famous role. There is no picture available of the actor, and the only information offered is when and where he was born, his occupation and years active, and his height. Following this, the article has four subcategories: Career, Filmography, References, and External Links. The Career category has some information of Stevens career, but ultimately lacks detail and specific descriptions. This entire section lacks flow and natural evolution of thought process. The Filmography category is filled with the most information, text, and detail. It accredits, possibly inaccurately, twenty of his roles from 1996 to 2017, so it can be perceived as current in that aspect. The References section is completely blank, and the External Links category has one link – to his IMDb page.

Unnecessary Facts

[edit]

The Careers section in this article mentions two pieces of information that seem to be separated from the main paragraph. I believe these details to be unnecessary and add little substance to the article. The author states, “In 2013, Lawrence gained media attention on Twitter as one of his portraits served as the avatar for the account of American rapper Tyler, the Creator.”[1] This can be deemed as an irrelevant fact, in comparison to bigger events in Stevens career that occurred around that time, like appearing in Eagleheart and Randy App, to name a few.[2] Following this, the article mentions, “In 2016, the social media app Snapchat added a filter known as "beans genes" allowing users to morph Lawrence's face onto their own.”[3] As aforementioned, this is quite an unimportant fact to mention in a category regarding someone’s career.  A sufficient piece of information for this category would be all the roles Steven has taken since 2017, which is the most current role this article has to offer.

Lack of Sources

[edit]

This article does have a decent amount of text and information, but even with the satisfactory and seemingly reliable details, there are never any sources provided. The References subcategory is empty, and the only links in this article are to other Wikipedia articles and Stevens IMDb page. There are no other citations to prove any claims in the article, meaning that there is a possibility a majority of the content, or all of it, could be false. This is the biggest fault in the entire article, because all of the material provided immediately loses its credibility without a reliable source.

Summary

[edit]

In conclusion, this article has a good foundation and structure, but ultimately needs work and editing. It lacks validity and strength in its facts and could use more detail in every category provided. With some improvements, I believe this article could be an excellent, accurate study of Steven Anthony Lawrence’s life.
