Lieutenant General Mohammad Vali Gharani (1913 – 23 April 1979) (Persian: محمد ولی قرنی) was the first Chief of General Staff of the Islamic Republic of Iran Army after Islamic Revolution. He assassinated on 23 April 1979 by Forghan group in Tehran. Then he buried in Qom.[1]

Early life[edit]

Gharani was born in Tehran, Iran, on 1913. He joined the military college of Army in 1930. After 1953 Iranian coup d'état he became the head of second pillar of the Army. He started working against the Army of Pahlavi dynasty science he joined the army.

Gharani in Pahlavi dynasty[edit]

Mohammad Vali Gharani in the time of 1953 Iranian coup d'état was the commander of Gilan brigade. He was one of the person who was one of the involvement in coup d'état. And because of this, he achieved Brigadier general and The second pillar military office of Army.[2] On 1958 he planned for a coup d'état by some of his colleagues, but the plan was appeared for the army and then he put in prison for 3 years. Finally he released on 1961 and came out the prison.

Career[edit]

Gharani after coming out of prison, resumed his activities against the regime and during 5 June 1963, after visiting Ayatollah Milani, he was cached by the military again and was sentenced to 3 years in prison. After 1979 Islamic Revolution of Iran, Gharani started his new job in army. Gharani start his job as Chief of General Staff of the Islamic Republic of Iran Army under Ayatollah Khomeini's commonding. On 13 February 1979 he presented in the chief office of the army that "The army of Pahlavi dynasty that was said that is one of the best well equipped army in the world, and maybe it was, but because there wasn't any faith and believe to Allah, the army Splintered during some hours. Assassination[edit]

On 23 April 1979, Gharani was assassinated inside his house in Valiasr street next to the Empire Cinema(now: Cinema Esteghlal) by Hamid Niknam. The terrorist group (Forghan group), claimed responsibility publishing a statement.
