The PNR 1500 class were ten boxcab diesel-electric locomotives built in 1966 by Alsthom. They had a brief service with the Philippine National Railways, serving the South Main Line between Manila to Legazpi from 1967 to 1976.

Background

[edit]

The newly-established Philippine National Railways had its entire rolling stock provided by Japanese and American suppliers. During the 1960s, PNR's diesel locomotives were provided by General Electric through its GE Transportation division. Meanwhile, suppliers for the Japanese National Railways such as Tokyu Car, Fuji, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries provided the agency's coaches and diesel multiple units.

Design

[edit]

The design for the 1500 classes were based on a family of AC electric locomotives nicknamed Danseuses. These include the SNCF Classes BB 16500 and BB 17000. Around 400 of these locomotives were built in the late 1960s for the SNCF. At the same time, the 1500 class was being built for the PNR. It was known for its double-ended cab design as well as its boxed shape. It also was originally built with a UIC coupler as seen on promotional material, but was later changed to an AAR type.
