The Electromechanical film (EMFi) is a thin, cell, biaxially situated polypropylene film covered with metal electrodes.

An EMFi has two possible purposes. It can function as an actuator or a sensor. The two basic types that have been manufactured were given the labels O01 (37 μm thick) and HS01 (70 μm thick). The electromechanical coefficient, ks, for O01 is 30 pCN-1 and HS01 has a coefficient of 170 pCN-1. Upon applying an external voltage, the EMFi operates as an actuator and its effectiveness is dependent on variation in thickness and the films motion in an air gap. [1]

An EMFi is charged by using the corona method, which uses two electric fields to surpass the films dielectric capacity. During the charging process using the corona method, there is an occurrence of electric breakdowns in the voids that lead to charged polypropylene/air interfaces. [1]

Some models of the EMFi that have only one air gap are believed to function as a sensor.
