Code4Lib is a volunteer-driven community who largely work for and with technology in libraries, archives and museums. The community was formed in 2003.
History[edit]
Code4Lib started in the fall of 2003 as a mailing list when a group of library programmers decided to create an overarching community agnostic towards any particular language or technology. The community grew out of other efforts such as the Access Conference, web4lib, perl4lib, /usr/lib/info, and oss4lib, which allow technology folks in libraries, archives and museums to informally share approaches, techniques, and code across institutional and project divides. Soon after the mailing list was created, the community setup a #code4lib IRC channel (chat room) on freenode. The first face-to-face meeting was held in 2005 in Chicago, Illinois, USA and the now-annual conference started in 2006 in Corvallis, Oregon, USA, and has continued every year since. Smaller regional meetings have also taken place. A volunteer effort manages an edited online journal that publishes relevant articles from the field.
Code4Lib is dedicated to providing a harassment-free community experience for everyone. In YEAR, the community created an official Code of Conduct.[1]
In 2018, the Code4Lib community approved the Digital Library Federation as the fiscal host for the organization.[2]
The Code4Lib Journal[edit]
The first issue of the Code4Lib Journal (ISSN 1940-5758) was published in 2007 and has published 44 issues[3].
