From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hello everyone. I'm Spiral III, (self-proclaimed) queen regnant of Somewhere. Something like that, anyway. I'm rather new here to Wikipedia, at least as far as being someone interested in actually contributing much to it. I can't remember exactly when I first stumbled upon the Wikipedia, sometime at the dawn of the millennium, randomly popping up in my internet searches. Back then I thought this site was a pile of rubbish (at first I thought it was one of those spam sites cobbled together from random words). Then, a few years ago, I started noticing people linking to the articles. And, by god(s), they were fairly informative (most of the time). Well, after a while, I started using the Wikipedia to do a little scattershot research and just fell in love. This place, and you, my fellow wikipedians, are pretty cool. I'm way too lazy to go and do real research in as many areas of interest as I would like to, and Wikipedia makes learning broad swaths of stuff easy (as long as you've got a good bullshit detector, since you never know when someone's gonna sneak some in there). I'm always a little anxious about putting anything out there on the internet, but after spending a while reading quite a few articles and article talk pages, I've decided to be bold, register an account, and actually make some edits. And as long as my nerve lasts I hope that I can be a decent editor.

So far, most of my edits have been to my userspace, either drafting this greeting or playing around in the sandbox till I felt like I had a good grasp of Wikipedia's markup language and interface (and also tweaking my user CSS; I get really obsessive about screen colors). Right now I am browsing many of Wikipedia's articles relating to computers, both for research and with an eye towards improving them; I am also currently familiarizing myself with other Wikimedia projects to which I hope to contribute (on the whole, I'm actually rather impressed by all of Wikimedia's projects).

Interests and such[edit]

Here on Wikipedia, my interests mostly lie in the oft-opposed subjects of science and religion, as well as history. In particular, I have found the Wikipedia to be a great resource for information on cosmology, geology, evolution, and other subjects having to do with both natural and human history (a very interesting subject for me). I'm also fascinated by mythology, religion, the supernatural and paranormal (like aliens and bigfoot), and crazy conspiracy theories.

I'm also rather interested in linguistics, especially the history of the world's languages and also the various writing systems that have been employed to encode those languages. I only speak English at the moment, but I'd like to learn other languages (Once I started to try learning German, but never really got around to it... Maybe someday).

Aside from that, I also like to study the history of computer technology, both hardware and software (with a particular interest, on the software side, in video games, operating systems, and programming languages). I dabble a bit in computer programming (I'm in the middle of programming a crappy game right now, actually).

Anyway, these are the subject areas you're likely to see me editing articles in.

Availability[edit]

I might log into Wikipedia everyday or go for weeks without even thinking about it, depending on how things in my life are going and where my rapidly shifting attention is placed. So, if you leave me a message and I don't respond for several days, don't hold your breath in anticipation, and perhaps assume I'm on a little wiki-break. However, I shall certainly see to it that I don't lightly depart from your presence shortly after making any major edits or while any discussion threads I've posted in still seem to be active.

e-mail[edit]

Any of you can e-mail me through MediaWiki's e-mail feature. Be warned however, that I probably won't check my e-mail more than once a week (and probably less than that); so, if you need to get in touch with me quickly don't send me an e-mail. If I'm not away from Wikipedia at the moment, I'll see a message on my talk page much faster (and if I am away from Wikipedia, there's little chance of reaching me at all).

Queen Spiral on othe Wikimedia projects[edit]

In addition to my love of Wikipedia, I have an interest in contributing to Wikimedia's other wikis. Here I will link to my user pages on any other projects I contribute to.

Subpages[edit]

Well, I don't suppose anybody cares about my sandbox or the stylesheet I use to view the wikipedia. But, here, for my own convienience, are links to the two subpages of my user page that I've created so far.
